Singapore, London are costliest cities for luxury spending

'In light of ongoing uncertainty, trade tensions, and tariffs, our findings represent the final moment 'before' the current situation,' said Christian Gattiker, head of research at the Swiss bank. Next year's report 'will likely provide a fascinating 'after' perspective,' he said.
With the current 'unpredictable nature' of the world, Singapore is valued for its stability and security, while in Hong Kong, a recent investment-for-residency program generated 'significant interest' from wealthy individuals, Julius Baer said. Hotel suites prices rose 10.3% in Singapore, and fell 26.1% in Hong Kong.
The UK capital rose on the back of a 26.6% jump in the price of private education after legislative changes and a 29.7% gain in business class flights, according to the Swiss bank.
Still, London's appeal as a center for wealth had a 'rather turbulent ride' over the past year with the abolition of non-domiciled residency status, it said. This has helped cities such as Dubai, Milan, and Zurich, which have courted the global elite considering to move away from the UK, according to the report.
Dubai rose five spots to seventh place and is now a 'firm challenger' to the traditional bastions of wealth such as London, Monaco and Zurich, according to Julius Baer.
'The momentum of millionaires relocating to Dubai, which began during the pandemic, is predicted to continue,' the report said.
New York, ranked the eighth and is the only city in the Americas to feature in the top 10. Sao Paulo and Mexico City took the greatest tumbles in the survey, with the former falling seven places to 16 and the latter five places to 21.
The luxury sector is facing a 'downturn' following an 'endless buying spree' amid higher interest rates, slowing economic growth and a looming trade war, the report said. The biggest driver of price declines was technology. Bucking the trend was business class flights which jumped 18.2%.
Julius Baer's Lifestyle Index ranks 25 cities by analyzing residential property, cars, business class flights, school, degustation dinners and other luxuries. The bank surveyed high-net-worth individuals with bankable household assets of $1 million or more from February to March 2025.

Roche confirms guidance as H1 core operating profit up 6%

Swiss drugmaker Roche reported a better-than-expected first-half operating profit on Thursday, which was up 6% due to strong sales growth from breast cancer drug Phesgo and allergy treatment Xolair. Roche reported operating profit at 12 billion Swiss francs ($15.15 billion), above forecasts for around 11.7 billion, driven by higher sales and effective cost management, it said. Roche added that the appreciation of the franc against the U.S. dollar had an adverse impact on results reported in francs compared with constant exchange rates. At currency-adjusted rates, profit was up 11%. "We are confident in our continued strong momentum and resilience of our business due to our innovative on-market portfolio and pipeline," said CEO Thomas Schinecker. He said Roche was still targeting an increase in full-year adjusted earnings per share at a high single-digit percentage. Diagnostics division sales were stable at 7 billion francs, Roche said, citing growing demand for pathology solutions and blood screening tests as offsetting the effect of China's healthcare pricing reforms. Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Roche owns skincare brand La Roche-Posay. The label's products include cleansers, moisturisers, and sunscreens.

Altri completes purchase of 58.7% of sustainable textiles company AeoniQ

Portuguese industrial conglomerate Altri has completed the acquisition of 58.7% of the Swiss sustainable textiles company AeoniQ, which plans to build an industrial unit in Constância. HeiQ Materials AG, Boss, and MAS Holdings remain at the business as co-investors, it was announced on Wednesday. In a statement, Altri said that the investment includes a capital increase that "will allow AeoniQ to develop its commercial-scale production capacity, reinforcing its strategic vision of diversification into high-value cellulosic applications with low environmental impact." The acquisition will enable the development of the world's first AeoniQ industrial unit, which will be built at Altri's fibre plant in Caima, Constância, and is scheduled to start up in 2026 with an initial capacity of 1,750 tons per year. According to reports earlier this month, the investment in the project amounts to 90 million euros. "In addition to the existing pilot lines in Austria, a pre-industrial unit will be launched in Portugal in early 2026 to accelerate prototypes, partnerships with brands, and capsule collections," read the statement released on Wednesday. The business announced that AeoniQ "will benefit from the vertical integration of eucalyptus fib up to the finished yarn, with the subsequent incorporation of recycled raw materials such as cotton textile waste, agricultural waste, and bacterial cellulose derived from food waste." AeoniQ is a Swiss cleantech spin-off of HeiQ Materials AG, which has developed "the world's first biodegradable cellulosic filament with a positive climate impact, designed to replace polyester and nylon." "The AeoniQ platform is set to transform the global textile industry by offering a fully circular, plastic-free alternative that replicates the performance of synthetic fibres—without their environmental impacts," said the business. Quoted in the statement, the CEO of the Altri group, José Soares de Pina, said that this acquisition, in addition to diversifying the company's operations, strengthens its presence in the sustainable textile fibres sector, "opening up new avenues of value creation for the group's different stakeholders."
