Egypt to Enhance Cooperation with Türkiye in Transport Sector

Egypt hopes to strengthen its partnerships with Türkiye across maritime, land, rail, and air transport to establish efficient trade and navigation corridors linking Asia, Africa, and Europe, thereby facilitating the movement of goods and people.
Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Industry and Transport Minister, Kamel el Wazir, affirmed on Saturday that Egyptian-Turkish cooperation can play a pivotal role in advancing development across Africa.
'This can be achieved via joint projects such as port development, the establishment of cross-border railway lines and the launch of new logistics corridors to boost intra-African trade and open new markets for the continent's products,' Wazir said.
Speaking at the 2025 Global Connectivity in Transport Forum held in Istanbul, the Minister said, 'Egypt is working to realize a leap in its transportation sector through a national strategy aiming to have smart and sustainable transport, boost infrastructure, and promote regional-international connectivity.'
Egypt is considered Türkiye's number one trading partner in Africa. Turkish Ambassador to Egypt Salih Mutlu Sen earlier said the volume of new Turkish investments in the Egyptian market reached $500 million this year.
Head of the Egyptian-Turkish Business Council Adel el-Lami said strategic relations between both countries are moving at a stronger pace than they were before 2013 with the increase of Turkish investments in various fields in Egypt, offering more than 180,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
El-Lami told Asharq Al-Awsat that part of the cooperation mechanisms is related to the implementation of strategic partnerships in maritime transport through increasing the number of containers on shipping lines that connect the two countries and pass through the Suez Canal.
Also, cooperation between both countries is linked to enhancing agreements in several sectors at the governmental and private levels.
'Both countries need to work on removing remaining barriers to trade to further enhance economic cooperation,' he said.
During the visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Türkiye last September, the two countries signed several agreements to boost commercial ties and cooperate on several sectors.
'There are multiple areas of partnership in the field of maritime transportation between Egypt and Türkiye,' said Professor Mohammed Ali Ibrahim, Director of the School of Transportation and Logistics at the University of Istanbul.
Ibrahim told Asharq Al-Awsat that Egypt can gradually transform into a 'transit' for Turkish trade heading to the African market.
'This lines with the Egyptian plan to transform the country into a regional export hub,' he said.

US Envoy Expects Trump, Erdogan to Resolve Arms Sanctions on Türkiye this Year

The US ambassador to Türkiye said he expects Donald Trump and Tayyip Erdogan to resolve long-standing defense-related sanctions on Türkiye by year end, according to an interview with state owned Anadolu Agency. Thomas Barrack, the envoy, said the two presidents could give directions to settle the issue of sanctions, which the US imposed in 2020 over Türkiye's purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems. "In my view, President Trump and President Erdogan will tell Secretary (Marco) Rubio and Foreign Minister (Hakan) Fidan to fix this, find a way, and a resolution is possible by year-end," he was quoted as saying on Sunday. The CAATSA sanctions, referring to the 'Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act', also removed NATO member Türkiye from the F-35 program where it was both a buyer and manufacturer of the fighter jets. Ankara, which has closer US ties since Trump's return to the White House, has said its removal from the program was unjust and has demanded to be reinstated or reimbursed. "We all believe there's a tremendous opportunity here, as we have two leaders who trust each other," said Barrack, who is also special envoy to neighboring Syria.

Gold Rebounds From over One-month Low on Weaker Dollar

Gold reversed course and edged higher on Monday, supported by a weaker dollar, after hitting a more than one-month low earlier as easing US-China trade tensions dampened safe-haven demand and bolstered risk appetite. Spot gold edged up 0.1% to $3,277.62 per ounce, as of 0421 GMT, after hitting its lowest since May 29 earlier in the session. US gold futures were steady at $3,288.90. "There is less of a 'doom and gloom' outlook surrounding both tariff talks and events in the Middle East, which is relegating gold to play second fiddle to risk assets," KCM Trade Chief Market Analyst Tim Waterer said. Asian shares firmed, with Wall Street futures advancing, while the US dollar index fell 0.2%. A weaker dollar makes greenback-priced bullion less expensive. The US and China have resolved issues surrounding shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the US, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday, adding that the Trump administration's various trade deals with other countries could be done by the September 1 Labor Day holiday. Canada scrapped its digital services tax targeting US technology firms late on Sunday, just hours before it was due to take effect, in a bid to advance stalled trade negotiations with the United States. The Iran-Israel ceasefire after a 12-day conflict also appeared to be holding, further reducing safe-haven demand. "The dollar remains pressured, which is limiting the extent of the slide for gold. However, the $3,250 level shapes as a key support level for gold. Any breach of this level could see losses accelerate towards the $3,200 level," Waterer said. Stable geopolitical and economic conditions often reduce demand for gold as a safe-haven asset, while the non-yielding asset's appeal further wanes in a high-interest-rate environment. Spot silver rose 0.5% to $36.14 per ounce, platinum firmed 1.9% to $1,364.74, while palladium was up 1.5% at $1,150.50.

GCC praises Qatari, US efforts in Rwanda, DRC peace deal

LONDON: Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, praised Qatar and the US for their mediation efforts that led to the signing of the peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Albudaiwi hoped the agreement would reduce tensions and contribute to security and stability, fostering regional prosperity and international peace. Since 2021, fighting between armed groups has intensified in the mineral-rich eastern DRC, which has vast reserves of cobalt, coltan, lithium, tin and gold. The peace agreement between the two countries raises hopes for an end to the fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands of others, he said. Albudaiwi added that Qatar's role in driving the agreement shows a growing involvement of GCC countries in supporting peaceful solutions and promoting security and stability in various regions worldwide. The GCC is committed to diplomacy and dialogue to address crises and achieve sustainable development, he said.
