Daryl Dike hurts thigh, latest setback for American forward on West Brom
Daryl Dike will miss the start of West Bromwich Albion's season because of a thigh injury, the latest in a string of health setbacks for the 25-year-old American forward. The team said Friday that Dike was hurt in practice and will resume training after the international break in early September. Dike ruptured right Achilles tendon against Stoke on April 15, 2023, and returned on Jan. 7, 2024, when he played the first half in an FA Cup match against Aldershot. He tore his left Achilles against Ipswich that Feb. 10, just five games after coming back. Dike returned last Feb. 15 against Millwall in the first of 10 substitute appearances and started the season finale against Luton on May 3. Dike joined West Brom from Major League Soccer's Orlando in January 2022. He sustained a season-ending hamstring injury in his first start, against Peterborough on Jan. 22, 2022, and tore a thigh muscle in the 2022-23 opener against Stoke on July 30, 2022. He returned that Nov. 12 in West Brom's last game before the World Cup break, then tore his right Achilles tendon the following spring. SINGAPORE (AP) — French star Léon Marchand has broken one world record already in the 200-meter individual medley. He'll try for a second on Sunday in the 400 IM on the closing day of the swimming world championships in Singapore, a record he set two years ago in the worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. That mark is 4 minutes, 02.50 seconds. It would be Marchand's second gold in Singapore, where he's swimming a reduced schedule after winning four individual golds a year ago at the Paris Olympics. He will swim from Lane 1, entering with a relatively slow qualifying time. Summer McIntosh of Canada will be in the women's 400 IM, trying for her fourth gold. Her hope of winning five individual golds in the worlds — only Michael Phelps has done that — was crushed Saturday night when she was beaten by American Katie Ledecky in the 800 free. McIntosh finished third. Chinese 12-year-old Yu Zidi has the No. 3 qualifying time as she shoots for a medal. TORONTO (AP) — Defending champion Alexei Popyrin of Australia beat fifth-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. Popyrin, seeded 18th, will face the winner of the late match between top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and No. 14 Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. Zverev, ranked third in the world, ended up the top seed with top-ranked Jannik Sinner — the 2023 winner — and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz skipping the hard-court event that ends Thursday. No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic also sat out. Alex Michelsen reached the quarterfinals in the afternoon, topping fellow American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-3.
