Ramsey joins Mexico's Pumas UNAM after Cardiff City exit
MEXICO CITY - Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has joined Mexican side Pumas UNAM as a free agent, following a two-year stint at his boyhood club Cardiff City, the Liga MX team announced on Thursday.
The former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder signed a one-year contract with Pumas after briefly stepping in as Cardiff interim manager before the club's relegation to League One in April.
"I'm very excited, at a good point in my career to move forward. I know what the expectations are for this club and I'm here to do my part and help in any way I can," the 34-year-old Ramsey said at his presentation.
"I'm excited about this new challenge and surrounded by good players."
Ramsey, who shares an agent with Pumas head coach Efrain Juarez, has made it clear he wants to continue competing at the top level and is eyeing a leading role with Wales at the 2026 World Cup.
"I have had a lot of experience in my career and that obviously puts me in a good position," Ramsey added.
"I want to contribute in my role and achieve the objectives we have set for this season. There are things to be excited about and I am looking forward to this challenge."
Pumas will play a friendly match against Spanish side Leganes on Sunday before kicking off their Apertura campaign on July 12 when they visit Santos Laguna.
Ramsey is also expected to feature in the team's upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign. REUTERS

Former New Zealand sevens speedster Rayasi to make Fiji debut v Australia
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MELBOURNE - Former New Zealand rugby sevens player Salesi Rayasi will follow in his father's footsteps by representing Fiji at test level when he starts at fullback in Sunday's clash against Australia in Newcastle. France-based Rayasi is one of two uncapped players in Mick Byrne's match-day squad, with Fijian Drua scrumhalf Philip Baselala hoping to debut from the bench. Rayasi, who made 50 appearances for the Wellington Hurricanes in Super Rugby before moving to RC Vannes last year, was a member of New Zealand's sevens squads between 2018-20. He switched nationality to Fiji to honour his heritage, with his father Filipe Rayasi capped 13 times for the Pacific island nation, mostly at fullback. "He's pretty excited, obviously," Australian Byrne told reporters in Newcastle on Friday of Rayasi Jnr. "Very accomplished player, very skilful. I like the way he's been training. He works very hard off the field as well, understanding his role. "That's been very pleasing so I'm looking forward to him being able to go out there on Sunday and show everybody his worthiness of a white jersey." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Pirlo's former club Brescia out of Serie C after failing to secure licence
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Andrea Pirlo's hometown club Brescia, which featured some of the greats of the game such as Roberto Baggio, Gheorghe Hagi and Pep Guardiola, have been thrown out of Serie C after their license was revoked for failing to meet legal and financial criteria. The club was relegated to the third tier of Italian football after being docked eight points by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in May for a series of financial violations. The club's president Massimo Cellino, formerly in charge of English side Leeds United, and managing director Edoardo Cellino were handed six-month bans by an FIGC tribunal. "At the conclusion of which the Commission found that the 'legal and economic-financial criteria' for obtaining the National License for the purpose of admission to the 2025-2026 Serie C Championship ... were not met," the FIGC said in a media release on Thursday. Brescia was therefore not granted a licence for next season and would not be admitted to Serie C, it added. The FIGC also said Brescia had failed to pay a 1.1 million euros ($1.30 million) debt to Serie B as of January 31 and also had unpaid debts to players and coaching staff. REUTERS
