IND vs ENG: After captaincy and runs, Shubman Gill gets aura, Virat Kohli calls him 'star boy'

No batsman has scored a double hundred and a 150-plus score in the same Test match in the game's 150-year-long history. Shubman Gill did that at Edgbaston. He did one better than the Aussie great Alan Border who had two 150s. No Indian batsman had scored 430 runs in a single Test. Gill went past Sunil Gavaskar's run tally of 344 against West Indies in that storied Port of Spain Test in 1971.
On Saturday, cricketing history and folktales were being re-written by Shubman's bat. So far in the series he had runs and the captaincy band, now he had an aura too.

ENG vs IND: Body blow for Bazball as Shubman Gill's India storm Birmingham bastion

The Shubman Gill era has well and truly dawned. India, minus their pace lynchpin Jasprit Bumrah, scripted their most resounding overseas victory, handing England a crushing defeat by 336 runs -- the heaviest of their much-vaunted Bazball era. Gill's record-shattering 269 and 161, Mohammed Siraj's incisive six-wicket haul in the first innings, and Akash Deep's sensational 10-wicket match haul lit up one of India's finest all-round performances away from Test Highlights | Full Scorecard It was Akash's fiery five-wicket burst that sealed the deal, bundling England out for a meek 271 in pursuit of a Himalayan 608 on Day 5. The win was India's first-ever Test triumph in Birmingham, breaking a winless streak of nine matches at the venue. And it came under the leadership of a captain who did more than just talk—Shubman Gill led from the front with a bat that blazed and a presence that commanded. While Gill cashed in on one of the flattest pitches England has served up, Siraj and Akash Deep rose to the occasion in Bumrah's absence, outbowling England's own attack on home wicket leads to another!Akash Deep is on as he traps #HarryBrook in front & half of the English side is back in the hut!1-1 on the cards? ! #ENGvIND 2nd TEST, Day 5 | LIVE NOW on #JioHotstar Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 6, 2025'England can chase anything in the fourth innings'—that had become the Bazball gospel after the Ben Stokes-led side mowed down 371 at Headingley. Birmingham, too, held haunting memories for India, the site of England's record 378-run chase in 2022 that announced the birth of Bazball. And with Bumrah rested for workload management, the odds seemed stacked once this young Indian side, under Gill, played with the poise of seasoned warriors and the audacity of a London crime syndicate. Banishing the ghosts of Leeds, they produced a clinical, ruthless display across all three departments, levelling the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 1-1 after two gripping now find themselves in a spot of real bother. Their Bazball pride has taken a body blow. It's their heaviest home defeat since the Stokes-McCullum revolution began redefining Test cricket. More worryingly, England's bowling—led by Chris Woakes and flanked by rookies Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse—looked blunt and bereft of ideas. Their struggle raised fresh questions: can Bazball afford to thrive on such placid pitches, or has the very surface of their strategy begun to betray them?SHUBMAN GILL WALKS THE TALKIndia, by contrast, corrected every flaw exposed in Leeds. From dropping nine catches in the opener to pulling off sharp takes in Birmingham's slip cordon; from a brittle lower order to one that stood up with runs. All-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, with twin fifties, and Washington Sundar, with a vital 40 in the first innings, added steel to India's fact, India were tottering at 211 for 5 in the first innings before Gill and Jadeja stitched together a match-defining 203-run stand for the sixth wicket, propelling India to a towering the most symbolic shift came from Gill himself. After the loss in Leeds, he had spoken bluntly about the top order's failure to convert starts—"daddy hundreds" were needed, not blame passed down to the tail. And in Birmingham, he delivered in emphatic style: 450 runs across two innings, the most ever by an Indian in a Test, eclipsing Sunil Gavaskar's 344 against West Indies in 1971.#ShubmanGill delivers a captain's classic, cracking a fluent 150 and steering India with flair against England! #ENGvIND 2nd TEST, Day 4 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 5, 2025Bumrah's omission and the decision to go in with three all-rounders over Kuldeep Yadav sparked chatter on Day 1. But by the time Gill had his "daddy hundred" on the board, the doubters were silenced. India hadn't carried the baggage from Leeds—they had come to Birmingham to make a statement. West Indies vs Australia, 2nd Test, Day 4: Live Score and Updates from Grenada

