Strategic pacts to strengthen port infrastructure and expand services
During the event, Asyad presented a paper titled 'Asyad's Role in Empowering Oman's Logistics Sector: Growth, Resilience, and Opportunities, ' highlighting the pillars of its comprehensive strategy to develop a globally connected logistics network, expand its footprint across international markets, empower local private-sector players, and unlock opportunities for Omani talent. The presentation also shed light on the Group's 2024 milestones: a pivotal year marked by its first international acquisition. This move expanded Asyad's operational presence to over 90 locations worldwide and underscored its sustained financial and operational growth driven by innovation and excellence.
Further supporting port development and value-added services, Asyad Ports and Freezones signed an agreement with O Bunkering Company to deliver bunker fuel services at Sultan Qaboos Port, enhancing Oman's maritime readiness and attracting new commercial activities.
Reinforcing its commitment to growth and innovation, SOHAR Port and Freezone signed three major agreements to support the development of its LNG terminal. The port partnered with WSP Middle East – Oman for engineering consultancy and project management services, Boskalis for dredging 3.8 million cubic meters of marine material, and Six Construct for constructing the LNG jetty and coastal protection infrastructure.
SOHAR Port and Freezone also earned national recognition at the Ministry's Logistics Best Practices Awards. The 'Marasi' Port Management System won first place in the Continuous Improvement and Innovation category after achieving 90% digitalization in maritime operations and reducing paperwork by 85% through smart operating tools. The port also secured second place in the Net Zero category for pioneering the use of biodiesel produced from recycled cooking oil, in marine tugboats, a first for any port in the Middle East.
Demonstrating its commitment to enhancing urban mobility integration, Mwasalat signed two strategic agreements. These included a first-and-last-mile service development initiative connecting micro-mobility to public transport in select higher education institutions Muscat and Salalah in partnership with the University of Technology and Applied Sciences; and an agreement to develop an integrated public transport station in North Al Batinah in coordination with the Office of the Governor of North Al Batinah. These efforts aim to boost urban mobility efficiency and contribute to broader sustainability objectives.

Muscat: Muscat Municipality is encouraging travellers in Oman to consider carpooling as a sustainable and economically efficient solution in the field of mobility. The civic body claims that carpooling will contribute to reducing the environmental impact and decongesting traffic, while also promoting solidarity and interaction between people who opt for this type of transport. While carpooling in itself is not a trend in Muscat among road users, the concept of shared taxis was quite popular in the country till a few years ago, particularly among the lowly-paid expatriates who could not afford to engage a taxi for daily commuting to offices and home. The shared taxi concept has seen a decline in recent times, with the growing popularity of app-based ride services and the development of the bus network in the capital and across the country. It may be noted that the first phase of public transport in Oman was between 2015-2018, which saw the introduction of bus services on main and secondary routes, streamlining of taxis, and improvement of the walkways. The second phase, which started in 2019 and will end this year, includes the expansion of bus services with new routes, dedicated bus lines, and the provision of new bus stations. The third phase (2026-2040) will witness the progress on the development of the Muscat metro and the introduction of water taxis. According to Market Research Future, the growing popularity of ridesharing platforms and specific carpooling applications can be attributed to their cost-effectiveness, affordability, and ecological advantages. Furthermore, government programs and rewards are contributing to the market expansion for carpooling. Youth Centre partners with OOMCO and Nikon to empower Omani freelancers and photographers
Muscat – In a major step to empower Omani youth and enhance their skills across freelance and professional photography, the Youth Centre has signed two cooperation agreements with Oman Oil Marketing Company (OOMCO) and Nikon. The agreements were signed by His Excellency Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, on behalf of the Youth Centre. Representing OOMCO was CEO Tariq bin Mohammed Al Junaidi, while Anil Khimji, Member of the Board of Directors at Khimji Ramdas Group, signed on behalf of Nikon. The agreement with OOMCO will see the launch of the third edition of the Tamakun Self-Employment Program, which aims to empower 200 young men and women who are self-employed. Running from September to December 2025, the programme focuses on equipping youth with the skills and tools needed to transform their talents into sustainable sources of income. The second agreement, signed with Nikon, is designed to support youth in the field of professional photography. It includes the implementation of advanced training programmes and the setup of fully equipped photography and audio studios at the Youth Centre. This initiative aims to create a space for young people to develop their creative capabilities and produce high-quality artistic and visual content. Commenting on the initiative, Ishaq bin Saud Al Manji, Public Relations and Partnerships Officer at the Youth Centre, said the agreements represent the Centre's continued commitment to building strategic partnerships with both governmental and private institutions. 'These partnerships are part of our mission to provide a stimulating environment for Omani youth through quality programmes that develop skills and open pathways for future success,' he said. He noted that the Tamakun programme has already proven its effectiveness in supporting young entrepreneurs and that this third edition aims to be even more impactful. 'We are also confident that the professional training and upgraded facilities made possible through our partnership with Nikon will significantly enhance the artistic and technical skills of Omani youth,' he added. Students make toiletries, plastic alternatives out of 'menace' mesquite
IBRI: The student-led company "Greenova" from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Ibri has achieved a breakthrough by extracting alternatives to plastic and advanced health products from the mesquite tree (Prosopis juliflora). This pioneering step merges green economy principles with biotechnology, embodying Omani innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship. The company has emerged as a leader in transforming what was long considered a "harmful plant" into a hub of environmental and industrial innovation. Badr bin Said al Azizi, CEO of Greenova, stated: "With over two years of experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, the company has established a national and global reputation by developing a mesquite-based alternative to plastic. This material is stronger, cheaper, shatterproof and more heat-resistant." He noted that the material's high efficiency has been validated by a credible report from the Plant Therapy Research Laboratory in China, supervised by leading scientists, reinforcing the innovation's credibility and the product's robustness. He said: "By extracting compounds from mesquite leaves, the company has produced 100 per cent natural hair wash, body wash and soap derived from a local tree. This Omani-made product meets global standards, competes in international markets and offers a safe, healthy alternative to existing options." The CEO emphasised that Greenova has achieved remarkable milestones in a short time. Sales of its plastic alternative raw material have captured 40 per cent of the Omani market in a single transaction, with a net daily profit of 35 per cent, reflecting the project's economic viability and environmental sustainability. This success followed extensive efforts, including a strategic agreement with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate to utilise mesquite tree waste — which previously required millions of riyals in annual public tenders for disposal. Thus, an environmental burden has been turned into an economic opportunity, positioning Greenova as a model for circular economy practices. Elyas bin Abdullah al Hatmi from Greenova highlighted the company's participation in numerous entrepreneurial events, such as Start-up Weekend and national and international hackathons, where it secured first place in 2025. The company also competed in Qatar's 2024 championship and reached the finals of Oman's Injaz exhibition in 2025. Notably, Greenova won incubation support from Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Al Dhahirah under the "Dhakira Innovates" initiative, cementing its strong presence in sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship. — ONA
