Elizabeth City State University blasted for slow response to active shooter on campus

Daily Mail28-04-2025
Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina has been slammed for its slow response after an active shooter stormed the campus early Sunday morning.
At least one person died and six others were injured after a shooting broke out around 12.30am in the center of the historically black university's campus right after Yard Fest - a school spirit event that is part of its week-long Viking Fest celebration.
Mark Hurlbut, a student who was on campus at the time, said he heard the gunshots from his room but was not sent an alert from the school about what was happening until about 30 minutes after shots rang out.
'I heard the gunshots through my window and through the walls. Campus honestly didn't send out any alerts of any kind until maybe 20-30 minutes after it happened,' Hurlbut told WITN.
'I didn't think nothing of it, but then it finally clicked. This happened right outside my door.'
An unidentified 24-year-old man, who was not a student, died in the shooting, the university said.
Four others, including three students, sustained gunshot wounds while two other students were hurt during the 'subsequent commotion,' the school stated.

None of their injuries were considered life-threatening and all of them were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions are unknown.
It is unclear what led up to the shooting or who the suspect is.
DailyMail.com contacted Elizabeth City State University and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for comment.
Another student, Zion Upchurch, told the outlet the violent incident not only scared him but made him sad.
'I had left right before all of this transpired, but I had heard the gunshots from my dorm, and then I had got a phone call saying some people had got shot and I was just trying to figure out who did,' Upchurch recalled.

'I feel- I'm sad because the person that did pass away doesn't even go here, so it just doesn't make sense.'
Following the shooting, the college took to Facebook and said: 'The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all members of the Viking community affected by this tragedy.'
The school said counseling services were available around 10.30am Sunday and also increased control on campus grounds.

Kanye West hits out at 'absurd' sex trafficking lawsuit from ex-assistant

Kanye West hit back after being accused of sexual assault and sex trafficking by his former personal assistant in a bombshell complaint. Lauren Pisciotta originally sued the Gold Digger rapper, 48, last June, alleging that he stalked and sexually harassed her while she worked for him—claims he previously denied. After amending her complaint in October, she has reportedly now made fresh allegations in a second complaint, accusing him of assault, battery, sex trafficking, and false imprisonment. In a new statement via his representatives, West blasted the claims as 'absurd,' noting that Pisciotta has advanced her legal complaint 'four times'. 'Each new revision contradicts the others; each is more absurd and outlandish than all previous claims combined,' the Yeezy spokesperson told 'Does Ms. Pisciotta actually believe her confabulations? We cannot know. But this breathless new instalment of fantasy fiction discredits all past, present, and future testimony.' The response continued: 'We stand ready to annihilate Ms. Pisciotta's tall tales before a jury—an exoneration so inevitable that even she, lost in her fog of fantasy, must surely see it coming.' Yeezy representative Milo Yiannopoulos also issued a statement regarding 'the absurdity of Pisciotta's quadruply revised claims, which now include kidnapping, battery, rape, false imprisonment, and even sex trafficking.' 'She picked the one rapper who loathes violence, has never been arrested, and doesn't even own a gun,' Yiannopoulos said. In the original documents obtained by TMZ, Pisciotta, who worked under the dad-of-four between 2021 and 2022, said that the pair travelled to San Francisco to break ground on his Donda school. While on the work trip, the OnlyFans model claimed that he made unwanted advances, which she tried to fend off, before he kissed her and asked personal questions about her vagina. She further alleged that, during a writing session in his hotel suite, West masturbated and touched her vagina but fell asleep mid-sentence. The outlet reports that he then showed up at her hotel room to use the shower but shoved her onto a bed and pinned her down, forcing his penis into her mouth. Influencer Pisciotta reportedly begged him to stop and then 'froze in shock and 'fear'—the Grammy winner eventually apologised and walked out of her room. It was also claimed that he offered Pisciotta as a sexual gift to an unnamed person in exchange for letting him have sex with their partner. She added that the musician 'notoriously offered women as sexual gifts to men'. After West's public response this weekend, Pisciotta's attorney, Lisa Bloom, also spoke out. 'While Kanye West's publicist has come up with a slickly worded (and outrageously false and defamatory) attack on Ms. Pisciotta, Kanye himself has publicly admitted much of what she's claiming,' Bloom began. 'Kanye's publicist is deafeningly silent on Kanye's own admissions, which will destroy him in court. 'We look forward to seeing him there, where he cannot hide behind a high-priced spin team.' West hired Pisciotta in July 2021, and she was promoted to Chief of Staff for his various companies the following year. She alleged that she was fired in October 2022, and offered $3million (£2.2m) in severance but never received the money. Last year, she filed a lawsuit suing him for breach of contract, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, and a hostile work environment. The fashion designer has already denied all allegations made against him once before, accusing his former employee of 'blackmail and extortion'. 'In response to these baseless allegations, Ye will be filing a lawsuit against Ms. Pisciotta, who actively pursued him sexually to coerce employment and other material benefits, then engaged in blackmail and extortion when her advances were rejected,' his team told TMZ last June. More Trending 'It is evident that Ms. Pisciotta leveraged her association with Ye and his company, and her proximity to him, to seek material gains, clout, and employment through inappropriate means.' In mounting claims last October, she claimed that he drugged and raped her while attending a party thrown by Sean 'Diddy' Combs. It's not the only blow dealt to the rapper. Rubicon Festival in Slovakia was cancelled on July 11 following a huge outcry after Ye was set to headline. Got a story? Man stabbed through armour during historic re-enactment gone wrong

A man wearing armour was seriously injured by a sword during a battle re-enactment this weekend. The 37-year-old man from Horsham, West Sussex, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton after the accident at Bodiam Castle on Sunday. He was a part of a living history demonstration at Bodiam Castle, where volunteers showed what medieval combat may have looked like in full armour. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward after the man was stabbed through his visor with his opponent's sword. A Sussex Police spokesperson added: 'He suffered a head injury and he is currently in a serious condition at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.' DI Barry Chandler said police are treating the incident as accidental and offering support to the victim's family. 'His opponent, a 36-year-old man also from Horsham, and the organisers are helping us with our inquiries,' he added. 'We know the re-enactment had drawn a large crowd and understand that anyone who witnessed the scene could have found this distressing. 'We are appealing to anyone who has photographs or videos of the interaction that led to the injury to contact us so we can gain a clear understanding of what happened.' Historical reenactment, or living history, as it's also known, first took root in Northern Europe in the 1890s. As of 2022, there were around 140 reenactment societies in the UK, with around 20,000 enthusiasts devoting their time, money, and expertise to the hobby. While these groups recreate all periods between the Roman Ages up to the Vietnam War, activities remain broadly similar: camp tasks, arms drill, sentry duties, historical crafts and skirmishes between troops. There's a space for everyone, no matter their interest. More Trending But the hobby isn't without its dangers. A woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a similar accident in 2020, slicing her throat open with a sword in Kent during a Viking re-enactment. A witness said at the time: 'They've got proper swords. They were practising and he caught her neck. It really was an accident, a terrible one, so I'm glad she is okay now.' World War Two re-enactors were injured in 2017 when explosions at Audley End House in Essex went wrong. The men were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and made a full recovery.
