Pag-IBIG Fund helps 90,000 members gain homes with P130B in housing loans released in 2024

Filipino Times14-02-2025
More Filipino workers realized their dream of homeownership in 2024 as Pag-IBIG Fund released P129.73 billion in home loans to finance the purchase and construction of 90,616 homes for its members, officials announced Wednesday, Feb. 12.
'Pag-IBIG Fund has once again demonstrated its commitment to helping Filipino workers secure their own homes,' said Secretary Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar, head of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and chairperson of the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.
'Our achievements in home financing this past year underscore our unwavering pledge to make homeownership accessible and affordable for our members. As we gain momentum with the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (4PH) Program, we continue to heed President Marcos's directive to provide stronger social protection and improve the lives of more Filipinos.'
Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta emphasized that the agency's 2024 milestones included financing for socialized housing units, as well as P20.17 billion in approved development loans to support the construction of nearly 18,000 4PH housing units, thereby making homeownership even more attainable for low-income earners.
'In 2024, one in every 10 homes financed through Pag-IBIG was a socialized housing unit, helping 9,082 minimum-wage earners secure a home of their own,' Acosta said.
'We also approved funding for the construction of 17,791 4PH housing units, which will provide more Pag-IBIG members the opportunity to own a home. These are significant steps toward ensuring that Filipino workers, especially those with modest incomes, have access to decent and affordable housing.'
She reaffirmed the agency's commitment to ensuring that members have access to affordable home financing under the friendliest terms, thereby giving them greater opportunities to secure their own homes.
Through Pag-IBIG Fund's Housing Loan program, members can build their own homes, buy residential lots, purchase ready-to-occupy units, buy out existing home loans from banks, or acquire Pag-IBIG-acquired assets at discounted rates. They also have the option to buy brand-new homes under the 4PH Program, which offers subsidized interest rates.
'We are devoted to enabling every Filipino worker to save and achieve their dream of homeownership,' Acosta added. 'Our members can trust that we will continue to provide the benefits they deserve, so that more of our fellow Filipinos can build better lives for their families.'

LTO brings online license renewal to OFWs in Japan after Taiwan success

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has launched the second phase of its online driver's license renewal caravan for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), this time in Japan. LTO Acting Assistant Secretary Atty. Greg Pua Jr. said the initiative—coordinated with the Department of Migrant Workers, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of Labor and Employment—follows the successful rollout in Taiwan last year, where over 1,000 OFWs were assisted. Pua expects a similar turnout in Japan. The caravan includes information campaigns to help OFWs learn to use the online renewal platform. He also said the event serves as a live testing ground to resolve technical issues based on user feedback. To renew online, OFWs need a scanned copy of their expiring or recently expired license and a medical certificate from an LTO-accredited telemedical provider. A stable internet connection and smartphone are needed for the process, though Pua recommends using a tablet or laptop for telemedical exams. After payment, licenses will be printed and delivered to Japan via courier within three to five days. As part of the Bagong Pilipinas initiative, LTO plans to expand the program to OFWs in the Middle East, the U.S., and Europe.

Elcome launches offline VoD service for ship crews

The innovative system allows offline streaming to as many as 26 devices simultaneously via a local network, eliminating the need for costly satellite data usage during content playback. Maritime technology specialist Elcome International has unveiled a new Video on Demand (VoD) service designed to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant entertainment directly to ship crews’ personal devices, without affecting the vessel’s internet bandwidth. The new Elcome VoD service facilitates the simultaneous broadcasting of a diverse range of content across up to 26 separate devices via offline streaming, with no impact on the vessel’s Internet speed. The service is based on flexible subscription models, with monthly, quarterly, or annual options managed by the ship operator, rather than the crew. 'Until now, most crews could only watch a single TV channel at a time in the mess hall, often in a language foreign to their own,' said Elcome’s Senior Manager – Connectivity, Asneed Ameer. 'With Elcome VoD, seafarers can now unwind in their own cabin with a library of movies, TV series, podcasts, and news programmes in their preferred language with zero impact on ship’s satellite bandwidth or connectivity costs.' Unlike conventional streaming services that rely on costly satellite data, Elcome’s VoD system installs an onboard media server that pulls content updates overnight, on a daily and monthly schedule, during low-traffic windows. The continuously refreshed library streams entirely over the ship’s local network, meaning satellite Internet is used only during the scheduled update window. The platform is available with two subscription options. A basic package includes 160 movies and 189 hours of TV content, while a premium package offers 200 movies and over 830 hours of TV. The premium package also includes Euronews or ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol. 'Shipowners gain a cost-effective crew welfare enhancement that supports retention and morale, while crews get entertainment that respects their cultural and language preferences,' added Ameer. 'Access to daily news also helps crews feel informed, connected to home, and part of the wider world, something many seafarers feel they miss out on with a career at sea.' The content catalogue is curated for seafarers of all nationalities, with genre-rich selections and cultural bundles tailored to Indian, Filipino and multinational crews. The service is already being trialled aboard a number of vessels, including offshore support ships and merchant fleets. 'This isn’t a consumer app repurposed for ships. It’s a custom-designed solution built for life at sea. We are not only providing a better experience, but we are also protecting the shipboard bandwidth vital for business-critical communications.' According to Elcome, VoD pricing is competitive and comparable to the monthly costs equivalent to two consumer streaming subscriptions, but without the hidden data costs typical of online entertainment.

Marcos Heads to US for Talks With Trump on Trade, Security

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. departed for Washington, D.C. on Sunday for an official visit aimed at strengthening Philippine-US economic and defense relations. During his send-off speech at Villamor Air Base, Marcos highlighted his intent to negotiate a bilateral trade deal with the United States, signaling the Philippines' readiness for deeper collaboration. 'I intend to convey to President Trump and his cabinet officials that the Philippines is ready to negotiate a bilateral trade deal that will ensure strong, mutually beneficial, and future-oriented collaborations that only the United States and the Philippines will be able to take advantage of,' Marcos said. The three-day visit, which runs from July 20 to 22, will include meetings with US President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Marcos also emphasized that while the agenda will focus on defense and security, trade issues — especially the 20% tariff on Filipino goods — will be a key part of discussions. 'This visit reaffirms our commitment to fostering our long-standing alliances as an instrument of peace and a catalyst of development in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world,' he added. Several American businesses are also seeking to meet with the Philippine leader, according to Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano. Marcos is expected to invite Trump to attend the East Asia Summit, which the Philippines will host during its ASEAN chairmanship in 2026. Marcos is the first ASEAN head of state to make an official visit to the US under Trump's current term.
