Ban on single-use plastics takes effect in Nigeria's Lagos

The Star10 hours ago
ABUJA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The authorities in Nigeria's southwestern state of Lagos, the country's economic hub, on Tuesday began enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics below 40 microns to address environmental concerns and promote sustainability.
Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for environment and water resources in Lagos, told reporters at a press conference that any store found storing or selling single-use plastics would be sealed, while warning everyone to desist from such acts.
"There will be no going back from July 1 on the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics, which are less than 40 microns in Lagos State," Wahab said.
Offenders will be punished according to the environmental laws of the state, he said, noting that extensive public awareness campaigns had been conducted since the ban was announced in January 2024. The ban also includes styrofoam food containers.
The ban is mainly part of a comprehensive effort to mitigate the adverse effects of plastic pollution on the environment and public health, Wahab said. The government does not, however, ban the production of all categories of plastics and has encouraged producers and distributors of the banned items in the state to take the option of selling them outside Lagos.
Local environmental protection experts and activists hailed the development, describing it as "a positive step towards addressing the global plastic crisis."
In an earlier phone interview with Xinhua, Niran Alebiosu, a Lagos-based environmentalist, said the ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable practices to combat environmental degradation.
"As Nigeria's economic powerhouse takes this significant step, it sets an example for the entire nation and underscores the importance of collective efforts in preserving the planet for future generations," Alebiosu said, noting that the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on marine life, soil, and air quality has raised global concerns, prompting governments and communities to take proactive measures.
"The ban aligns with international best practices and demonstrates Lagos State's commitment to achieving a cleaner and greener environment. Businesses and individuals are urged to adopt sustainable alternatives, such as biodegradable materials, to comply with the new regulations," the expert added.

CCIB acquires Alpadis

PETALING JAYA: Indah Secretarial (Penang) Sdn Bhd (ISPG) – an indirect, full subsidiary of CC International Bhd (CCIB) – has entered into a share purchase agreement with Switzerland-based Alpadis Group Holding AG to acquire all issued shares of Alpadis Trust (Labuan) Ltd (Alpadis) for US$750,000 in cash. The acquisition, free of encumbrances, aims to enhance CCIB's portfolio in the trust and fiduciary services sector. Incorporated in Malaysia on March 28, 2011, Alpadis is a licensed trust company based in Labuan. With a share capital of US$100,000 (100,000 ordinary shares), Alpadis provides comprehensive trust and fiduciary services, including asset protection, estate planning, tax planning, and wealth management for global clients. The company was profitable for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2023 (FY23) and FY24, though FY24 saw lower profits due to reduced revenue from management fees. Post-acquisition, Alpadis will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of ISPG, and thus indirectly owned by CCIB. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, CCIB said the acquisition will be funded through unutilised proceeds from CCIB's private placement completed on July 26, 2023. The acquisition, expected to be finalised in the final quarter of this year, will not significantly impact CCIB's net assets, gearing, share capital, or major shareholdings for FY25. However, it aligns with CCIB's strategy to expand its professional business services, leveraging Alpadis' established client base to enhance market presence. The transaction represents a 3.5% ratio under Bursa Malaysia's Labuan Market Listing Requirements and does not require shareholder or additional regulatory approvals beyond Labuan Financial Services Authority's consent. No liabilities will be assumed by CCIB.

Tariff: Positive response from US to Malaysia's approach

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States (US) has responded positively to Malaysia's approach and engagements on tariff issues and proposals, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He said Malaysia's proactive engagement and approach with the US is to understand the issues involved and to work together to navigate a path to find a win-win situation. The US responded positively to Malaysia's approach. Trade teams from both sides discussed how to navigate forward, he said. "The two teams held (productive) discussions and negotiations; progress is being made along those lines," he said during a fireside chat at the Invest ASEAN-Malaysia Conference 2025 moderated by Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed today. According to Amir Hamzah, Malaysia has always been non-retaliatory. It wants to work with the US to seek ways to improve trade for both sides. He noted that the trade deficit between Malaysia and the US comprised key components such as the electronics and semiconductor industries. He said many US-based multinationals are exporting to the US, and Malaysia was pleased when the US suspended tariffs for the semiconductor sector. It recognised that this was a critical asset that they wanted to protect. "But for Malaysia, it was important because it shows there is a lot of cross dependency between Malaysia and the US," he said. The minister also noted that Malaysia highlighted to the US in the negotiations that global supply chains are integrally linked and are difficult to decouple without significant consequences. - Bernama