21:46 IST:The Aussie Pacers were relentless, to say the least, as they kept on hitting the right areas from the word go. Campbell got out in the 2nd over to Hazlewood. Carty was the next to go as he edged one to the keeper of Starc's bowling. Webster's introduction in the 10th over immediately paid dividends as he got the big wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite, who is having a forgettable outing in his 100th Test match. Brandon King, the hero from the 1st innings, started off his 2nd dig on a positive note, scoring 3 boundaries in his 14, but Captain Cummins managed to sneak one through his defenses right on the brink of Lunch, leaving the Windies tottering at 33/4. 21:38 IST:SESSION SUMMARY – 55 Runs, 19.4 Overs, 7 Wickets Lunch on Day 4, and the Aussies are now 6 wickets away from going 2-0 up. To start the session, West Indies pacers were clinical this morning as they wrapped up the Aussie tail within 22 runs, with two Josephs sharing the remaining 3 wickets between them. Shamar eventually finished with a four-fer to his name as his record against Australia continues to elevate. After that, the Windies chase began as they batted 13.4 overs in the session. To no one's surprise, they have found their going tough on this wicket as the Aussie pacers have come out firing on all cylinders. 21:33 IST:12.4: Pat Cummins to Brandon King, OUT! BOWLED'EM! ABSOLUTE CORKER FROM THE AUSSIE SKIPPER! The ball change has worked wonders for Australia, and they are all over the West Indies now. Pat Cummins steams in from 'over the wicket and lands this a touch fuller, on off, gets it to straighten after hitting the deck. This is his stock delivery and he has troubled batters all over the world with this one. Brandon King, who had to wait for this ball for a bit with the ball change, loses a bit of focus. He does not really move his feet and plays down the wrong line as well as he expects it to shape in. The ball sneaks past the outside edge and hits the top of off. A dream dismissal for Cummins, and West Indies are 33/4 now. THAT WILL ALSO BE LUNCH ON DAY 4! 21:32 IST:Oh, yet again the Dukes ball fails to pass the ring test, and we have a new set of balls being brought on. The Umpires will ensure the changed ball it is similar to a 10-15 over used ball. Selection done, and we are set to resume. 21:29 IST:12.3: Pat Cummins to Brandon King, Good length and on middle, Brandon King gets behind the line of it and blocks it out. 21:28 IST:12.2: Pat Cummins to Brandon King, On a length and on middle, angling in, Brandon King clips it through mid-wicket for a couple of runs. 21:28 IST:12.1: Pat Cummins to Brandon King, Full and around off, Brandon King drives it firmly but straight to wide mid off. 21:27 IST:11.6: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Back of a length and outside off, Roston Chase leaves it alone. 21:26 IST:11.5: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Overpitched and just around off, Roston Chase gets forward and drives it through covers for a brace and gets off the mark. 21:25 IST:11.4: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Pitched up and on middle and off, angling in, Roston Chase steers it away towards point. 21:25 IST:11.3: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Fuller again and on off, shaping in, Roston Chase strides out and taps it to short covers. 21:24 IST:11.2: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Fuller and around off, Roston Chase reaches out for it but mistimes his drive towards short covers. 21:24 IST:11.1: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Right in the blockhole, on off, angling in, Roston Chase digs it out well. 21:23 IST:10.6: Pat Cummins to Brandon King, Length again and around off, keeps low again, Brandon King stabs it out towards short covers. A top effort though! Good length and on the fifth stump line, Brandon King tries to play it with soft hands but gets an outside edge between second and third slip. Green is standing a bit ahead at third slip and dives to his left to grab it with his outstretched left hand just above the ground, but it just does not stick in. It would have been a spectacular catch. 21:19 IST:9.6: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, MAIDEN-WICKET OVER! Pitched up and around off, Roston Chase pushes it towards covers. 21:18 IST:9.5: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Hard length and just outside off, Roston Chase offers no shot at it. 21:17 IST:9.4: Beau Webster to Roston Chase, Short of a length and around off, nips back in, Roston Chase leaves it alone. 21:18 IST:West Indies, Captain, Roston Chase comes out to bat at number 5. 21:17 IST:9.3: Beau Webster to Kraigg Brathwaite, OUT! Webster lands this on a good length but much closer to the stumps, but still, the batter does not have to play that one. It is around the fifth stump line and holds its line. KB without moving his feet ,tries to have a poke at it, but only manages to get a nick behind where Alex Carey takes an easy catch. India Beat England In 2nd Test For Historic Win At Edgbaston, Level Series 1-1

Last Updated: India secured their first-ever win at Edgbaston, defeating England by 336 runs in the second Test to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series 1-1. India registered their first-ever win at Edgbaston, beating England in the second Test by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Birmingham on Sunday. England had won the first Test in Headingley last week. How India Scripted History? On a typical English weather day, heavy cloud cover and subsequent rain gave way to bright sunshine, delaying the start by one hour and 40 minutes. The forced stoppage left India 80 overs to bowl out England, who began the day at 72 for three chasing a near-impossible 608. Prasidh Krishna opened the bowling alongside Akash Deep, who was the standout bowler of the session. For the first time in the high-scoring game, the wicket appeared to have deteriorated a bit with Akash Deep getting a prodigious amount of seam movement. It was somewhat surprising that Mohammed Siraj did not start alongside Akash Deep. Having said that, Akash Deep needed seven balls to provide the breakthrough in the opening hour as Ollie Pope played one onto his stumps. In the following over from Akash Deep, the dangerous Harry Brook was trapped in front with a delivery that hit the crack and seamed back in sharply. Brook could not do much about that. It can be assumed that the medium pacer has sealed his place for the Lord's Test with a stellar use of the new ball at Edgbaston. Krishna from the other end could not strike but performed the holding role effectively. Ravindra Jadeja was brought in after the first hour and he got the ball to turn from the rough instantly, posing problems for Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith. Unlike Headingley, Jadeja tried to take some pace off his deliveries and it did turn off the rough. The England captain, however, was able to get some much-needed runs. He got four boundaries off Siraj, including a pull and an extra cover drive. Realising that there was little point in just defending, Stokes decided to sweep Jadeja. Washington Sundar had Ben Stokes on the stroke of lunch. India are looking to record just their fourth Test series win in England following triumphs in 1971, 1986 and 2007. The third Test at Lord's starts on Thursday. (With inputs from Agencies) About the Author Ritayan Basu Location : Birmingham First Published: July 06, 2025, 21:43 IST
