
U of S synchrotron testing next-gen EV batteries that could go 25x longer before replacement
Electric vehicle manufacturers are using the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron in Saskatoon to develop batteries with a lifespan pushing eight million kilometres, roughly 25 times the average life of batteries currently in use.
Researchers used the ultra bright synchrotron light at the CLS particle accelerator at the University of Saskatchewan to take a microscopic look at the inner workings of a regular lithium-ion battery and the new "single-crystal electrode" battery. Tesla Canada co-funded the research.
When they peered inside, the researchers saw the single-crystal electrode battery resisted the microscopic cracking caused by repeated charging cycles. This cracking degrades the ability of regular EV batteries to hold a charge.
Prior to testing, the single-crystal electrode battery analyzed at the CLS was continuously charged and depleted in a lab, said Toby Bond, a senior scientist at CLS who conducted the research with Dalhousie University professor Jeff Dahn.
"We charged it and discharged it 24/7 for about six years," Bond said in an interview with CBC News. "We brought it here and scanned it and we saw absolutely no signs of degradation. So this is after 20,000 charge discharge cycles, which is the equivalent of driving about eight million kilometres."
The main difference between the two batteries is in the electrodes. On a standard battery, the electrodes are made of particles 50 times smaller than the width of a hair, which in turn are made of even tinier crystals. The new battery is just one big crystal, meaning it's a more solid structure that is resistant to mechanical stress.

Scientist Toby Bond says a new type of lithium-ion battery material called a single-crystal electrode can last decades, and be used in 'second-life applications' such as storing wind and solar energy for the electrical grid.
This is the first time scientists have analyzed a single-crystal electrode battery that was continuously cycled for so long, Bond said.
"What we do is take CT scans, which are kind of like a 3D X-ray you might get in the hospital," Bond said. "We can do that on a microscopic level with a battery without taking it apart.… We can actually look at features that are much smaller than human hair inside the battery without even disassembling it."
EV manufacturers are keen on developing batteries with longer life. Current standard batteries last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, or 160,000 to 320,000 kilometres, before replacement.
Bond said the new type of battery could outlive most other parts of an electric vehicle and that fewer battery replacements means reducing the carbon footprint of a vehicle. There is also potential for secondary uses, such as grid storage for wind and solar power.
Bond said these new batteries are already in commercial production and he expects they'll be used more often in the next few years.

Who decides when a damaged EV is safe to travel on B.C. Ferries?
Electric vehicle owners, technicians and experts in the EV field have been left scratching their heads over a new B.C. Ferries policy that potentially leaves thousands of the vehicles stranded at the dock on the Gulf Islands or the Sunshine Coast. B.C. Ferries recently refused to let a tow truck carrying a damaged EV board a vessel, citing the risk of combustion in damaged lithium-ion batteries, though the vehicle involved hadn't been in an accident. 'It's going to make people paranoid,' said Squamish EV owner Bob Porter. 'If I lived on Pender Island, or any island that I have to get off by ferry, I can see people would be concerned about, 'What happens to my car if it needs to be repaired?' Ferries' perspective, it's about safety and shoring up its policies to abide by federal regulations related to the transportation of hazardous goods that state that the 'transport of non-operational electric vehicles is currently not permitted,' according to an emailed statement from Ferries spokeswoman Sonia Lowe. 'We are talking about EVs with significant damage, such as any damage or open exposure of the battery pack,' Lowe wrote. However, the apparent blanket application of the policy so far has left EV owners wondering: Who determines if their vehicles are safe for towing, given the multitude of other things that can go wrong besides damage to a battery? 