Keir Starmer confronted over DWP disability cuts as Labour MP says she was 'ashamed'
Keir Starmer was confronted by a senior Labour MP, who said the Government's plans to slash disability benefits left her "ashamed".
In a tense exchange, Work and Pensions Committee chair Debbie Abrahams said the original plans were 'far removed' from traditional Labour values of fairness and social justice, as well as compassion and common decency'.
And she pressed the PM on what he would like to say to the disabled people plunged into "fear and anxiety" before the Government watered down its plans.
Ms Abrahams was among the Labour rebels who forced a climbdown on the legislation, which meant proposed cuts to Personal Independence Payments (PIP) were shelved until next year.
The clash came as Mr Starmer was grilled by the Commons Liaison Committee ahead of the summer recess - with child poverty and international affairs topping the agenda.
Ms Abrahams told the PM: "This was poor legislation. It was designed to save money for the Treasury by cutting support to sick and disabled people.
"It was so far removed from Labour values of fairness and social justice, let alone compassion and common decency, I have to say I felt ashamed."
Asked what values would drive the Government's reforms, Mr Starmer replied: "I think this is a really important Labour value.
"I think the fact that nearly 1 million young people are out of work, not earning or learning, is a huge challenge for our country. None of us should be accepting of a system like that, it is broken and needs to be mended."
He added: "We do need to reform the system and we should take that on as a Labour argument in my view."
Ms Abrahams replied: "Everybody agrees that reform needs to happen. It is a broken system... reform does not mean cuts to household incomes for already struggling households.
"We must do better Prime Minister. You mentioned about reducing poverty. This has the potential of actually increasing it."
Earlier, the PM told MPs that "tackling poverty and breaking down barriers" was at the heart of his agenda.
He said: "I want people to feel better off and there has to be a central focus on living standards. I want them to feel - as they will - that the health service is working much better, is there for them and their families in a way that it hasn't been for many years.
"And I want them to feel safe and secure, both in their immediate neighbourhood and as a country, both our borders and national security and defence. So, they're the three things that I'm focused on more than anything else."
Mr Starmer also restated his commitment to driving down child poverty levels. He said: "I'm very proud of the fact that the last Labour government drove down poverty, and I'm determined this Government is going to as well."

Monmouthshire County Council 'key decisions' not published
Monmouthshire County Council agreed a change to its constitution in April that 'key decisions' made by council officers be published on the authority's website. The intention is doing so would allow councillors outside of the Labour-led cabinet to call them in for review if necessary. But Conservative member for Shirenewton, Cllr Louise Brown, questioned if that has happened. She told the full council's July meeting: 'I haven't seen any key decisions published. There must be some?'. She asked how the council will ensure the decisions are published and Labour cabinet member Councillor Angela Sandles said the decisions have to be published on the council website within two days of them being taken and they can't be implemented for five days to allow them to be called in. But the Magor East and Undy councillor said she didn't know the answer as to why seemingly no decisions have been published and said she would get back to Cllr Brown. Cllr Sandles, also in response to Cllr Brown, confirmed the council is working to 'improve' its forward planner. There has been repeated criticism over some decisions not being included on the planner and Cllr Sandles said the intention is to mark which have already been listed to go before a scrutiny committee so councillors and committee chairs can also see which others they may want to discuss.

Jeremy Corbyn's new left-wing party gets off to flying start with confusion over what it's even called as co-leader asks people to join 'Your Party'
The launch of Jeremy Corbyn 's new political party descended into farce today as his putative co-leader denied they had even chosen a new name for it. Zarah Sultana, the former Labour MP who quit to link up with the septuagenarian leftwinger, today invited people to join them using a link sending them to a website called 'Your Party'. The website claims it is time for 'a new kind of political party - one that belongs to you.' However there was confusing over what it was even called, following the announcement. After it was picked up by media Ms Sultana, 31, was forced to take to social media to say 'Your Party' was not its name. However Mr Corbyn's team told reporters it was an interim working title but will not be that which is registered with the Electoral Commission. Her former Labour colleague Mike Tapp responded to her message with just a laughter emoji. An inaugural conference will take place for members to 'decide the party's direction, the model of leadership and the policies that are needed to transform society.' As they gear up to form and potentially head a new socialist body some 18 per cent of Britons say they could back it. Earlier this month Mr Corbyn, 76, said there was a 'thirst' among voters 'for an alternative view to be put' forward. And one of his allies, Zarah Sultana, quit Labour saying she would co-leader a new party with him. A poll by YouGov shows that more than half of people who voted Green in the general election last year would consider backing a new Corbyn party. And in a sign of discontent with Labour under Sir Keir Starmer, almost a third (30 per cent) of those who backed the party last year would now think about backing his predecessor.

Donald Trump savaged by South Park after creators' land £1.19bn deal with Paramount
US President Donald Trump was savaged on the premiere episode of South Park's latest series after the show's creator landed a £1.19bn ($1.5bn) deal with Paramount US President Donald Trump was depicted sleeping with Satan in the season premiere of South Park after the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, signed a £1.19bn ($1.5 billion) deal with Paramount. The long-running series aired on July 23 after a two-year hiatus and referenced the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, POTUS' lawsuit against Paramount and Government censorship. During the premiere episode, called Sermon on the Mount, convicted felon Trump was shown in bed with series regular character, Satan. The devil comments on the small size of his penis before comforting him over rumours that his name is on the 'Epstein List'. The episode had Cartman lash out after he found out his favourite show NPR (National Public Radio) was cancelled, before he was told that Trump was the one who cancelled it. Cartman yells out: "The government can't cancel the show, I mean, what show are they going to cancel next?" He soon wears a T-shirt with the words, 'Woke is dead', emblazoned on it. While South Park residents come together when the school principal brings Jesus to an assembly, Trump is seen in the White House being criticised for rising tariffs in Canada. He tells his opponents to "relax" and later decorates the White House with nude portraits of himself. However, instead of being animated in classic South Park style, the creators used photos of Trump's face on an animated body. And when South Park supporters turn on him, he sues the residents for $5 billion (£3.9 billion). Jesus begs the people of South Park to stop rioting against the president and settle the lawsuit. They negotiated the lawsuit to $3.5billion (around £3 billion) but have to produce "pro-Trump messaging" in their public service announcements, as per the settlement deal. The premiere episode then concludes with a number of x-rated deepfake advertisements of a naked Trump crawling his way through a desert. It comes after South Park's creator landed a $1.5 billion deal with Paramount, with them producing a run of 50 new episodes over five years. Meanwhile Paramount and CBS recently shocked fans when they announced the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's talk show, with many questioning the reason behind it. Trump shared his delight over the cancellation, posting: "I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! "Greg Gutfield is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show." In a segment on Stephen's show, the host read out Trump's tweet while doing an impression of the President's voice. The audience booed the tweet before Stephen confidently said: "How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?" before turning to a different camera and adding: "Go f**k yourself!"
