Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: OceanQuest, a Saudi Arabian not-for-profit foundation, announced its official launch today in Jeddah. Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, OceanQuest is poised to usher in a new era of deep-ocean discovery and collaboration.
OceanQuest is on a mission to accelerate ocean discovery, drive innovation, and foster international cooperation while engaging the public. By cultivating partnerships that advance multidisciplinary ocean research, the foundation aims to benefit humanity, enhance ocean literacy, and elevate public awareness.
OceanQuest Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan stated, "As a nation rooted in progress and innovation, we are committed to unlocking the mysteries of the deep ocean for the benefit of humanity. This initiative exemplifies our Kingdom's ambition to lead in science and discovery, foster global collaboration, and create opportunities for future generations. Through this collective effort, OceanQuest will drive solutions to some of the most pressing challenges of our time."
OceanQuest will support Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 ambitions by spearheading innovation in ocean exploration, nurturing global partnerships, and advancing sustainable development. The foundation is set to contribute to the Kingdom's national research, development, and innovation (RDI) targets by providing SAR3 billion in research and development funding by 2050 and supporting more than 150 scientists annually.
In addition, OceanQuest will help achieve the Kingdom's goal of protecting 30% of its marine habitats by bolstering the biotech and pharmaceuticals strategy, identifying sensitive marine ecosystems, enabling sustainable projects along the Red Sea, and leveraging deep-sea corals as natural carbon sinks to support Saudi Arabia's decarbonization efforts.
The Board of Trustees of the foundation consists of: Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan (Chairman of the Board), Advisor to the Royal Court Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Toonsi, Governor of the Public Investment Fund Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Advisor to the Royal Court Abdulaziz bin Ismail Tarabzoni, CEO of NEOM Aiman Al-Mudaifer, CEO of Red Sea Global John Pagano, President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Prof. Edward Byrne, and Raymond Thomas Dalio.
Based at KAUST campus in Thuwal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, OceanQuest is committed to unveiling the wonders of the ocean and exploring its secrets for the benefit of humanity. To support tech entrepreneurship and deep technology adoption, the Saudi representatives held talks with leaders from Catapult, a UK organisation focused on scaling innovative businesses. Discussions centred around potential partnerships to help foster startup ecosystems and facilitate the integration of cutting-edge technologies across sectors. The delegation also engaged with executives from OneWeb, a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite company, to explore joint initiatives for high-speed connectivity solutions. Conversations focused on deploying advanced communications infrastructure across key sectors such as transport, energy, industry and education, aiming to bolster innovation and support the Kingdom’s growing space and satellite ecosystem. This visit is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to localise future technologies, strengthen global partnerships, and position itself as a major center for innovation, in line with the ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030.

Jeddah is set to host International Beauty Expo 2025, the leading international trade show that redefines the landscape of the beauty and wellness industry, from September 9-11, 2025, at the Jeddah Superdome. According to the organizers, Saudi Arabia's rapid population growth, the fastest among the GCC countries, and in addition the National Transformation Program (NTP) under Vision 2030, which aims to promote economic diversification, empower women, and create a growing consumer base with rising incomes, are factors that prompted the exhibition to be held in Jeddah. The exhibition organizers also explained that their vision is to enhance the leadership of the beauty and perfume industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and highlight the revival and growth of the Saudi market in this field, especially since the Kingdom has the highest per capita spending on beauty and perfumes in the Middle East. In a span of three days, the show will focus on the four cornerstones of the beauty industry: cosmetics & fragrance, spa & aesthetics, natural products and hair care & nails. From top local and international beauty brands to industry experts, from international beauty associations to local retailers and developers, and from hotels and health and wellness institutions to local institutions and regulatory bodies, some of the finest in the business are all set to descend in Jeddah. According to preliminary statistics, the number of visitors to the exhibition is expected to exceed ten thousand people, including buyers and traders interested in this industry, trade associations and government agencies, in addition to hotel and spa operating companies, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers of perfumes, aromatic oils, oud and incense, in addition to beauty and hair professionals, importers, exporters and distributors.

Image: Getty Images Saudi Arabia's international reputation has seen a measurable improvement, according to the Key findings reveal sustained reputational gains In 2024, positive media coverage of Saudi Arabia increased by 25 per cent compared to 2023, while negative coverage declined by 55 per cent since 2020. These shifts signal a long-term transformation in how the Kingdom is perceived internationally. CARMA's multi-market public survey, which gathered insights from the UK, USA, India, Singapore, and Russia, found that 59 per cent of respondents expressed a favourable view of Saudi Arabia. Among these, 37 per cent said their perception had become more positive in the past 12 months. Vision 2030 leads the narrative The Vision 2030 agenda has become central to international discussions about Saudi Arabia, accounting for 60 per cent of global media coverage—the highest share recorded to date. Notably, coverage of Saudi Arabia's social and economic transformation now exceeds the volume of political discourse for the first time since 2020. Tourism, entertainment, and major events fuel attention Coverage related to the Kingdom's economy rose by 77 per cent in 2024, supported by events such as the Future Investment Initiative, the LEAP tech conference, and the World Defence Show. Tourism and entertainment coverage grew by 60 per cent year-on-year, reflecting the country's efforts to position itself as a global destination. While coverage of sports fell by 7 per cent, it still made up 11 per cent of total global media volume, driven by events like Saudi Arabia's confirmed bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Influencers and leadership shaping perceptions Influential global personalities such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, MrBeast, and Elon Musk contributed to increased engagement with Saudi Arabia's growing entertainment and cultural presence through high-profile social media posts. CARMA also noted that Saudi leadership was frequently represented in international media as drivers of reform, mega-project development, and regional diplomacy. Survey results reflect this shift in perception: 59 per cent of respondents expressed interest in visiting Saudi Arabia, 60 per cent were open to doing business in the Kingdom, and 52 per cent said they would consider working there.
