Soccer-England's substitutes have become a tight-knit group at Euro 2025, says Kelly
ZURICH (Reuters) -Forward Chloe Kelly, who came off the bench to score a 110th-minute winner in the Euro 2022 final, said England's substitutes had become a tight-knit group at this year's tournament with their own WhatsApp group and goal celebration.
With the defending champions playing Sweden in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals on Thursday, Kelly, whose shirt-waving celebration was the defining image of the last final, described the camaraderie among England's super subs.
Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones scored as substitutes in England's 6-1 thrashing of Wales, and both made a beeline for the bench, snapping their fingers.
"A little group of us have a group chat, the finishers as you called it, and the positive 'clicks' we called it on the bench," Kelly said at England's training base in Zurich.
"You've probably seen we all click (our fingers), and everyone's like, 'What are they doing?'
"We said if one of us comes on and scores, let's do that as our celebration," she added.
"We work really hard on the training pitch and in the gym. Probably this sometimes goes unnoticed, but it's about sticking together, being at our best for when called upon, and training hard to get the best out of each other."
The image of the 27-year-old Arsenal forward whirling her shirt above her head after her goal at Wembley is among the most renowned in European women's football.
Kelly knows that there are football fans with tattoos of that image. The notoriety she has received since then took some adjusting to, she said.
"But I'm just me, a girl from West London enjoying football, and that's what I'll continue to be throughout my career," she said. "I just love the game of football, and hopefully we can have many special memories as England together."
Kelly still watches the video of that goal, a tap-in from close range, on YouTube.
"I think it's just a special memory for me, one that I watch quite often if I ever need a little smile," Kelly said. "It's an incredible memory for me and my family. My mum sends it to me quite often as well. So it's nice to have such a special memory at an incredible stadium like Wembley."
There was concern earlier this year that Kelly might not make Sarina Wiegman's Euros squad because she was barely playing at Manchester City. She publicly expressed a desire to move ahead of January's transfer window, and Arsenal signed her first on a loan spell and then a free transfer after her City contract expired.

Rugby-Winger Feyi-Waboso returns for England against the United States
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Autumn International - England v New Zealand - Allianz Stadium Twickenham, London, Britain - November 2, 2024 England's Immanuel Feyi-Waboso scores their first try Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File photo (Reuters) -Coach Steve Borthwick has selected Immanuel Feyi-Waboso on the wing and could hand debuts to as many as six players when England face the United States in the final match of their summer tour in Washington DC on Saturday. Feyi-Waboso returns from a suspension picked up playing for an England XV against France XV last month, which ruled him out of the back-to-back wins over Argentina in the first two matches on tour. It was his first game since December after injury had curtailed the second half of the season and denied him a potential call-up by the British & Irish Lions. England are without a host of regular players who are in Australia with the Lions, meaning Borthwick has cast his selection net wide. Fullback Joe Carpenter, centre Max Ojomoh and lock Arthur Clark all make their international debuts in the starting XV, while hooker Gabriel Oghre, flyhalf Charlie Atkinson and centre Oscar Beard are set to earn a first cap off the bench. "There's been a great spirit in the squad throughout this tour," Borthwick said. "The players have worked hard for each other and pushed standards every day. Those selected this weekend have earned their chance through their effort and attitude. "We aim to keep building the squad, learn from every experience, and deliver a performance that our supporters can be proud of." Cadan Murley takes his place on the wing and Luke Northmore keeps his spot in the centres to partner Ojomoh. Captain George Ford has a new half-back partner in Jack van Poortvliet, who scored a dramatic late winning try in the 22-17 victory over Argentina last Saturday. Ford's 101 caps is more than the entire rest of the starting XV put together (96). Curtis Langdon is the hooker, with props Bevan Rodd and Asher Opoku-Fordjour either side of him, while the second row is made up of Alex Coles and Clark. Alex Dombrandt is at number eight, with flanker Chandler Cunningham-South and Guy Pepper making up the back row. It is just the second time England will play the United States on American soil, having last toured the country in 2001. They have won all seven previous meetings with their hosts. England team: 15–Joe Carpenter, 14–Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, 13–Luke Northmore, 12–Max Ojomoh, 11–Cadan Murley, 10–George Ford (captain), 9–Jack van Poortvliet, 8–Alex Dombrandt, 7–Guy Pepper, 6–Chandler Cunningham-South, 5–Arthur Clark, 4–Alex Coles, 3–Asher Opoku-Fordjour, 2–Curtis Langdon, 1–Bevan Rodd Replacements: 16–Gabriel Oghre, 17–Fin Baxter, 18–Trevor Davison, 19–Ted Hill, 20–Ben Curry, 21–Harry Randall, 22–Charlie Atkinson, 23–Oscar Beard. Soccer-Sweden do not fear facing holders England in Euro quarter-finals, says Asllani
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group C - Poland v Sweden - Stadion Allmend, Lucerne, Switzerland - July 8, 2025 Sweden's Kosovare Asllani REUTERS/Matthew Childs/File photo ZURICH (Reuters) -Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani said her team do not fear England but instead have a healthy respect for the European champions ahead of their Euro 2025 quarter-final showdown on Thursday. After England's 6-1 thrashing of Wales to end the group stage, midfielder Ella Toone said "Sweden should be scared". "We do respect England, the team they have and what they have achieved so far," Asllani said at a press conference on Wednesday. "But fear -- no, we don't have the word fear in our dictionary. "We look at the word courage. We want to be a courageous side. And we have a perfect game plan to win this match." England dispatched the Swedes 4-0 in the 2022 Euro semi-finals en route to winning their first major title, but the two teams most recently drew in a pair of Euro qualifiers last year. "I think both we and England are better now than we were in 2022, better teams, better players, better in shape overall," said coach Peter Gerhardsson. "I hope for a good game tomorrow, and I hope to win." Heading into the knockout stage, there is the potential for penalties, and while Asllani said they prepare for a shootout, nobody likes them. "It is part of the game and you practice it before, because there is a risk that it might go all the way to a penalty shootout," she said. "But there's no team in the world who wouldn't want to decide it before that." Sweden lost to Canada in a penalty shootout at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic final. Gerhardsson said a shootout is one of the most difficult aspects of the game to prepare for. "Everyone has played a game," the 65-year-old said. "When you look at a squad of 23 players and you ask, how many of these players take penalties in their clubs? Not very many. And how many of those are absolutely decisive? Maybe one. "It's a fairly complex thing. It's one of the most unpredictable things in football to try to do this, because you need the mental acuity, you need the skill, you need all of that." There have been complaints about Stadion Letzigrund, which is the stadium for Thursday's match and hosts the annual Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League athletics meet. England captain Leah Williamson said their team's family members were not fans because the running track creates distance between the pitch and the stands. "I don't really like those (running) lanes. I want those small, intimate arenas," Gerhardsson said. "But I have to say, most recently, our supporters made this arena brilliant." Sweden trounced Germany 4-1 in a group game last week at Letzigrund. (Reporting by Lori Ewing in Oberentfelden, Switzerland; editing by Pritha Sarkar)
