Syngenta to Become Global Leader in Biologicals; Expanding Nature Inspired Solutions for Farmers

Business Wire2 days ago
BASEL, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Syngenta is accelerating the rollout of its nature-inspired, science-based biological solutions, responding to rising demand for sustainable, high-performance tools that help farmers boost productivity efficiently and responsibly. It also contributes toward Syngenta's fulfilment of commitments outlined in its Sustainability Priorities.
Jonathan Brown, Global Head Biologicals & Seedcare, comments: 'With our recent partnerships and acquisitions and extended manufacturing capacities, Syngenta is positioning itself as the leader in biologicals. Our scientific expertise is at the forefront of our research and development efforts to provide farmers with the next generation of biologicals, helping them transition towards more sustainable farming practices, such as regenerative agriculture.'
In December 2024, the company acquired Intrinsyx Bio, a California-based start-up specializing in the development of nutrient-use efficiency products. Most recently, in early 2025, Syngenta concluded the integration of Novartis' Strains and Natural Products Collection, the repository of natural compounds and genetic strains for agricultural use. These additions will accelerate the development of biologicals, bringing new tools to the market as a sustainable complement to conventional crop protection solutions.
Also in 2025, Syngenta opened a 22,000 m² biologicals facility in Orangeburg, South Carolina, in the United States, which is purpose-built to produce 16,000 tons of biostimulants annually. This new manufacturing facility complements Syngenta's existing global network of biologicals' manufacturing facilities in Brazil, Italy, India and Norway.
These strategic milestones effectively enhance both Syngenta's R&D, operating out of the centers of excellence in Stein, Switzerland; Jealott's Hill, UK; Atessa, Italy; and production capacity for biologicals, facilitating Syngenta's roll out of its biologicals pipeline, with multiple candidates demonstrating strong commercial potential with projected annual sales above USD 100 million.
Syngenta Biologicals posted strong Q1 2025 results, with standout performance in North America and China. The global biologicals market is growing at around 10% CAGR and is projected to reach nearly USD 20 billion by 2030, according to AgbioInvestor and Syngenta's estimate, underlining the pivotal role of biologicals in the future of sustainable farming.
Derived predominantly from naturally occurring substances, biologicals offer significant potential for sustainable agriculture. The market can be categorized into three main categories:
Biocontrols – Naturally derived products for managing pests, diseases, and weeds.
Biostimulants – Products enhancing natural plant processes to improve abiotic stress tolerance and crop quality.
Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) products – Any substance or microorganism to improve macro- and micronutrient availability and uptake to promote growth and enhance yield.

Giants exercise contract option on manager Bob Melvin for the 2026 season

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants showed their confidence in manager Bob Melvin on Tuesday, exercising his contract option for the 2026 season. San Francisco was 45-40 and in third place in the NL West heading into the second game of a four-game set at Arizona on Tuesday night. The 63-year-old Melvin left the San Diego Padres to return home to the Bay Area and manage the Giants last year for the job he always dreamed of doing as a former catcher with the organization. This is his 22nd year as a major league manager. 'Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we're really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball,' Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey said in a statement. 'His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he's the right person to continue guiding this team forward.' Melvin, a three-time Manager of the Year who has won the award in both leagues, has a career regular-season record of 1,642-1,547 with eight postseason appearances while guiding Arizona, Seattle, Oakland, San Diego and now the Giants. The club went 80-82 in his first season last year. 'I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group,' Melvin said. 'I believe in what we're building here, and I appreciate the confidence that the Giants ownership group, Greg, Buster, Larry (Baer), Zack (Minasian) and the rest of the Giants' organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year, and I'm looking forward to the work ahead.' Melvin is a native of nearby Palo Alto, California. He attended the University of California-Berkeley and played for his hometown Giants from 1986-88. He replaced Gabe Kapler, who was fired with three days remaining in the 2023 season. The Giants haven't made the playoffs nor had a winning record since finishing with a franchise-record 107 victories to edge the 106-win Dodgers for the NL West title in 2021. In other Giants news, the team placed infielder Christian Koss on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled outfielder Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento. ___ AP MLB:

