Moroccan utility ONEE granted $340mln in loans for energy transition

Zawya23-05-2025
Moroccan water and power utility ONEE said it has been granted 300 million euros ($340 million) in loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and German state lender KfW to support integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
The financing package comprises 170 million euros from the EIB and 130 million euros from KfW, the utility said on Friday, adding that the money will be used to expand its electricity transmission network by 730km.
ONEE plans to invest $19 billion in its electricity development plan through 2030, the year Morocco will co-host the World Cup soccer tournament, together with Spain and Portugal.
The plan aims to increase installed renewable energy capacity to 56% of the country's total electricity capacity by 2027, three years ahead of the 2030 target.
Currently, installed renewable energy capacity stands at 45%, or 5.5GW.
ONEE said it will add 15GW of installed electricity capacity, including 12GW from renewable sources by 2030.
Last week ONEE signed a deal with the United Arab Emirates' TAQA to build a 1,400 km high-voltage transmission line with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts linking Western Sahara's renewable energy sites to central Morocco.
Coal still accounts for more than 70% of Morocco's energy production.
Seeking to diversify its coal-dependent energy sector, Morocco began in April a tendering process to build a liquefied natural gas terminal in the Mediterranean port of Nador.

Saudi's Mawani starts work on $184mln logistics corridor in Jeddah

Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has commenced work on the 689 million Saudi riyals ($183.71 million) logistics corridor connecting Jeddah Islamic Port to Al-Khumrah Logistics Park, located south of Jeddah. The project aims to establish a dedicated and direct logistics corridor, Mawani said in a statement. The 17km long corridor will have two lanes in each direction. A total of 12 bridges will be constructed along the route to facilitate the movement of trucks between the port and the logistics park, eliminating the need to use the city's internal road network. Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Mawani Chairman Saleh Al-Jasser said that the direct logistics corridor will significantly enhance truck movement efficiency and increase the handling capacity of Jeddah Islamic Port by 10 percent. The project will also include emergency access points, maintenance facilities, and a complete rainwater drainage system. Jeddah Islamic Port, located on the Red Sea coast, spans 12.5 sq km and includes 62 multi-purpose berths and a number of specialised terminals. The project's completion date was not given. Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) Secures €250M for Lobito Corridor as Rail Projects Drive African Mining Boom

Africa's railway sector is undergoing a renaissance, with strategic transport corridors rapidly expanding to unlock the continent's mineral wealth and strengthen global trade ties. In June, the Africa Finance Corporation secured a €250 million ( 10-year loan from Italian development finance institution Cassa Depositi e Prestiti to accelerate the development of the Lobito Corridor – an essential mineral transport network linking Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to global markets. The loan will finance the procurement of goods and services from Italian companies for both the corridor and associated renewable energy projects. The Lobito Corridor is among several strategic projects that will feature prominently at African Mining Week (AMW), taking place October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town. AMW will showcase high-impact investment opportunities across Africa's mining and infrastructure value chains, with a focus on how rail logistics are transforming landlocked mineral-rich regions into competitive, export-oriented hubs. Simandou Rail Hits Construction Milestone In West Africa, Guinea-Conakry marked a key milestone in June with the completion of a 903-meter tunnel on the 650-km Simandou Railway ( Once operational by early 2026, the line will transport up to 120 million tons of high-grade iron ore annually from the Simandou deposit — home to an estimated 2 billion tons of reserves. U.S. company Wabtec ( was awarded a $248 million contract in February to supply locomotives for the project. At AMW 2025, a high-level panel, 'From Mines to Markets: Strengthening Trade and Connectivity for Africa's Mineral Future ( will explore how megaprojects like Simandou are strengthening Africa's mineral value chain. Mauritania Advances Iron Ore Rail Expansion Mauritania has also made strides in rail development, securing a €113 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) ( in June to co-finance the expansion of a key iron ore railway between Zouérat and Nouadhibou. The project – backed by a total €461 million investment involving national mining company SNIM, EIB and private investors – will optimize exports of Mauritania's iron ore to international markets. AMW 2025 will provide a platform for global investors to engage with opportunities emerging in Mauritania and similar markets. Cameroon Strengthens Bauxite Logistics In Central Africa, Australia's Canyon Resources acquired a 9.1% stake in Cameroon's national rail operator, Camrail ( to bolster logistics for the Minim Martap Bauxite Mine ( The acquisition – from TotalEnergies and Société d'Exploitation des Bois du Cameroun – aims to enhance rail access from the mine to port infrastructure, facilitating the export of up to 6.4 million tons of bauxite annually. AMW will feature investment-ready opportunities tied to bauxite and other critical minerals ( driving the energy transition. China Deepens Rail Footprint in Africa In East Africa, the China Railway Engineering Group signed a $2.15 billion agreement in February with Tanzania and Burundi ( to build a 282-km cross-border railway. The line is expected to support the export of up to 3 million tons of minerals annually, improving regional and global market access. In Nigeria, the China Development Bank ( provided a $254.76 million grant in January to finance the Kano-Kaduna rail line – a vital link between the Lagos-Ibadan and Kano-Maradi corridors. This project will enhance mineral and energy transportation across West Africa. At AMW 2025, the China-Africa Cooperation on Minerals Roundtable ( will convene public and private sector leaders to strengthen bilateral ties, while the Invest in Nigeria Infrastructure session ( will further spotlight opportunities like the Kano-Kaduna rail project as cornerstones of Nigeria's mining and logistics growth. Oman's OPAZ invites bids for phase one of Al Rawdah water drainage project

Muscat – The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) announced the launch of a tender for the construction works of surface water drainage channels in the Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone. OPAZ has invited specialised companies to purchase tender documents and submit bids via the e-tendering platform 'Etimad', for the project to be implemented in the wilayat of Mahdah in Buraimi governorate. The tender coincides with the Ministry of Finance's signing of an agreement with the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) to fund the first phase of the surface water drainage project in Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone. Yahya bin Khamis al Zadjali, planning advisor to the Chairman of OPAZ, stated that the project aims to provide essential protection for the zone, including safeguarding tourism, industrial, commercial, and agricultural facilities. The project will implement an integrated network of open channels and effective water barriers to control the flow of surface water resulting from rainfall across the lands designated for the SEZ. The tender includes the construction of an 850m barrier, a 25km long rainwater drainage channel, and associated excavation, backfilling, grading, and other works necessary to support the zone's economic and social goals, Zadjali added. The drainage network will be precise enough to withstand exceptional weather conditions. Strategically located in the wilayat of Mahdah, Al Rawdah SEZ serves as a key logistics gateway between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The zone is connected to Suhar and Jebel Ali ports, enabling logistics providers, manufacturers, and commercial businesses to access GCC, Asian and African markets efficiently and cost-effectively. In May, OPAZ signed an agreement with Mahdah Development Company to develop and operate the first phase of the SEZ over an area of 14sqkm. The total planned area of the zone is approximately 56.8sqkm. The first phase focuses on attracting investment in a range of sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, pharmaceuticals, plastics, mining, food industries, and safety and security services. Through the development of Al Rawdah SEZ, OPAZ aims to capitalise on the comparative and competitive advantages of Oman's various governorates, thereby contributing to economic and social development, creating employment opportunities for Omani youth, and stimulating key economic sectors. The establishment of the SEZ aligns with the authority's broader strategy to support Oman Vision 2040, particularly in the areas of economic diversification, fiscal sustainability, labour market development, private sector growth, foreign investment, international cooperation, and sustainable urban and regional development. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
