Egypt works to revive flax industry to boost local manufacturing
Speaking during a tour of the Tanta Flax and Oils Company, Minister of Public Enterprise Mohamed Shimy said there was a clear directive to integrate companies across the textile value chain to achieve sustainable growth based on the optimal use of local resources.
Tanta Flax and Oils is a subsidiary of the state-owned Chemical Industries Holding Company.
During his visit, Shimy reviewed the company's performance, production capacities, and future vision. He stressed the importance of advancing the flax industry as a cornerstone for integration with spinning and weaving companies and for supporting manufacturing industries, which would help increase local production and reduce the import bill.
'Egyptian flax is considered one of the finest types globally in terms of quality and purity, which provides a great opportunity to expand the local production and manufacturing of its derivatives, and to export it as a high-value product to global markets,' Shimy said.
The minister toured the company's various flax, wood, twine, and oil factories, as well as its workshops and warehouses. He also met with workers on the production lines, affirming that they were the 'cornerstone of any real development process.'
Shimy noted that Egypt's flax industry has deep historical roots, dating back to ancient Egyptian civilisation, and that Egypt was one of the first countries to cultivate flax and use it in textiles, medicine, and oils.
He called for increasing the utilisation of production capacities, improving the work environment, and adhering to maintenance programmes to ensure sustainable and efficient performance. He also urged the company to enhance health and safety standards, study partnership opportunities with the private sector, and update its sales and marketing policies to open new local and international markets for its products.

Egypt imports 345,000 tonnes of food, agricultural products in one week
The National Food Safety Authority has announced that Egypt received approximately 2,060 food shipments last week, with a combined weight of around 345,000 tonnes, imported by 910 companies. According to a report issued by the Authority's media centre, the imports included wheat, various oils, local fava beans, and soybeans. Ukraine topped the list of exporting countries to Egypt during the week, followed by Russia, Indonesia, and the United States, out of a total of 84 countries supplying food products to the Egyptian market. Alexandria Port remained the primary gateway for incoming food shipments, handling 660 shipments. It was followed by Cairo International Airport with 510 shipments and Ain Sokhna Port with 265. In terms of customs clearance, 1,064 food shipments were released under provisional (temporary) clearance, while 475 shipments were processed through the fast-track release system. The Grievance Committee also issued incident reports for 90 shipments during this period, and 85 import licences were granted to importers. Meanwhile, the Authority reported that, according to the General Administration for Exports and Imports, Egypt exported around 165,000 tonnes of food products last week through 3,810 shipments handled by 1,250 exporting companies. These exports covered roughly 644 types of food items, including vegetables and tubers, processed vegetables and fruits, flour and grain products, among others. Among vegetable exports, beans of various types ranked first with 8,000 tonnes, followed by potatoes at approximately 7,000 tonnes, and mixed frozen vegetables at 6,000 tonnes. In total, 50 different vegetable products were exported, amounting to around 45,000 tonnes. As for fruits, strawberries led with a total of 10,000 tonnes exported last week, followed by mangoes and red grapes at roughly 5,000 tonnes each. Altogether, 30 types of fruits were exported, totalling around 26,000 tonnes. Egyptian food exports were distributed across 170 international markets during the week, with Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Russia among the top importers. Regarding export terminals, Alexandria Port again topped the list with 710 export shipments, followed by Damietta Port with 449 shipments and Cairo International Airport with 435. To support food exports, the Authority issued 750 health certificates last week under the system introduced earlier this year, aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety standards and boosting international confidence in Egyptian products.

Egypt's PM reviews efforts to support local pharmaceutical industry
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Sunday chaired a meeting to review efforts to support and develop the country's pharmaceutical industry, with the aim of boosting local manufacturing and attracting more foreign investment. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, and the heads of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement (UPA). Madbouly affirmed the government's interest in providing all necessary support for the growth and localisation of this vital industry. He noted that Egypt has a long history in pharmaceuticals, with large industrial facilities, and possesses promising advantages for further progress, including a large domestic market and access to nearby regional markets. During the meeting, EDA Chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy presented a report on the state of the industry. He stated that the sector is nationally stable and has achieved significant jumps in local market sales in 2024 compared to 2023, with positive expectations for continued growth in 2025. El-Ghamrawy confirmed that there is a secure level of coverage for various therapeutic groups, including hormones, cardiovascular drugs, oncology products, and corticosteroids. He also assured that there is a safe strategic stock of pharmaceutical raw materials, sufficient for three to six months. The EDA chairman highlighted the growth of foreign companies in the Egyptian market, noting that their sales in 2024 saw a 43% increase compared to 2023. He attributed this progress to several measures taken by the EDA to attract international firms, including monitoring modern and innovative products, a reference-based registration process that reduces approval times from two years to as little as two months, a unified electronic registration system, and support for localisation projects. El-Ghamrawy also noted that the EDA provides about 979 essential regulatory services to support the pharmaceutical industry and has not increased the fees for these services in the past two years.
