IND vs ENG second Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal goes past Tendulkar, Gavaskar and Gambhir to become joint-fastest to 2000 Test runs
During his limited time on the crease, the young southpaw adopted a belligerent mindset and swiftly stacked up runs on the board to extend India's lead. The young southpaw breezed past the 2000-run mark in Test format with a thick edge, which sent the ball wide of the gully, racing away for a four.

Jaiswal achieved the milestone in his 40th innings to go level with Dravid and Sehwag.
He surpassed Indian icons, including Vijay Hazare, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and many more.
At 23 years and 188 days, Jaiswal became the second youngest Indian batter to reach the milestone after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who accomplished it at the age of 20 years 330 days. Jaiswal found holes at his will and played with England's setup before being pinned in front of the stumps by Josh Tongue. The youngster went for a drive but missed the line entirely and got trapped in front of the stumps. England appealed, and Jaiswal was deemed out. After due consideration, Jaiswal decided to challenge the decision that the umpire Sharfuddoula accepted.
England Test captain Ben Stokes sprinted towards the umpire, indicating that the timer had run out. A lengthy discussion then unfolded between Stokes and the umpire, but eventually, the review was accepted. The review showed three red lights, and England players erupted in jubilation as Jaiswal's quick-fire cameo ended on 28(22), laced with six boundaries. In the first innings,

Frank Worrell (West Indies) – 22 Tests
Harry Brook (England) – 22 Tests
Jaiswal fell agonisingly 13 runs short of a well-deserved century after Stokes outfoxed him and punched his return ticket on 87(107). In England, the right-armers have become Jaiswal's Achilles heel, considering the dominance he exuded over them in the past. In each of the four innings, Jaiswal has lost his wicket to right-armers while averaging at 30.25.
Despite Jaislwa's early fall, KL Rahul kept the tempo high with his trademark drives as Karun Nair held on to the other end. India ended the day with 64/1 in 13 overs, enjoying a healthy 244-run lead.