Tinder rolls out mandatory face verification for California users

West Hollywood-based Tinder is now requiring facial recognition scans for all users in California as part of its efforts to build trust among users and reduce the prevalence of scams and fraud that plague dating apps. The feature, called Face Check, prompts users to take a short video selfie that is used to verify their identity. The verification data allows Tinder, owned by Match Group, to check whether a person's face matches their uploaded photos. The scan is also used to check other photos on the app to detect if a user is impersonating someone else or operating duplicate accounts. The technology is from a company called FaceTec. Users' verification data will be stored for the lifetime of their Tinder account and deleted within 30 days of account closure. "As part of our continued efforts, we are always testing ways to deliver the best experience for our users to seek authentic connections," a Tinder spokesperson said. While Tinder already offers photo and ID verification features, they are optional. Face Check will be mandatory in some places in hopes of stopping bad actors and bots who rarely opt into voluntary verification measures. The new function is "about confirming that this person is a real, live person and not a bot or a spoofed account," said Yoel Roth, Match Group's vice president of trust and safety. Tinder has been adding safety features to help users feel more comfortable on the app, including "Are You Sure?" and "Does This Bother You?" prompts that pop up to police potentially unwelcome interactions, as well as newer additions like Share My Date. The timing of this pilot program comes as romance scams become more prevalent across the United States. Romance scammers typically create fake profiles on dating platforms or contact victims through social media platforms. They build relationships over time through frequent communication before fabricating emergencies and requesting money from their targets. With over 60 million Americans using online dating services in 2023, the stakes are significant. The Federal Trade Commission reported that romance scams cost victims more than $1.1 billion, highlighting the scale of the problem. Congressional action is also underway to address these concerns. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Romance Scam Prevention Act on June 23, which would require dating apps to notify users when they have interacted with someone removed from the platform for fraudulent activity. Face Check is already being used in Canada and Colombia. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Portions copyrighted by the respective providers.

Rocket Companies completes purchase of Redfin

Rocket Companies announced Tuesday that it has closed on its previously announced $1.75 billion deal for real estate brokerage Redfin, a deal that combines Redfin's home search platform with Detroit-based Rocket's mortgage lending. "I've used Redfin every day for the last 20 years. It helped me find and fall in love with my first home, completely changing how I thought about real estate," Varun Krishna, CEO of Rocket Companies said in a statement Tuesday. "The Redfin team is best-in-class at building simple, intuitive experiences - perfectly aligned with Rocket's vision for the future of homeownership." Founded in 2004, Seattle-based Redfin features more than 1 million for-sale and rental listings, draws nearly 50 million monthly visitors and operates a brokerage with more than 2,200 real estate agents nationwide. Redfin's web site Tuesday showed a revamped brand identity with the tagline "Redfin Powered by Rocket." "The gulf between the American Dream of homeownership and the reality has never been wider," Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin said in a statement. "The reason Rocket and Redfin came together was to bridge that gap - so the people who spend their days dreaming on can more easily use Rocket to turn those dreams into reality." Earlier this year, Rocket announced that it would acquire Redfin in an all-stock deal - one of two acquisitions expected for Rocket this year. The second is mortgage servicer Mr. Cooper Group Inc., which is expected to be an all-stock deal worth $9.4 billion. The acquisition has long-term potential, though the timing may present some short-term challenges, said Tim Nash, vice president emeritus and director of the McNair Center at Northwood University. "Currently, home sales are in a slump - the worst period in at least seven years for new and used home sales," he said. "Interest rates are high, and the economy seems to be slowing." Nash said Rocket is making a strategic play by acquiring Redfin's online tools and brand, as opposed to paying the expense to expand internally. The result could be a better experience for Rocket and Redfin consumers. "They are going to benefit from a lot of the greater online capacity, greater web presence that they'll incorporate from Redfin into Rocket," he said. "So the average customer should get more information and be better, more quickly served with a lot more information." To mark the occasion, the companies introduced Rocket Preferred Pricing. Clients who finance their home through Rocket Mortgage and purchase a home listed by a Redfin agent or with the help of a Redfin agent will have a 1% interest rate reduction for the first year or receive a lender credit at closing, up to $6,000. Rocket and Redfin officials said they plan to launch additional products for homebuyers, real estate agents and mortgage brokers in the coming months. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