'Anything on a regular car that wears out, can wear out on an EV,' said Scott Waddle, owner of Precision Auto Service in Langley. That can include heating or cooling systems, other accessories and the technology systems in the more advanced vehicles. At the seven-to-10-year mark, suspension problems aren't uncommon. Waddle said only a small group of people in B.C. are qualified to determine if a damaged EV is safe. If a tow truck shows up at a ferry terminal with a damaged EV, leaving the decision in the hands of tow operators or B.C. Ferries staff doesn't seem reasonable. He added there are EV repair shops on Vancouver Island, but the challenge is on the Gulf Islands, where there is a high percentage of EV drivers. At the end of 2024, ICBC statistics counted more than 2,000 EVs and battery hybrids on the Gulf and other ferry-dependent islands. If you include ferry-linked Sunshine Coast communities, it's over 4,000 EVs. Waddle said it's possible, but costly, to use a barge to transport damaged EVs. An owner seeking repairs for a car that won't start faces a large bill just to get the car to a mechanic, while a car damaged in a collision might be written off as a total loss by ICBC as the cost to repair it goes up by several thousand dollars. 'It's a tough position to be in if you live on a Gulf Island,' he said. Asked whose responsibility it is to find a solution, Waddle said: 'It might be part of the price you pay for living on the Gulf Islands. I don't think it's the public's responsibility to pay for it.' Applying the prohibition as a blanket policy, however, won't be sustainable, according to Ken Hendricks, senior industry relations adviser for the Automotive Retailers Association. 'It's always been the case that the captain of a vessel can refuse someone to board due to safety reasons, and we have encountered this before,' Hendricks said. 'So this is not new, but there was no official public policy until this last development.' Hendricks reckons B.C. Ferries' policy can't outright bar EV owners from transporting vehicles off islands or to other communities where repair facilities exist. And ICBC has to be able to transport totalled EVs that need to be scrapped. Lowe, however, said the corporation needs to adopt 'a cautious approach' when they're dealing with high-voltage batteries that can't be assessed under their own power. 'As this area evolves and we gather additional data we will look at whether safe, regulatory compliant options to transport inoperable EVs can be introduced in the future,' Lowe said. For now, she said, electric or hybrid vehicles that are 'defective, inoperable or damaged and not being driven under their own power' are prohibited, while vehicles with cosmetic damage that hasn't impacted the battery system wiring or battery pack are generally acceptable. 'If a crew member is uncertain they can seek clarification from the Master (Captain) who has final decision-making authority.' The risk with EV batteries is combustion in what is termed thermal runaway, a situation where temperatures inside a damaged battery's cells spike causing an intense, chemical-reaction fire that burns at extremely high temperatures that is extremely difficult to extinguish. Porter, however, argued that the risk of thermal runaway decreases sharply 48 hours after damage occurs. And there are other ways of making batteries safe in cases where cars haven't been damaged, such as pulling out a vehicle's main breaker or mandating that they can only be towed when the battery has a low level of charge, which reduces the potential for thermal runaway. Mubasher Faruki, associate dean of automotive at BCIT, said B.C. Ferries' step recently 'sort of came out of the blue,' but was an understandable first step in establishing a policy related to the safe handling of EV batteries, but they aren't alone in trying to get on top of the issue. 'What I'm experiencing, what I'm seeing in this industry right now, policy-makers are definitely caught flat-footed or playing catch-up with trying to design regulations and policy around EVs,' Faruki said. 'This is where education and training comes into place. Because someone needs to be qualified to make that decision to determining whether a risk exists, and that's the part I'm not sure was really clearly outlined to the public.' Even if negotiations succeed in reducing those levies, the unpredictability of the current U.S. administration eliminates any chance of certainty, inhibiting long-term planning and investment strategies. Add in the failure of the EV revolution to attain the heights enthusiasts forecast for it and the future looks like one long, bumpy ride into doubt. Article content So there is a more-than-reasonable case to be made for Carney to water down the EV mandate while he's still in the business of ordering retreats. But there's an obvious political risk involved, and one he can't be keen to encourage. One retreat feeds another, and Canada's history of corporate subsidies and regulatory breaks means there's a long list of supplicants likely to view concessions to the auto giants as a signal to get out their begging bowls and head to Ottawa for similar treatment.