India's women boxers spearheaded a memorable campaign as Sakshi (54kg), Jaismine (57kg), and Nupur (+80kg) clinched gold medals with contrasting victories at the second World Boxing Cup here on Sunday (July 6, 2025). Their stellar performances helped India finish with an impressive tally of 11 medals — the country's best-ever haul at the event — comprising three gold, five silver, and three bronze. Jugnoo (men's 85kg), Pooja Rani (women's 80kg), Hitesh Gulia (men's 70kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (men's 65kg) signed off with with silver medals after losing their respective finals. Sakshi was at her attacking best against USA's Yosline Perez to get a unanimous verdict from the judges in the women's 54kg final while Jaismine kept her cool under pressure to get the better of Jucielen Cequeira Romeu of Brazil 4:1 in the women's 57kg weight category. Nupur then overcame the challenge of Kazakhstan boxer Yeldana Talipova to earn a 5:0 verdict in the 80+kg final. In the first session of the final day, it was Sakshi who managed to stand atop of the podium with a stellar display that combined speed and combination punches and open India's gold medal account. In the evening session, Jaismine had to use her long reach to keep her Brazilian opponent at bay in the third and final round after there was not much to separate the two after the first two rounds. The tall 23-year-old stayed away from her opponent in the final round and landed punches on the counter attack to get the judges' nod. Nupur also struggled at the start against Talipova as the home boxer took the opening round. But the Indian boxer completely dominated the next two rounds, landing punches at will and out-thinking her opponent to have the last laugh. Earlier, Meenakshi pushed hard for victory against local favourite Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg final but ended on the wrong side of a 3-2 verdict. Jugnoo lost 0:5 against Bekzad Nurdauletov of Kazakhstan while Pooja went down by an identical score line against Australia's Eseta Flint. Hitesh lost 0-5 against Brazil's Kaian Oliveira while Jamwal went down 2-3 against Yuri Falcao. At 25 years and 301 days, Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing record set in 1976 in Auckland. The win - India's first-ever at Edgbaston and biggest overseas victory in terms of runs - saw them level the five-match series 1-1. It surpassed the previous away record set in 2019, when India defeated West Indies by 318 runs at North Sound. Poll Do you think Shubman Gill's captaincy marks a new era in Indian Test cricket? Yes, absolutely No, it's too early to tell Gill's performance with the bat was nothing short of historic. He became the first batter in Test history to score 250 and 150 in the same match, compiling majestic innings of 269 and 161. This came on the back of his 147 in the first Test at Headingley, where India lost despite his century. With 585 runs at an average of 146.25 in just two Tests, Gill is now chasing Don Bradman's legendary record of 974 runs in a series - a mark that has stood for 90 years. Yashasvi Jaiswal on Team Culture & Supportive Dressing Room | IND vs ENG 2nd Test Speaking after the win, a composed yet proud Gill said, 'Especially when you are the captain, I think you need to lead by example... so whenever there is another player in that situation, you can tell that player, this is what the team requires right now.' He added, 'If a good ball gets me out, it gets me out. But as long as I am there, I want to play as long as possible.' Pace duo Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep played key roles in England's collapse, while Gill's leadership - under the added weight of succeeding Rohit Sharma and filling Virat Kohli's No. 4 slot - signaled a new era in Indian Test cricket. The third Test begins July 10 at Lord's, where Gill's India will now look to turn the tide further in their favour. Sachin Tendulkar can't keep calm after Shubman Gill wins first Test as captain, Sourav Ganguly reminds 'without Bumrah'
India's long wait for a Test victory at Edgbaston came to an emphatic end on Sunday, as Akash Deep's 10-wicket match haul and Shubman Gill's batting masterclass powered the visitors to a 336-run win over England in the second Test. The result not only levelled the five-match series 1-1 but also marked India's biggest-ever overseas Test victory by a margin of runs. India players celebrate after teammate Mohammed Siraj takes the catch of Josh Tongue (9th wicket) of England during Day 5 of the 2nd test match, at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday(@BCCI X) Set a world-record 608 to win, England folded for 271 shortly before Tea on Day 5, with pacer Akash Deep delivering a dream performance, 6/99 in the second innings to go with his four-wicket burst in the first. The 28-year-old, who was only drafted into the XI after Jasprit Bumrah was rested, ripped through England's top order and came back to dismiss the in-form Jamie Smith on 88 to effectively seal India's win. The catch was taken by none other than Gill, symbolically finishing the game that was stamped by his leadership and batting. Former India batter and cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar was impressed by the side's dominant performance, writing, "A Shublime innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings. "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be 1 winner. "What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled. Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root. P.S.: Enjoyed the catch taken by Mohammad 'Jonty' Siraj." India had never previously won a Test at Edgbaston in eight previous attempts, losing seven. It was also the venue where England chased down their record fourth-innings target of 378 in 2022 against India. This time, however, there was no comeback for Ben Stokes' men. 'What a performance from Shubman Gill and his team… with the bat and now with the ball.. Akash Deep and Siraj just brilliant. Indian attack looking far superior than the English attack… Akash Deep and Siraj are workhorses. India win without Bumrah… Can't be better result with the fantastic Gill in charge. What a fantastic batting effort..,' former India captain Sourav Ganguly wrote on his X profile. An all-round performance The five-day Test was headlined by Gill's majestic 269 in the first innings and a whirlwind 161 off 162 in the second. His aggregate of 430 runs in the match is among the highest ever by a visiting captain in England. The 24-year-old also marshalled his troops brilliantly, using his bowlers wisely, especially on Day 5 when he rotated Akash Deep, Siraj, and spinners tactically after the rain delay. 'Well done, Team India on an exceptional victory! It was amazing to see the team's fighting spirit and resilience. Congratulations Shubman on an outstanding match with the bat and for leading the team with such poise. A great start to your captaincy. Also great effort from Siraj and Akash Deep. Wishing you all the best for your future matches. #ENGvIND,' former India batter VVS Laxman wrote. India now heads to the Lord's with renewed belief and momentum. While Bumrah is set to return for the third Test, Gill and Deep's performances have ensured that India's bench strength and future are in safe hands.
