Chaminade's Krasner and American Heritage's Rich are Broward 4A-1A Players of the Year

Miami Herald11-06-2025
American Heritage's Jordan Rich made a choice to commit full-time to baseball.
He was one of the most dynamic players in Broward County long before he even made that decision.
Spencer Krasner, a former teammate of Rich's at Heritage, was one of the most outstanding pitchers in the state long before making the decision to transfer to Chaminade-Madonna.
Both ended up having career seasons this year for their respective teams.
And so, Krasner is the Miami Herald's Broward County Pitcher of the Year for Classes 4A-1A while Rich is the Herald's Player of the Year for that same group.
Krasner, a dominant left-hander and University of South Carolina commit, went a perfect 9-0 on the mound this past season, striking out 100 batters in 59 innings and compiling an 0.95 ERA. Krasner, who had already been a vital part of a state championship team at American Heritage as a freshman and state runner-up team as a sophomore, led Chaminade to a 24-5 record and a district championship.
Although the Lions were eliminated in a best-of-3 Region 4-2A quarterfinal series by Miami Westminster Christian, Krasner threw a three-hitter, striking out nine for Chaminade's lone win in the series.
Krasner had five games where he struck out 12 or more batters and eight games where he struck out eight or more.
Krasner figures to be a potential MLB draft prospect in addition to his potential opportunity to become an impactful pitcher in the Southeastern Conference in college.
Rich, formerly a standout on the Patriots' football team, is developing into one of the most versatile players in the state and showed it this season while guiding Heritage to its second state title in three seasons.
'I really feel really great about the decision to play baseball, and wish I had made the decision even sooner,' Rich said. 'I couldn't be happier.'
Rich, a senior outfielder, hit .393 and showed his power with seven home runs and eight doubles; his consistency as he drove in 26 runs; and his speed as he stole 38 bases.
A Miami-Dade College signee for baseball, Rich also showed his resilience returning from a season-ending injury last year to become a full-time starter on a state championship team.
'Two years ago, that 2023 state championship team, I feel, was similar to this team,' Rich said. 'It was a group of selfless guys who gelled at the right time and everything clicked. We just wanted to prove to ourselves we could do it. That's how we approached this season and ultimately finished it.'

DaRon Holmes II appears in 'Rookie Diaries' video released by Nuggets

Denver Nuggets forward DaRon Holmes II appeared in a new behind-the-scenes documentary video released by the team, detailing his experience at the NBA Summer League. Holmes returned to play with the Nuggets earlier this month after missing last season because of a torn Achilles tendon sustained during his debut last year. He started ramping up activity during the playoffs and was on the court for much of the summer before suiting up in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 22nd pick in the 2024 NBA draft was commended for the way he approached his rehab, while maintaining a high spirit. The medical staff helped ensure a smooth recovery process, which was on display in the first episode of "Rookie Diaries" released this week. Holmes was a consensus second-team All-American at Dayton during the 2023-24 season, averaging 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 blocks on 38.6% shooting from 3-point range as a junior. He was also the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. The 22-year-old made four appearances with the Nuggets in summer league, averaging 13 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and one steal on 42.1% shooting from 3-point range. He registered two double-doubles, including a 19-point, 17-rebound and five-assist performance on July 17. Holmes was understandably nervous to return to the site where he was injured, but the 6-foot-9 standout settled in and dazzled with the team. He was highly valued by the team entering the draft last year, and the organization will certainly be excited to watch him next season.

Clemson football is overwhelming pick to repeat as ACC champion in preseason media poll

