Tesla makes major breakthrough in China with deal worth more than $550 million: 'Effectively solve the pressure of urban power'
The company will build a battery storage plant in Shanghai, CNBC reported. Tesla announced the deal on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
"The grid-side energy storage power station is a 'smart regulator' for urban electricity, which can flexibly adjust grid resources," Tesla wrote, per a Google translation from CNBC, adding that it will "effectively solve the pressure of urban power supply and ensure the safe, stable and efficient electricity demand of the city."
The deal is reportedly worth $556 million and will be the largest of its kind in China, per CNBC.
Battery storage plants are a necessity as renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, become more common. Because those sources don't provide consistent energy around the clock, these plants store the energy, allowing it to be used whenever it's needed.
The announcement marks a big step forward for Tesla's presence in China. It has a Shanghai factory that produces Megapacks, its utility-scale batteries.
It's also a positive development for the company, which has had a bumpy 2025. The company had lower car deliveries and sales during the first quarter, and its long-promised robotaxi service was delayed before finally launching in late June.
Despite Tesla's sluggish numbers, electric vehicles have never been more popular. Sales continue to increase globally as more people discover the benefits of making the switch away from gas-powered cars to much cleaner EVs.
EVs also have, on average, lower maintenance costs than gas-powered cars and don't require costly fuel fill-ups. And the cost of recharging your EV's battery can drop dramatically when using at-home solar energy, which is much cheaper than relying on the grid or using public charging stations.
EnergySage offers a free tool that makes it easy to compare quotes from local, vetted solar panel installers, which can result in up to $10,000 in savings. If buying solar panels isn't in your budget, leasing could be an option. Palmetto's LightReach program lets homeowners get all the advantages of solar energy — low monthly rates and a lower carbon footprint — with no money down.

Beyond Boundaries: Envision's Record 49-Hour Fire Test Breaks New Ground in Energy Storage Safety
SHANGHAI, July 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Envision Energy, a global leader in green technology, has successfully completed a groundbreaking large-scale fire test for its smart energy storage system, raising the bar for safety, environmental responsibility, and system resilience. Conducted under full on-site supervision by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group), strategic partners, and North American Fire Protection Engineers (FPEs), the test fully complied with the stringent CSA C800 standard – a consensus standard developed with input from insurers, regulators, and industry experts, providing one of the most authoritative international safety benchmarks for energy storage. World's Densest BESS Setup: 5cm Tightest Spacing, Zero Fire Propagation in 49 Hours The test recreated real-world worst-case site conditions by placing four fully charged (100% SOC) 5MWh Envision Smart Energy Storage containers (A, B, C, D) in an ultra-dense back-to-back, side-by-side configuration - just 5 centimeters apart, compared to the typical industry standard spacing of 3 to 5 meters. This setup represents the most energy-dense fire test layout ever attempted, significantly increasing the challenge due to heightened thermal coupling and limited airflow. Importantly, the burn was allowed to proceed with zero intervention. The test pushed the boundaries of the most stringent safety limits - yet even under unprecedented thermal stress and energy concentration, the system showed exceptional resilience and containment. Container A burned for 49 hours and 32 minutes, reaching a peak temperature of 1,297°C. Meanwhile, internal battery temperatures in the adjacent containers B, C, and D remained stable at just 35°C, 44°C, and 43°C respectively - well below our normal operational window. Notably, container A maintained structural integrity throughout the burn, showing no deformation, no collapse, and intact sealing gaskets. Even more impressively, there was zero fire spread or damage to neighboring containers. Units B, C, and D remained unscathed inside and out, with post-test inspections confirming all internal modules were fully operational and undamaged. 3-Hour Ignition Delay - Extended Window for Fire Response To simulate a worst-case ignition scenario, the fire was initiated by applying high-power, synchronized heating to four battery cells within a modified pack, from which the nano-level thermal insulation had been removed. The ignition source was strategically placed at the center of the container cluster - where fire spread risk is greatest in all directions. Under these extreme conditions, ignition took nearly three hours - over 50% longer than typical - offering a critical window for early detection and emergency response. Zero Emission Fire Testing - New Benchmark for Environmental Safety Environmental safety was also a key focus throughout the test. All combustion gases from the burning container A were captured by overhead smoke hoods, analyzed for composition, and fully neutralized through advanced treatment. The entire 49-hour test produced no odors, no emissions, and zero pollution, setting a new industry benchmark for clean and environmentally responsible fire testing in energy storage. AI-Driven Safety & Full Lifecycle Asset Protection Envision's AI-powered Smart Energy Storage System offers superior safety even under extreme conditions. It integrates Envision's proprietary high-safety battery cells within a robust three-layer safety architecture spanning cell, pack, and system levels. Coupled with AI-driven fire detection and active pack-level firefighting, the system isolates thermal events within a single container. To date, Envision's storage systems have been deployed in over 300 projects worldwide with zero safety incidents. This breakthrough fire test proves that even in highly unlikely fire scenarios, Envision's Smart Energy Storage can fully contain risk within a single container. The quantifiable safety results provide insurers with greater confidence to underwrite storage assets, paving the way for broader commercial adoption and accelerating the transition to safe, large-scale energy storage. Alibaba Group Announces Proposed Offering of Approximately HK$12 Billion of Zero Coupon Exchangeable Bonds
HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul 3, 2025-- Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA and HKEX: 9988 (HKD Counter) and 89988 (RMB Counter), 'Alibaba,' 'Alibaba Group' or the 'Company') today announced a proposed exchangeable bond offering (the 'Bond Offering') by reference to the ordinary shares of Alibaba Health Information Technology Limited ('Alibaba Health') that are listed on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (the 'Hong Kong Stock Exchange') (HKEX: 00241) ('AH Shares'). Subject to market and other conditions, the Company proposes to issue approximately HK$12 billion aggregate principal amount of Zero Coupon Exchangeable Bonds due 2032 (the 'Bonds') in a private offering to certain non-U.S. persons in offshore transactions outside the United States in reliance on Regulation S under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the 'Securities Act'). When issued, the Bonds will be unsecured and unsubordinated obligations of Alibaba Group. The Bonds will not bear regular interest. The Bonds will mature on July 9, 2032, unless earlier redeemed, exchanged or purchased in accordance with their terms prior to such date. Holders of the Bonds may exchange all or any portion of the Bonds at their option at any time on or after the 41st day following the issue date of the Bonds to, and including, the close of business on the fifth scheduled trading day immediately preceding the maturity date of the Bonds. Upon exchange, the Company may, at its option, elect to satisfy its exchange obligation by delivering AH Shares, cash, or a combination of cash and AH Shares, each in accordance with the terms set forth in the Bonds. The initial exchange price and other terms of the Bonds will be determined at the time of pricing of the Bonds. Alibaba Health is a consolidated subsidiary of Alibaba Group, in which Alibaba Group holds approximately 64% of equity interest. Alibaba Group expects Alibaba Health to remain a flagship healthcare platform and consolidated subsidiary of Alibaba Group both upon issuance and following any future exchange of the Bonds into AH Shares, and will continue close collaboration with Alibaba Health and members of Alibaba ecosystem to drive 'AI + Healthcare' industry transformation. Alibaba Group intends to use the net proceeds from the Bond Offering for general corporate purposes, including investments to support the development of our cloud infrastructure and international commerce businesses. Investor Hedging Transactions The Company expects that certain purchasers of the Bonds may employ a convertible arbitrage strategy by short selling AH Shares or by entering into short derivative positions with respect to AH Shares to hedge their exposure to the Bonds. Any such activity could take place concurrently with or shortly after the pricing of the Bonds and could lead to any decline (or offset against any appreciation) of the market price of AH Shares or any securities referencing AH Shares, including the Bonds. Further, such investors may dynamically modify their hedges from time to time while the Bonds are outstanding, by short selling or purchasing AH Shares in secondary market transactions or entering into equivalent derivative positions, which could affect the market price of AH Shares or any securities referencing AH Shares at the time, including the Bonds. Concurrently with the pricing of the Bonds, certain bookrunners of the Bond Offering expect to facilitate a sale of AH Shares, representing the expected initial delta of such hedging investors' short position, in privately negotiated transactions solely to non-U.S. persons outside of the United States (such sale, a 'Delta Placement'). In connection with the Delta Placement, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company (the 'Lender') has entered into a stock borrowing and lending arrangement with an affiliate of one of the bookrunners (the 'Borrower'), pursuant to which the Lender has committed to lending a certain number of AH Shares (the 'Borrowed Shares') to the Borrower. The Borrower has agreed to on-lend a portion of the Borrowed Shares to the other bookrunners to facilitate hedging activities of certain investors in the Bonds. Other Matters The Bonds, the AH Shares deliverable upon exchange of the Bonds, if any, and the Borrowed Shares (collectively, the 'Securities'), have not been and will not be registered under the Securities Act or any U.S. state securities laws, and are being offered and sold to certain non-U.S. persons in offshore transactions outside the United States in reliance on Regulation S under the Securities Act. The Securities may not be offered or sold in the United States absent registration or an exemption from registration under the Securities Act. This press release shall not constitute an offer to sell or a solicitation of an offer to purchase any securities, in the United States or elsewhere, and shall not constitute an offer, solicitation or sale of the securities in any state or jurisdiction in which such an offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful. This press release contains information about the pending Bond Offering and Delta Placement of Borrowed Shares, and there can be no assurance that the Bond Offering and/or the Delta Placement of Borrowed Shares will be completed. About Alibaba Group Alibaba Group's mission is to make it easy to do business anywhere. The Company aims to build the future infrastructure of commerce. It does not pursue size or power. It aspires to be a company that will last for 102 years. Safe Harbor Statement This press release contains forward-looking statements.
