WhatsApp says it removed 6.8m accounts linked to scams
WhatsApp said that it "proactively detected and took down accounts before scam centres were able to operationalise them."In one case, it worked with its owner Meta and ChatGPT-developer OpenAI to disrupt scams linked to a Cambodian criminal group that offered cash for likes on social media posts to promote a fake rent-a-scooter pyramid scheme.WhatsApp said scammers had used ChatGPT to create the instructions issued to potential victims.Typically, fraudsters would first contact potential targets with a text message before moving the conversation to social media or private messaging apps, said WhatsApp.These scams were usually completed on payment or cryptocurrency platforms, it added."There is always a catch and it should be a red flag for everyone: you have to pay upfront to get promised returns or earnings."Scam centres that cheat people out of billions of dollars are known to operate from South East Asian countries like Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand. These centres are also known to recruit people who are then forced to carry out the scams.Authorities in the region have urged people to be wary of potential fraud and use anti-scam measures such as WhatsApp's two-step verification feature to help protect their accounts from being hijacked. In Singapore, for example, users have also been told by police to be wary of any unusual requests they receive on messaging apps.

South Korea says timing of U.S. tariff cut on autos not decided
SEOUL, Aug 6 (Reuters) - South Korea's Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said on Wednesday that Seoul needs to hold further discussions with Washington on the timing of the promised tariff cuts on the country's car exports to the U.S. from the current level of 25%. President Donald Trump said last week the U.S. will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, including autos, as part of a deal that eases tensions with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally. The 15% U.S. tariffs on most items coming from South Korea are due to take effect starting from Thursday. South Korean auto makers such as Hyundai Motor ( opens new tab and Kia ( opens new tab want the tariff cut brought in swiftly to create a level playing field with Japanese and European rivals. Separately, Japan's top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said he would head to Washington this week to press Trump to sign an executive order to bring the cut to tariffs on Japanese auto imports into effect. In the technology sector, Kim said the countries had agreed to continue talks on online platform legislation to make sure U.S. tech companies were not unfairly treated compared with domestic firms. "Although the digital issue was not included in the latest agreement, there are major concerns about it among the U.S. government, parliament and businesses," he said at a parliamentary session. The minister reiterated that there had been no agreement on the opening of the agriculture market, including beef, rice, fruit and other farm goods as part of the deal. But he said the countries will increase cooperation in the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables, which has been cited by Washington as one of the non-tariff barriers that U.S. farmers face. South Korean Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol said at a separate parliamentary session that the U.S. viewed the quarantine process for fruit and vegetables as too slow and asked Seoul to introduce a rational and scientific process.

India's two state-run firms to issue over $500 million of debt in August, sources say
MUMBAI, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Indian state-run companies NHPC ( opens new tab and NTPC Green Energy ( opens new tab will raise around 45 billion rupees (about $512.6 million) through the sale of short-term bonds this month, three sources aware of the matter said on Tuesday. Hydropower company NHPC is set to raise around 20 billion rupees through the sale of two-year or three-year bonds and should be the first of the two companies to come up with the issue, the sources said. NTPC Green Energy, a subsidiary of integrated power company NTPC ( opens new tab, will make its debut in the bond market by raising 20 billion rupees to 25 billion rupees through five-year bonds, according to the sources. "NTPC Green Energy is keen to go for shorter duration paper, but may also opt for 10-year notes if it gets sufficient interest from investors," one of the sources said. The sources requested anonymity as the talks are private. Both the companies did not reply to a Reuters email seeking comment. NHPC had raised around 19.45 billion rupees in early May through separately transferable redeemable principal part bonds with six-to-15-year maturities. "Short-end rates are lower and there is a decent spread between a three-to-five year and a 10-year paper, which is encouraging both the firms to go for such issuance," the second source said. Market participants expect the short-term bond yields to ease further as the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision, due later in the day, is expected to boost demand for bonds.
