Netflix drama Adolescence shines light on 'growing problem'
Sir Keir's comments came after writer of Adolescence, Jack Thorne, said he and co-writer Graham wanted the programme to be a piece of work that "causes discussion and makes change".Thorne said: "I want it to be shown in schools, I want it to be shown in Parliament. It's crucial because this is only going to get worse."It's something that people need to be talking about, hopefully that's what drama can do," he added.
'Toxic misogyny'
Midgley told the Commons "everyone" was talking about the series, whose stars Graham and Christine Tremarco, were both born in her constituency. The Labour MP said it "highlights online male radicalisation and violence against girls" and that "the creators of the show are calling for screenings in Parliament and in schools to spark change".She asked the Prime Minister to back the campaign "to counter toxic misogyny early" and "give young men the role models they deserve".Starmer responded his household had also been glued to the show.He said: "At home we are watching Adolescence with our children. "I've got a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl and it's a really good drama to watch." He said the violence carried out by young men influenced by what they see online was "abhorrent" and "we have to tackle it." He added the government was taking steps such as putting in specialist rape and sexual offences teams in police forces across the country dealing with 999 calls. However, he said the issues raised in Adolescence were "a matter of culture" which he said "it's important across the whole house that we tackle this emerging and growing problem".It comes as the former England manager Gareth Southgate spoke out about masculinity and the "manosphere".In a wide-ranging talk for the BBC's annual Richard Dimbleby Lecture, Southgate said he feared young men were spending too much time gaming, gambling and watching pornography - and that they needed better role models beyond online influencers.

Oasis fan dies at Wembley stadium show after plunging from top tier
Other shows at the 90,000 capacity stadium are going ahead as planned. An Oasis fan tragically plunged to his death at the band's sold-out concert in Wembley Stadium last night as witnesses described the "horrific" scene, The Mirror reports. The man, in his 40s, is believed to have been sat in the upper tier of the 90,000 capacity stadium when he fell. Emergency services rushed to the man but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The Met Police confirmed officers rushed to reports of an injured person at 10.19pm, towards the end of the band's reunion gig. Police added that officers at Wembley found the man with "injuries consistent with a fall". And the force has urged any witnesses and concertgoers with information about the tragedy to reach out to The Met. A horrified concertgoer took to Facebook to share their account of the tragic moment. They wrote: "Did anyone else see the guy drop from the upper tier last night." Another Oasis fan responded, saying they had a "panic attack" after they witnessed the tragic moment. They said: "I was block 502 row 32. I have never felt so sick in my life. I got to my seat and had a full blown panic attack which has never happened before. "I was shaking and crying. I was so scared to get down and have to go back up as it was such a high demand show. But with the state I was in, Wembley moved me to block 501 row 8. Still high up but no where near as steep. I was so grateful." Another concertgoer, in a lower tier, described seeing emergency crews rush to the spot where the fan hit concrete after the plunge. She wrote: "I was directly underneath in section 211. "At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see." A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said: "Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London Ambulance Service and the police attended to a concert goer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall. Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. "Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers. The Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them. "Tonight's Oasis concert will go ahead as planned." The Mirror reports it has contacted both the Metropolitan police and reps for Oasis for comment.
