Cowboys ‘flirting' with ‘fine line' of competitive practices without throwing punches
OXNARD, Calif. — It's easy to like Brian Schottenheimer. He's friendly, funny, authentic and optimistic. The way he has carried himself through the first six months as Dallas Cowboys head coach is similar to how he was as a coaching consultant for the team back in 2022. What hasn't been on display much in front of reporters and fans is the coaching side of Schottenheimer, where he has to rip a player or the entire team. That happened Wednesday during Dallas' second training camp practice. Advertisement After some pushing and shoving spilled over into the fence area behind one sideline, safety Markquese Bell threw a punch that caught cornerback Troy Pride in the back of the neck. An angry Schottenheimer stopped the team drill portion, got everyone huddled up in the middle of the field and ripped into the group with several expletives. The clean version: The next player to throw a punch is getting thrown out of practice. 'Did you guys hear what I said?' Schottenheimer responded with a smile when asked for a recap. 'I definitely will not (repeat it). My wife was on me last night about a few things I said. Here's the deal, I love the intensity. These guys are working their asses off. I love that. But there's a tempo that we discuss every day. We've talked about it multiple times. There are going to be those events that happen during a game. If you throw a punch, you're getting kicked out of the game. 'And, along with that, you're getting fined about $45,000. So, do we have the discipline that when those things happen, not only not throw a punch, but sometimes it's better to go and grab your own guy, your player, your brother, and pull him out of the fray so he doesn't do anything messed up? 'I love the way they're practicing, but it went too far. I had warned them before. And I made it very clear, we're not throwing punches. If you throw a punch, there's going to be a consequence, just like in a game, and you're out of practice.' There were some brief skirmishes on the first and third day of camp practices, but nothing like Wednesday. Here's an example from Thursday: CeeDee Lamb — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) July 24, 2025 The first four training camp practices are like organized team activities and minicamp. No pads. It's helmets and shorts. The full pads finally come on Sunday. If there has been pushing, shoving and punches already, what will happen when the hitting starts? 'There are a lot of guys that are antsy to put pads on,' Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb said. 'We do have to have a lot more discipline. I do feel like we have to learn how to practice. Besides that, the energy is going to be up. … I do love what (Schottenheimer) is doing here. We got to instill more discipline between the guys, myself included. … We got to be professionals at the end of the day.' Advertisement The energy at practices has been ratcheted up from previous seasons. It's all by design. Schottenheimer has been running around, working to set the tone with his enthusiasm. Other members of the coaching staff have been following his lead. Music has been playing throughout practice at a high decibel level, mostly hip hop but also some country and rock. If a player or coach isn't bringing energy throughout practice, it will show, but there's a fine line that can't be crossed. During the team's opening news conference Monday, Schottenheimer said the biggest emphasis would be on having a very physical training camp by maximizing their padded practices. The goal is to do that without players taking swings at each other. 'I think it's a good thing,' Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said of some of the early camp dust-ups. 'Maybe one of them we had some punches going, but other than that, it's football. It's high emotions. You got guys out here practicing and competing for their life, competing for jobs. You got to have that edge. That's the difference right there, how passionate these guys are. 'They're being taught and being told to compete every day. Some guys compete in different ways. I think when you put that together, at times, you're going to have those disagreements or have those frustrations. But they've been doing a good job, for the most part, looking at each other in the face and realizing this is my teammate and I'm not going to take it there. Just as important is understanding that you can't take it there on game day, either. Coach says it all the time: We can be competitive without being combative. 'I think it's a fine line. I think we're flirting with it. And I think that's healthy.'

Top-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler would sacrifice one major championship to end Cowboys' Super Bowl drought
Scottie Scheffler has dominated on the golf course in recent years. This year alone, the world No. 1 golfer has won two major tournaments — the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Scheffler is also a two-time Masters Tournament champion, but he admitted he would sacrifice at least one of his four coveted major titles in exchange for seeing his beloved Dallas Cowboys reach the mountaintop. "Gosh, I don't know. I would trade one, for sure, for a Super Bowl," the University of Texas alum responded when asked during a recent edition of the "Pardon My Take" podcast whether he would trade a major to see the Cowboys win it all. Those comments follow an admission Scheffler made before teeing off at The Open last week at Royal Portrus about the sport he dominates not completely fulfilling him before teeing off at The Open last week at Royal Portrus. While Scheffler is a New Jersey native, he has resided in Dallas for the majority of his life and is a self-proclaimed fan of the Cowboys. While the Waste Management Phoenix Open is not one of golf's four majors, Scheffler noted he would sacrifice several of his victories in that tournament in favor of seeing the Cowboys hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy. "I've been rooting for a Super Bowl for a long time as well," the top-ranked golfer said before jokingly suggesting he's dealt with more disappointment when it comes to football than he has in golf. "A lot of hard work has gone into cheering on the Boys." The Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles in the franchise's history. However, the upcoming 2025 season marks three decades since the team has won a championship. The Cowboys have also experienced limited postseason success over that span, and the have failed to advance to a conference championship game since the 1995 season. During Scheffler's lifetime, he's seen Dallas win just five playoff games. A hamstring injury derailed Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's 2024 season. The team finished with a 7-10 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Mike McCarthy was not retained as the head coach.