CLEMSON — Clemson football was picked to win the ACC in the preseason media poll, according to a release from the conference July 30. The Tigers received 3,083 points and secured 167 first-place votes. It was Clemson's eighth time in the last 10 years being picked to win the conference in the ACC preseason poll; the Tigers were not picked to win the league in 2017 and 2024. Miami (7), FSU (4), SMU (2), Georgia Tech (2) and Virginia Tech (1) also received first-place votes. Clemson was not favored to win the ACC last season but won the ACC championship for the eighth time in the last 10 years. The Tigers are a popular pick to repeat as ACC champions because they are returning various experienced and talented players, including quarterback Cade Klubnik, wide receiver Antonio Williams, defensive end T.J. Parker and defensive tackle Peter Woods. The last time Clemson was picked to win the conference was in 2023 when the Tigers finished 9-4 (their fewest wins since 2010). Clemson's 2025 schedule features home games against LSU, SMU and Florida State and road matchups against Louisville, North Carolina and South Carolina. The media poll was conducted by a vote from a media panel, including all credentialed media members at ACC kickoff. This is the second season of the ACC doing away with divisions with the inclusion of Stanford, SMU and Cal being in the conference. The preseason All-ACC team and Player of the Year will be released July 31. Clemson begins preseason practices July 31, too, before opening the 2025 season against LSU on Aug. 30 (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) at Memorial Stadium. Rich Rodriguez in no rush to find a starting quarterback for WVU

MORGANTOWN — The biggest question starting West Virginia's fall camp was who was going to be the starting quarterback to lead Rich Rodriguez's offense. Rodriguez had his fair share of notable quarterbacks play for him like Pat White, who now is on staff, but his 2025 quarterback is still a mystery. Rodriguez didn't name a starter through the spring and didn't suggest anything during his press conference at Big 12 Media Days. He didn't even narrow it down from the seven options. WVU returner Nicco Marchiol, Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson, Charlotte transfer Max Brown, and a couple of underclassmen make up the contenders. Wednesday marked the first time Rodriguez has spoken since the start of the month at Big 12 Media Days. He was asked about when the starter would be named and said for sure when everyone would know. 'What time is kickoff?' Rodriguez asked about the season opener against Robert Morris. '2 o'clock. If we have the first possession, we'll know at about two.' Rodriguez said he has a process for narrowing down the starter. His son and quarterbacks coach, Rhett Rodriguez, will work with Rich to evaluate each player. Right now, five players are getting reps. 'All of them got to get an opportunity to show that they can be the guy,' Rodriguez said. 'I'm hoping, I've said this before, I'm hoping there's more than one. If I have three quarterbacks that are good enough to win with, I'll play all three.' Rodriguez said getting all five quarterbacks reps isn't an issue because of the fast-paced practices. This isn't the first time Rodriguez has talked about rotating quarterbacks. He mentioned it at Big 12 Media Days. Rotating quarterbacks does come with its challenges. Each quarterback is different and has different strengths. Maybe Henderson is a better runner, so the offense will have more designed quarterback runs. Marchiol could be a better thrower, so there are more pass plays. The others might have other strengths. Over the next couple of weeks, Rhett and Rich will figure out each quarterback's strength. 'Quarterbacks have some plays they do better or are better at than others,' Rodriguez said. 'I already talked to our staff. We already talked about it, throughout the next three weeks, if the quarterbacks all keep elevating, if we have like three we think we're ready to play, we're going to find out what those three do the best.' A multiple quarterback system could be tricky, not only for dividing up reps, but for creating variety between each one. Usually, when a two-quarterback system is used, one is more of a passer and the other is more of a rusher. The second quarterback used is also seen as the weaker one, with only a few select plays he comes in for. There's also the issue of whether or not to rotate a quarterback who's in a groove. Rodriguez said he'll keep a player in 'who's hot.' 'Sometimes coaches go, 'Well, are you worried about your opponents?'' Rodriguez said. 'Every time that quarterback is in, they're going to run just that. They'll have enough variety that you can't just cue in on just two or three plays that this quarterback does well.' In the early stages of fall camp, it'll be mostly time to evaluate each quarterback, seeing which player has better fundamentals. Then, it'll get ramped up to see which quarterback runs Rodriguez's scheme the best, and more importantly, can help WVU win games. After the first day of camp, it's far too early to tell. 'It doesn't bother me to rotate quarterbacks if they're good enough to win with, and so that's why I told all of our guys, not just the quarterbacks, prove they're good enough to win with, and you'll play,' Rodriguez said. 'It's as simple as that… They all play really, really well, I think that's a good problem to have.'
