Udaan Acquires ShopKirana in USD 88.5 Mn All-Stock Deal
You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.
B2B e-commerce platform Udaan has made a significant move in the grocery commerce sector by acquiring Shopkirana in an all-stock deal. This marks a major consolidation in the industry, highlighting the ongoing shifts within the grocery e-commerce space.
As per regulatory filings, the deal has been approved by the board of Info Edge, which holds a 26.14% stake in Shopkirana through its wholly-owned subsidiary Startup Investments Holding Ltd (SIHL). The stake has been transferred to Hiveloop Technology Pvt Ltd (HEPL), a subsidiary of Trustroot Internet, Udaan's parent company based in Singapore.
In return for its stake, Info Edge will receive 1.68 crore shares of Hiveloop Technology, which translates to about 0.91% of HEPL on a fully diluted basis. These shares are linked to 73,561 reference shares of Udaan's parent company, valued at approximately USD 23.13 million. The swap suggests that Shopkirana's total enterprise value is around USD 88.5 million, based on the value of Info Edge's minority stake. However, the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions outlined in the agreement.
Entrackr's analysis points out that Shopkirana will secure a 3.48% stake in Udaan's Indian business, based on Info Edge's holding in the Indian entity of Udaan. Founded in 2015, Shopkirana has received significant investments, raising over USD 50 million from investors such as Info Edge, Sixth Sense Ventures, and the Oman India Joint Investment Fund, among others.
Shopkirana has carved out a niche by focusing on the digitisation of procurement for kirana stores in smaller cities like Indore, Bhopal, Surat, and Agra. The integration with Udaan is expected to expand the latter's reach in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and the hotel, restaurant, and catering (HoReCa) business.
In the fiscal year ending March 2024, Shopkirana's revenue fell by 6.26%, from INR 681.81 crore in FY23 to INR 639.16 crore in FY24. However, the company managed to reduce its losses by 30%, bringing them down to INR 55 crore in FY24. The results for FY25 are yet to be reported.
This acquisition signals the increasing investor fatigue and challenges within the grocery commerce space. Many firms have struggled to turn a profit, despite the large scale of the market. For Shopkirana, this move could be seen as an effort to position itself for acquisition by controlling costs, although this has affected topline growth. For Udaan, the stock swap offers a relatively low-risk acquisition as it continues its push to reduce EBITDA losses and hopes for future upside.

Chery to support India's JSW to launch new EV brand by 2027
China's Chery Automobile has agreed to supply technology and components to JSW Group to facilitate the launch of a new-energy vehicle brand in India by 2027, reported Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. Under the terms of the agreement, Chery is said to receive a one-time technology transfer payment fee and ongoing royalties from JSW, owned by Sajjan Jindal. The partnership does not include any equity arrangement, adhering to India's investment restrictions on Chinese firms in strategic sectors. This deal represents the first significant passenger vehicle technology transfer from China to India since the 2020 border conflicts, which led to heightened bilateral tensions and investment barriers. Chery and JSW have contested the details reported by Bloomberg News, stating that the agreement primarily concerns component supply. Chery's expertise in electric cars, hybrids, and automotive technologies like electric powertrains, hybrid systems, and intelligent cockpit technology is crucial for JSW's goal to localise and scale production swiftly. JSW is currently assessing several Chery models, especially the iCar sport utility range, to adapt for the Indian market. The new EV brand is said to be entirely owned by JSW and will operate separately from its current MG Motor India joint venture (JV) with China's SAIC Motor, which will continue to sell vehicles under the MG brand in India. The royalty payments from JSW will contribute to Chery's revenue and support its global expansion plans, which include a $1bn factory in Turkey. The JSW is also reportedly constructing facilities in Maharashtra state in India to produce its own brand of passenger EVs from 2027 and plans to introduce electric trucks and buses as early as next year. Furthermore, JSW aims to increase its stake in the MG Motor JV by purchasing additional SAIC's stake in the entity, as disclosed by JSW MG Motor India director Parth Jindal in a local Indian newspaper earlier this month. In May, Bloomberg News reported that Chery is also considering a Hong Kong initial public offering to raise around $1.5bn, citing those familiar with the matter. Earlier this month, Chery confirmed its entry into the UK new car market this summer under its own brand. "Chery to support India's JSW to launch new EV brand by 2027 – report" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand. Mumbai Gains Majority of Maharashtra's $1.4B Funding
Mumbai retained its leadership as the top funding hub, with a notable share of 64 per cent, while the ecosystem also witnessed two IPOs and the creation of one unicorn during the period. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Tech companies across the state of Maharashtra raised a total of USD 1.4 billion during the first half of 2025, according to Tracxn's Maharashtra Tech H1 2025 Funding Report marking an 8 per cent increase from the USD 1.26 billion raised in H2 2024 and a 1 per cent rise from the USD 1.34 billion raised in H1 2024, signaling a stable and slightly improving funding environment for the region. The growth has been propelled by robust early-stage activity and the continuation of large-ticket funding rounds, despite muted unicorn creation.
