Cronenworth's walk-off single in the 10th lifts the Padres to a 3-2 win over the Rangers
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth singled to right field with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday.
Cronenworth's single off Robert Garcia (1-4) brought in automatic runner Jackson Merrill. Cronenworth raised his right index finger as he rounded first base and was mobbed by teammates near second after his fifth career walk-off hit.
Manny Machado was intentionally walked to open the inning and Luis Arraez struck out. Gavin Sheets singled to center to load the bases. Xander Bogaerts injured himself swinging at the first pitch of his at-bat, was checked by an athletic trainer and left the game. Bryce Johnson replaced him and struck out.
The Rangers went to extra innings for the sixth time in nine games, losing four of them.
Machado had two hits to reach 1,997 in his career, including a 440-foot solo home run to straightaway center field in the fourth to pull the Padres to 2-1. Machado, elected the National League's starting third baseman for the All-Star Game, has 356 career homers.
The Rangers jumped on Randy Vasquez with two outs in the third. Josh Smith walked and Corey Seager singled, with both scoring when Marcus Semien doubled to right-center over Fernando Tatis Jr.'s outstretched glove.
After Machado's homer pulled the Padres within one, they tied it in the sixth, getting just one run despite loading the bases with one out.
Tatis opened with a triple that ticked off the glove of right fielder Adolis Garcia. Machado's one-out walk chased starter Kumar Rocker, and Arraez greeted Hoby Milner with an RBI single. Sheets singled to load the bases before Milner struck out Bogaerts and Cronenworth.
Adrian Morejon (5-3) got the win. Key moment
Cronenworth's single ended it after 3 hours, 8 minutes. Key stat
Machado can become the 12th player to reach 350 homers and 2,000 hits at age 32 or younger. Up next

'Significant signing' or 'very underwhelming'?
We asked for your views on the signing of midfielder Thelo Aasgaard after he completed a deal to join Rangers from Luton Town. Here's what some of you had to say: Hector: Yet another signing from a team relegated to the lower divisions in England. This is patronising to the Scottish Premiership and the club's fanbase, and is obviously sub-standard for European competition at any level. Advertisement Gary: Great bit of business - stood out a mile when I have watched him play. Still young and only going to get better and I think he has a big future in the game. Bob: Brilliant signing, looking forward to seeing him score lots of goals. Wes: Super excited about this signing! He is so creative and has goals in his locker also. Scored on his international debut earlier this year for his country, and I can see him being a permanent fixture from now on. Only going to get better and better, mark my words! David: Very underwhelming signing, much the same feelings as when new manager was unveiled. Please overachieve, we need players who can walk into this team. Advertisement Brian: This is another significant signing and the indications are there's more to come. I sense Russell Martin is building a team for an eventful and hopefully successful season - Aasgaard is a real talent and we should be getting excited at seeing how quickly these new players gel to create a winning team. My only concern is the goalkeeper situation - a weak link in all this activity.

Michigan Defense Preview 2025: Another Year, Another Dominant Wolverines D
The defense did its wasn't the killer the 2024 national championship version was, but with zero help whatsoever from the offensive side, it finished tenth in the nation, was fifth against the run, stuffed Ohio State and Alabama, and now it should do it all over might not be a ton of ready-made superstars, but there's a good mix of top-shelf veterans, talented young backups, and good transfers to create another problem for Big Ten attacks. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 Michigan PreviewMichigan Offense Breakdown Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season - The pass rush was good enough. It comes up large when it has to, but like the 2024 version, it wasn't among the elite. However, that's a bit by design - the Wolverines don't go full bore all the time to attack the backfield. Even so, this bunch will get there. The outside guys are set. Derrick Moore is a true hybrid at one outside linebacker spot, making four sacks and six tackles for loss, and TJ Guy is ready to roll again on the other side with 5.5 sacks with seven tackles for loss. Once again, on the inside is Ernest Hausmann, a former Nebraska starter who led the Wolverines with 89 tackles in the middle. Jaishawn Barham was second with 66 stops and five quarterback hurries. Getting Troy Bowles (Georgia) was a strong signing to add to an already loaded depth situation. - The interior of the line can get into the backfield, too. The rotation will be strong, starting with veteran 296-pound Rayshaun Benny as a big presence on the Williams (Clemson) only made 35 tackles in five years with the Tigers, but his role will be to hold up on the nose. 315-pound Tre Pierce is another big body who'll anchor things from time to time. Damon Payne (Alabama) is a 303-pound veteran who can play anywhere inside. - Good last year, the Wolverine corners should go up a few notches. Not having Will Johnson around doesn't help, but he missed a chunk of the year hurt, Hill went through the growing pains of a freshman season, but he'll be an All-Big Ten playmaker on one side. Zeke Berry can work just about anywhere, leading the team with nine broken up passes with 37 stops, and sixth-year veteran Caleb Anderson (Louisiana) will fill in wherever needed. Rod Moore might be one of the Big Ten's best safeties, if he's all back full from a torn ACL before last season started. Even if he's not his former self right away, the talent is there to once again be a force as the year goes Metcalf (Arkansas) is an all-around baller who made 57 tackles with three picks and seven broken-up passes last year for the Hogs. Brandyn Hillman can start in any spot - he should double up his 21 tackles from last season - and back after missing almost all of last year, former Michigan State transfer Jaden Mangham should be back to the 53-tackle, four-pick 2023 level he was at in East Lansing. Ponce has two late goals to deliver the Dynamos a 4-3 win over leading San Diego FC
Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ezequiel Ponce scored his second goal 10 minutes into extra time and the Houston Dynamo defeated San Diego FC 4-3 on Saturday night. Ethan Barlow gave Ponce a short middle feed to the top of the box and he used his left foot to deliver a roller to the far corner for the win, just the second home loss of the season for San Diego. Ponce tied the game from the spot in the 87th and then 17 minutes were added at the end of regulation. Anders Dreyer's shot deflected off the leg of teammate Onni Valakari in the 67th minute to give Western Conference leading San Diego a 3-2 lead. Just four minutes later an offside call negated Ponce's tying goal but Ponce got a second chance on the penalty. Milan Iloski of Houston (7-9-5) opened the scoring 25 minutes in and Luca Bombino pulled the Dynamo into a 2-2 tie in the 54th minute. San Diego (12-6-3), which had won four straight, took a 2-1 lead into halftime on goals by Lawrence Ennali and Franco Escobar. Valakari had assists on both goals. Houston has won two straight after losing three straight and moved from 10th into a four-way tie for eighth in the Western Conference. ___ AP soccer: recommended
