State of Emergency lifted in Banks Peninsula as slip holds

1News12-05-2025
The local State of Emergency on Banks Peninsula has been lifted after monitoring of a slip in Akaroa showed no further significant land movement.
Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger lifted the State of Emergency at 3pm today, saying monitoring equipment at a slip in Akaroa had revealed there had been "no further significant land movement".
"With that information, we're now in a position to make a decision on the evacuation zone, begin work on the slip remediation options and lift the State of Emergency."
Emergency services were called to Lighthouse Rd on May 1 due to a large crack in the road, with four homes evacuated as a precaution due to risk of slips.
The team had been working with property owners and businesses in Akaroa and would continue to do so, said Mauger.
"It's been a big two weeks for this community and for the team working on the response, and I'd like to thank everyone for their hard work and patience."
Christchurch City Council would keep a close eye on the area as the ground in the area was "still saturated", he added.
"A designation has been made under the Building Act on the area, so we can react if needed."
Three States of Emergency were declared after the April 30 weather event — in the Selwyn district and Christchurch City and one local declaration in Banks Peninsula. All were now lifted.
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula were now both in a recovery period and the focus would be on repairing damaged infrastructure.

Nelson Tasman Region To Transition To Recovery On Thursday 17 July 2025

Tasman Mayor Tim King has given notice that Nelson Tasman will begin a transition period, moving from a state of emergency into a recovery focus, following the impacts from the severe weather the region experienced in June and July 2025. The State of Emergency will expire and The Notice of Local Transition period, under Section 94B of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002, takes effect at 4.47pm on Thursday 17 July 2025 and ends on Thursday 14 August 2025 unless it is extended or ends before then. Mayor King extended his thanks to all the agencies, community groups and volunteers who had supported the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management response. "For the second time in three weeks we're transitioning to recovery. Our community has faced two major weather events, and we have seen significant impacts across the region. While we are moving from a state of emergency, this transition period means that support continues to be available to those affected. "A big thank you to everyone involved, including the many in our community who have supported, and continue to support, their friends, whānau, and neighbours. "Our partner agencies have once again stepped up to support our communities in times of need. We're especially grateful to those who offered assistance from outside our region, thank you for your continued generosity and commitment." Nelson Mayor Nick Smith was encouraged by the shift to the transition period. "The timing is right this Thursday for us to move from the state of emergency from last Friday's storm to the transition phase of recovery. The major outstanding impact on Nelson is the closure of Rocks Road. Good progress is being made on stabilising the cliff and I am hopeful of it re-opening by the end of the week. Nelson by the weekend will be back to normal and fully open for business.' Using Scoop for work? Scoop is free for personal use, but you'll need a licence for work use. Weather Saturday: Thousands of homes without power after another night of wild weather

The Nelson-Tasman region remains under a state of emergency, with evacuations, widespread flooding, slips, power cuts, and pleas to conserve water. Tasman Mayor Tim King says areas hit hard two weeks ago have gone from "a bit of a cleanup job" to needing "a complete rebuild" after the latest rain. King appeared to choke up as he spoke to media on Saturday afternoon about the devastation. "I've spent my whole life in this community... it's pretty heartbreaking when you have these conversations with people... there's that sense of, where do you even start?" MetService says the front has moved eastwards away from New Zealand, and it has lifted most of its severe weather warnings and watches. But unsettled conditions will continue to affect many parts of the country through the weekend with periods of heavy rain in the west of the South Island. Meanwhile, Civil Defence is asking Kaiteriteri and Riwaka residents to continue to conserve water due to a problem with the water supply line.
