Bend-founded brewery will close Portland pub after less than two years

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon-founded brewery will soon cease operations at its Portland location, just as it ushers in new beginnings in its flagship city.
Crux Fermentation Project has informed customers that its pub on 2715 SE 8th Ave. will shutter this weekend.

'After almost 2 years, we have made the difficult decision to close our Portland pub,' Crux announced on . 'Our last day of service will be this Sunday 3/30 and we hope to see you for one last pint here in Portland.'
Larry Sidor founded the beer brand in 2012, with the founding of its first Bend tasting room. Crux expanded to its Southeast Portland location more than a decade later in mid-June 2023.
Now, with less than two years at its second pub under its belt, the company is focusing on operations in its hometown.

Crux put its Bend brewpub, located on 50 SW Division St., up for sale last April. The property has since been sold, but the brand is still renting the space as its tasting room.
The agreement with the property's new owner has allowed the brewers to ensure the future of their company, according to a social media post.
'The sale of our property last year has opened opportunities, including investment in growing our non-alcoholic NØMØ lineup and launching a 401k program for all Crux employees,' the brand .
Owners also reported that it anticipates new neighbors at the Bend tasting room, now that two retail spaces nearby are available.

Although the Portland location is no more, Crux products can still be found in different retailers and restaurants throughout the city, including New Seasons Market, Fred Meyer and Fire On the Mountain.
Additionally, the company said Portland customers with gift cards can redeem them at the Bend location, online or through one final sale before the pub closes.

I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement director resigns as project faces funding uncertainty

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The director of the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project — which aims to improve safety and congestion in a strip of the interstate — resigned from her position as the project faces funding uncertainty. A spokesperson for the project confirmed Project Director Megan Channell's resignation to KOIN 6 News, noting the former director submitted her resignation letter on June 23. In her resignation letter, obtained by KOIN 6, Channell wrote, 'Over the past nine years, I have worked to advance the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project through its many stages of planning, community engagement, design and environmental and now, shifting into the construction phase. I am incredibly proud of what the project team has accomplished together. With the project now entering this new phase, I believe this is the right time for my departure.' Parents out thousands as Beehive NW closes abruptly Channel continued, 'I remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition in the weeks ahead and will do everything I can to support an effective transition for the project's continued success.' According to the project spokesperson, Channell's final day on the job was Monday. 'We will be relying on key team members to support and carry forward the responsibilities of the project director until we permanently hire for the role,' the spokesperson told KOIN 6. 'We don't have a timeline to fill this role right now.' Federal grants totaling $450 million was originally awarded to the project, however, over $400 million of the funding could be at risk of being rescinded, ODOT said July 9, noting the agency was working to clarify this with the Federal Highway Administration. Subscribe Now With Congress' approval of Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' the federal grant money could be at risk of being eliminated, according to Rose Gerber, a spokesperson for ODOT's Rose Quarter Project. The Rose Quarter Improvement Project aims to make safety and congestion improvements in Oregon's busiest bottleneck. That grant money was earmarked for building a highway cover and central core, adding an auxiliary lane and shoulder from I-405 to the Morrison Bridge exit and extending an auxiliary lane and shoulder under the highway cover, among other project elements. 'This portion of the project design is at the heart of ODOT's commitment to addressing the negative economic and social impact due to the construction of I-5 in the early 1960s,' project spokesperson Rose Gerber said. For-sale Portland Trail Blazers need a new arena, NBA Commissioner Silver says Some Oregon state dollars have been secured for the project to complete needed bridge work and stormwater facilities near I-405, which would set the stage for the larger aspects of the construction project to take place, ODOT said. 'Of the $450 million granted to the project, $37.5 million for design and utility relocation has been obligated for spending for the project,' Gerber said. That $37.5 million portion of the federal grants is effectively 'protected from rescission,' she said. Gerber previously told KOIN 6 that ODOT is 'committed to this project' and will continue working with local and federal partners in the coming weeks to carve a path forward. Oregon Ducks football valued at just under $1 billion, per The Athletic

A good investment, if you have that type of cash, is a professional sports franchise. Most of them have valuations that just keep going through the atmosphere. For example, the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the NBA's storied franchises, were sold recently for a robust $10 billion. On the other end of the spectrum, the Tampa Bay Rays, a team that is always on the verge of moving out and is currently playing in a minor league park, is looking to sell for around $1.7 billion. College football teams are different. They aren't professional franchises, even though many make just as much money as some. The New York Times attempted to determine the value of each of the Power 4 teams if they were franchises that could be sold to the highest bidder. According to the article, the Oregon Ducks would be valued at around $990 million, just missing the $1 billion mark. "In prestige and championship potential, the Ducks — the top team on this list that has never won a national title — are probably undervalued here," writer Matt Baker said. "Nike has made them a national brand, and Dan Lanning has re-established them as a title contender. Though Oregon proved it belongs in the Big Ten by winning the conference championship in Year 1, the Ducks get a half-share payout from the league until the 2030 fiscal year. That reality kept them from being the 14th member of our $1 billion club. At the top of the list of college franchises is the Texas Longhorns, valued at $2.38 billion, followed by the Georgia Bulldogs ($1.92 billion), Ohio State Buckeyes ($1.9 billion), and Notre Dame Fighting Irish ($1.84 billion). The Ducks generate $90 million in revenue annually, but playing in a traditional small market, with the largest market nearby being Portland, which is not a major market itself, doesn't help their valuation. Although Autzen Stadium is great, it's relatively small compared to other college stadiums. Just an expansion of the stadium to perhaps 70,000 would probably push the Ducks over that $1 billion threshold. But it really doesn't matter since the Ducks aren't a pro team. Oregon is a very successful college program that is the envy of most and isn't hurting for cash.
