Partner on force testifies in trial of man accused of killing CPD Officer Andrés Mauricio Vásquez Lasso
Montano, now 21, is charged with multiple counts of murder and other felonies, accused of fatally shooting Vásquez Lasso during a chase on March 1, 2023.
Other officers who knew Vásquez Lasso and responded the day of the murder also took the stand Tuesday.
As each officer who testified, prosecutors had the chance to show their body-worn cameras, revealing firsthand, up-close video of what happened that day.
Officer Vásquez Lasso's family either stepped out for some of those videos, while others stayed and held tissues inside the courtroom.
First to take the stand was Miguel Enciso, Officer Vásquez Lasso's friend and former partner on the force. The pair were assisting officers during a domestic violence call in the Southwest Side's Gage Park neighborhood during a domestic violence call that day in 2023, when Officer Vásquez Lasso was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Enciso testified that they caught up to the defendant, Montano, was 18 at the time and was trying to flee the scene of the domestic dispute he was having with his then 37-year-old girlfriend.
Enciso said he heard gunshots from both Officer Vásquez Lasso's and Montano's weapons simultaneously. Montano was shot in the jaw.
Officer Enciso said he ran over to Montano, rather than his partner, because he thought Montano still had a gun. Enciso said he recovered the gun.
At one point, prosecutors handed the weapon to Enciso in court. Enciso re-identified the weapon as Montano's.
He testified that Montano shouted: "Just kill me! Just kill me!" and "Why didn't you kill me?" while calling for his girlfriend.
When Officer Enciso told the defendant to be quiet, using expletives, he said Montano responded in turn, "You [do the same]. That's why I killed your [expletive] boy."
Montano was in court Wednesday, as were some of his supporters.
On Tuesday, the defense said the jury would hear from Montano at some point. He has yet to take the stand.

The Gainesville Police Department said in a news release that the incident occurred on Sunday, July 13, in the 3100 block of U.S. Highway 82, where officers responded to a report of a "major accident" involving a 4x4 rollover. The police said four children whose ages ranged from 6 to 13 were riding on a Polaris side-by-side vehicle in a parking lot when the driver lost control, after which the Polaris rolled over and its occupants were ejected. 'When officers arrived, CPR had already started on one of the occupants, who was reported to be 6 years of age,' the news release stated. 'All four children were transported by medical services to the hospital. One child was air lifted to a metroplex hospital, two were treated locally. Despite all efforts, the 6-year-old succumbed to his injuries.' According to the family, Raul and the three kids — among them his brothers, ages 9 and 13 — were riding on the UTV when it rolled over and pinned Raul underneath. 'It turned on one side, and my baby fell to the side,' Juarez told WFAA. 'It fell on him.' The outlet also reported that Raul's 9-year-old brother suffered pelvic fractures and bruises on his lungs and liver, adding he was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, July 16. Raul was a member of the Ennis Soccer Association, who remembered him as one of their beloved players in a Facebook tribute. 'This is a loss none of us could have prepared for. Raul was more than just a player on the field," the association wrote, noting, "he was a part of our family. A teammate, a brother, a friend. His spirit, kindness, and smile touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.' The statement continued, 'As a community, we stand together in grief, offering strength, comfort, and unwavering support to the Chavez family during this unimaginable time." Raul's family recently purchased new gear for the child ahead of soccer season. 'We bought him goalie gloves a couple of days before,' Juarez told WFAA. A GoFundMe has since been created for Raul's family to pay for funeral costs and medical expenses. 'There are no words to describe the depth of this tragedy,' the fundraiser organizer wrote. 'Raul was a bright light — joyful, kind, full of curiosity and love. His goal was to be a soccer goalie and could not wait to make those dreams come true.' The Ennis Soccer Association announced that a candlelight vigil will be held in Raul's memory on Monday, July 21, at Veterans Park. President Donald Trump bowed to a storm of public pressure and ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to release some documents in the Jeffrey Epstein sex case after The Wall Street Journal published a purported racy happy birthday letter from Trump to the notorious pedophile. In a late-night social media post, Trump told Bondi to release whatever information she could, a move that would effectively reverse the administration's previous stance that there would be nothing further disclosed. The president furiously blamed Democrats and claimed there was no damaging evidence about him in the files, even though the issue has caused a massive split within his right-wing MAGA movement. 'If there was a 'smoking gun' on Epstein, why didn't the Dems, who controlled the 'files' for four years … use it?' he wrote Friday on his social media site, referring to former President Biden's term in the White House. 'Because they had nothing.' UFC legend Diego Sanchez arrested after allegedly firing gun out of car
UFC legend Diego Sanchez has been arrested. Police say Sanchez fired a gun out of the window of a Jeep Gladiator as it passed the scene of a crash on a New Mexico highway. KRQE first reported the news. Police pursued and pulled it over. They determined Sanchez was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver was not arrested. Sanchez denied shooting a gun but acknowledged there was a handgun in the car. Police say they found three rounds on the passenger side before the driver admitted Sanchez fired the gun. An empty black Glock 42 was also found in the vehicle. Per online records, Sanchez was charged with shooting at or from a motor vehicle (no bodily harm) and negligent use of a firearm (discharge).
