Germany beats France on penalties to reach Euro 2025 semifinals despite early red card
A drama-filled match finished 1-1 on Saturday, then Germany won the shootout 6-5 thanks to the heroics of Ann-Katrin Berger, who saved two shots as well as dispatching her own spot kick.
There were tears of joy from the Germany players after perhaps one of the greatest examples in soccer history of digging deep to defy the odds.
"Everyone was in each other's arms," Germany coach Christian Wück said. "Everyone was celebrating; everyone was happy that this hard-fought performance led us to victory.
"I can only say it again and again: I'm so proud of the team for the way they took on this challenge against an opponent who demanded everything from us. That was incredible."
Germany, which is bidding for a record-extending ninth European Championship title, will face World Cup winner Spain in Zurich on Wednesday.
Early drama over hair-pulling
That seemed improbable after less than 13 minutes when Germany midfielder Kathrin Hendrich pulled the hair of France captain Griedge Mbock and issued a straight red card.
Grace Geyoro converted the resulting penalty but Sjoeke Nüsken headed her team level just 10 minutes later.
Despite being at a numerical disadvantage, Germany could have taken the lead with a penalty of its own in the second half but France goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin saved Nüsken's spot kick.
Nüsken scored Germany's last spot kick in the shootout.

For a symbol meant to promote tolerance and inclusion, rainbow coloured captain's armbands at the Women's European Championship are actually proving to be more divisive, with some captains wearing them, and others preferring not to. The rainbow armband are a symbol of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. UEFA, the governing body of European football, has given all captains at the Women's Euros the option of choosing which armband they want to wear during games: there are standard yellow and blue armbands with the word 'respect' emblazoned on them, or the player can opt for bright colors of the rainbow flag. 'UEFA is committed to making football a safe and welcoming environment for everybody, independent of who we love, our gender identification or gender expression,' the governing body said before the women's Euro 2022, where it also gave team captains the option of wearing rainbow bands. France captain Griedge Mbock Bathy has worn the regular band. So has Spain's Irene Paredes. Italy's Cristiana Girelli also sported the regular armband when she captained the team for the quarterfinal clash against Norway. But in a previous game against Spain, with Girelli unavailable, Elena Linari captained the team and opted to wear a rainbow armband. Mbock Bathy explained her decision to not wear the rainbow band on her arm. 'Highlighting a single issue also potentially excludes the others,' she was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. 'We cannot champion a single cause through our diverse group because there are so many causes to defend.' Mbock said the France team is 'so diverse that we cannot highlight just one cause. I think that the band with the word 'respect' really represents what we want to convey as a message and that is the most important thing.' Germany captain Janina Minge, Switzerland captain Lia Wälti, Norway captain Ada Hegerberg, Wales captain Angharad James, Iceland's Glódís Viggósdóttir, England's Leah Williamson are among those who have opted to sport the rainbow armband. England defender Lucy Bronze has also opted to wear a rainbow wristband during her team's quarterfinal win over Sweden, whose captain, Kosovare Asllani, also wore a rainbow armband. We couldnt adapt to conditions quickly: Smriti Mandhana
London, Jul 20 (PTI) Prolific opener Smriti Mandhana acknowledged that competing at Lord's turned out to be a tough test for India batters who could not adapt to the testing conditions and were indiscreet in their shot selection during the second One-day against England. After making a strong start to the series with a four-wicket in the opening match at Southampton, India received an eight-wicket hammering in a rain-curtailed game at the Lord's on Saturday night. Except vice-captain Mandhana (42) and Deepti Sharma (30 not out), no India player could offer a solid resistance to England bowlers as they managed only 143 for eight in 29 overs. 'I think as a batting unit, we couldn't adapt to the conditions quickly. We tried to play some shots which were maybe not, like, it was not easy on these sort of wickets, especially Lord's," Mandhana told reporters at the post-match press conference. Mandhana did admit that prolonged rain break before the start of the game did affect the concentration. 'Rain curtailed matches are always very hard in terms of getting your focus right because, of course, it was a long wait period. And losing the toss in these sort of matches doesn't help a lot. But, yeah, it's a good test for all of us. There are a few things which we could have gotten better." The elegant southpaw said getting runs at Lord's is always a grind and her team will return after taking some crucial lessons. 'A lot of girls played here for the first time. The excitement was quite high. So I'm sure a lot of people took a lot of memories and, of course, a lot of learning as well.. India had lost the World Cup final to the hosts here back in 2017. India lost the closely-fought final by nine runs but the team's performance did raise the profile of women's cricket back home. Mandhana said the last eight years have been phenomenal for women cricketers in India. 'It's been a journey since 2017 for women's cricket, especially back in India. We all were really disappointed that we could not win that day but when we went back home and the kind of reception we got, everyone started knowing a lot about women's cricket.. 'In the last eight years, I mean, wherever we play, we feel like it's home. People come out and watch us, criticise us, appreciate us, which is all good because, I mean, it's just on a rise in terms of people knowing and wanting to watch women's cricket, which is a great thing.". Mandhana was also asked about the 'Deepti Sharma Mankading incident' at Lord's back in September, 2022. Deepti had run-out Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end when the home batter backed up too far when the off-spinner was on delivery stride. It had sparked a debate about dismissal's legality and 'Spirit of Cricket" had once again reared its ugly head. 'It doesn't happen, right? You come to Lord's and that question is not asked. I think we didn't really think anything about all of that incident," Mandhana said. 'Only when today, I think, there was one random appeal for Tammy Beaumont when that happened. And, again, Deepti was bullying. That's when we cracked the joke. 'The whole match, last time when we won, of course, it was overshadowed quite a lot because of that one incident. But I would say the way we all actually played cricket in terms of that whole series. 'One incident cannot overshadow it. And the chat was only about how good we played and we have to just keep continuing that.
