The Kerala Story's National Award win 'insult to noble tradition of Indian cinema': Angry CM Pinarayi Vijayan slams jury

Hindustan Times3 days ago
The Kerala Story was among the big winners for Bollywood at the 71st National Film Awards, announced on Friday. The film won two awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography. But even as the team behind the film celebrated, the triumph erupted into a political controversy, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan slamming the jury. The Kerala Story starred Adah Sharma in the lead.
Kerala CM slams film's win
The controversial film on religious conversions in the state was opposed by CM Vijayan and his party when it originally released in 2023. On Friday, after the announcement of the awards, the CM took to X (formerly Twitter) and alleged that the move "lent credibility" to a narrative rooted in the "divisive" ideology of the Sangh Parivar.
'By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the National Film Awards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar. Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision,' the CM wrote in his tweet.
Kerala CM also said that the awards jury has insulted the noble tradition of Indian cinema that stood for "religious brotherhood" and national integration.
"Through this, they are implementing the Sangh Parivar agenda of turning cinema into a weapon to implement the communal agenda. We strongly protest against this action. Every Malayali and all democratic believers in the country should raise their voice against this injustice. We must rally against politics that turn art into a weapon to foster communalism," he added.
The Kerala Story's National Award win
At the 71st National Film Awards, The Kerala Story won Best Director and Best Cinematography awards.
Directed by Sudipto Sen and starring Adah Sharma, The Kerala Story, which was released on May 5, 2023, emerged as one of the most successful films at the box office. However, the movie came in for severe criticism from some quarters, with many, including Opposition leaders, alleging that it falsely claimed that 32,000 women, who went missing from Kerala, were forced into terrorism upon alleged conversion or sold to ISIS as sex slaves.
The movie faced a backlash in several states, with the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government imposing a ban on screening the film in the state.

Fiscal fitness

Mansplaining Donald Duck is my superpower Nobody is focusing on fiscal fitness, I said to Kamala as we walked briskly round our neighbourhood park. She narrowed her eyes as she realised I was talking about money, then confessed she didn't understand money. Most Indians know how to make money and hoard money but are clueless about the Budget or things like American tariffs and what impact these have on our daily lives. Our basic fear is that everyone, including banks, netas, the markets and every person who calls on the phone, is trying to loot our hard-earned money. I puffed my chest out to mansplain money matters: Imagine if you had a friend – a very rich, important, delusional friend – who runs a chain of veggie shops. Imagine if you grew tomatoes in your farm and you wanted him to buy these tomatoes and sell them on… I could see I was losing Clueless Kamala so I tried to make it even simpler: If this close friend, based on his friendship alone, was charging you 25% more to sell your tomatoes in his shop, it would make tomatoes costlier in his shop while creating a glut of tomatoes in your farm. Kamala looked confused but I continued: Imagine if this friend saw you buying Kerosene from Puttaniah and levied a penalty because he didn't like that. Plus, this friend tells everyone that he also stopped the fight we had last weekend and that we would be divorced by now if not for him. She perked up: 'Were we fighting with our neighbor Pakkath Mane Parvathi because her sons keep lobbing balls into our compound and creating destruction every time they jump over the compound wall? But we are still playing cricket with them.' Kamala was finally getting the hang of international affairs. I had made the whole thing as logical as The Kerala Story getting the national award. She sat down on the bench and gave me a withering look: 'This friend of yours sounds like a bully. I don't think he is anyone's friend.' I hummed an old Shammi Kapoor song: Tariff karoon kya uski jisne usse banaya. I told her he was a self-made man so we couldn't blame God or Nehru for this situation. Donald Duck used to be a harmless cartoon without pants when we were growing up. He still is – but the world is not laughing anymore. Urvashi Questions 71st National Award Jury: "'How Did Shah Rukh Khan Win Best Actor?"

New Delhi: The 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, and Shah Rukh Khan 's fans had a big reason to celebrate. The superstar bagged his first-ever National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan – a major milestone in his 33-year-long career. But not everyone is convinced about the decision. South actress Urvashi, who won Best Supporting Actress for Ullozhukku, has opened up about what she feels is a lack of fairness by the jury. In a chat with Asianet News, she pointed out a major concern: veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan only received the Best Supporting Actor award, even though his performance, according to her, deserved more. 'Vijayaraghavan is such a great actor. What exactly did the jury consider to distinguish between Vijayaraghavan's and Shah Rukh Khan's performances? How did one become a supporting actor and the other the best actor? On what criteria? We should raise such questions, as we too are taxpaying citizens. Kutettan (referring to Vijayaraghavan) has decades of experience in cinema. The film wasn't a big-budget, 250-day shoot kind of project like those in other languages,' she said. Urvashi further talked about how committed Vijayaraghavan was to his role in Pookkaalam, where he played a 100-year-old man. She mentioned that she was offered the role of his on-screen partner in the same film but had to say no because of the intense makeup demands. 'I was initially approached to play his pair in Pookkaalam. Still, I declined because the role required me to undergo a significant physical transformation, for which I would have had to be in the makeup chair for several hours. I told them, even if you pay me crores, I wouldn't do it. But he, at his age, endured all of that and performed. That alone deserves at least a Special Mention. How is he only a supporting actor? On what basis was that decided? That's all I'm asking — there must be some fairness,' Urvashi added. While Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail, Vijayaraghavan's award came in the supporting actor category. He played opposite veteran actress K. P. A. C. Leela in Pookkaalam, a Malayalam film released in 2023. Interestingly, Urvashi also shared her Best Supporting Actress award with Janki Bodiwala, who won for her work in the Gujarati film Vash.

Urvashi slams National Award jury for labelling her ‘supporting actress' despite lead role

Veteran actor Urvashi, who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her role in the acclaimed Malayalam drama 'Ullozhukku', has publicly challenged the jury's decision. She asked pointed questions about the criteria used, saying, 'This is not pension money to silently accept.' Urvashi argued that her role was clearly a leading one—she and Parvathy Thiruvothu were both in contention for Best Actress. Recalling a similar experience back in 2006, she highlighted perceived age bias and backstage politics. She has urged greater transparency, calling on Minister Suresh Gopi to examine the awards process and ensure fairness for Malayalam cinema.
