Guardians activate reliever Paul Sewald from IL
In a corresponding move, the Guardians optioned lefty Doug Nikhazy to Triple-A Columbus.
Sewald pitched in 14 games for his new club before landing on the IL with a right shoulder strain on April 29. He had struggled, allowing eight earned runs in 11 2/3 innings of work (6.17 ERA). On a positive note, the right-hander had walked just two hitters while fanning 15.
Sewald saved 82 games from 2021-24 for the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. He recorded six saves in 10 appearances for the Diamondbacks in their 2023 run to the World Series.
Sewald was expected to fill a setup role in Cleveland in front of All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase.

Every single season has looked different in training camp. But one thing that will never change is the men are in camp for real. 'They have to report to work and they have to sleep in their hotel, they have a curfew, and if they leave, they get a huge fine. It's crazy. 'Training camp does last for multiple weeks and the women freak out because — so in my situation, I'm a mother. 'Now he has to abruptly leave, and [I'm] taking care of my rambunctious four-year-old by myself, who has never slept, and he is off the walls.' Searight mentioned how everyone is coming from a different situation - with some WAGs dealing with long-distance or a lack of job security. 'For some other people's situations, they're not based in the same city that the team plays… and they stay in the Bay just during the season,' Searight continued, using the 49ers as an example. 'The wives and girlfriends who are back home now have to get left and [their significant other] have to go report to work, go to camp. I get to see my husband every few days, they don't get to see their man at all for like weeks.' 'Another thing, minicamp is so intense. Some of the men are not guaranteed a spot yet, they are fighting for their spot on the team. So if they don't make this team and they end up on a different team, the family has to pack up and move. It's just a lot. 'Abrupt training camp change is no joke, so that's why you'll see all of the girlies going crazy online and then social media is a fun way to just distract from that time. 'So no, our men aren't our whole personality people. It just gives us a fun thing to look forward to. It's just content.' She boasts 257,000 followers on TikTok. She's been coupled up with Aiyuk since at least November of 2018 - while he was playing college football at Arizona State. Aiyuk and Searight have a son, Braylon, who was born in September of 2020 - per her Instagram. The wideout and the 49ers agreed to terms on a four-year $120million extension last season. It includes $76million in guarantees. San Francisco opens its 2025 campaign against the rival Seattle Seahawks on the road on September 7.

QB Michael Penix: Falcons' offense should be 'best in league'
July 25 - Michael Penix Jr. has high hopes ahead of his first full season as the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback. How high? Well, consider what Penix had to say on Thursday. "Potential? We should be the best in the league," the 25-year-old said. "You know, with the guys we got around us. You know we got a great offensive line as well ... we should be unstoppable." Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba avoid sanctions over All-Star snub
July 25 - Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba have not been sanctioned for skipping Wednesday's MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas, their coach confirmed Friday. Both players were voted into the showcase by the fans and media but neither featured in the MLS squad's 3-1 win against the Liga MX All-Stars. League rules stipulate that players who choose to opt out of the All-Star Game without an approved medical reason can face a one-match suspension. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano pointed out that his team had "played the most games so far this semester, by far" and that Messi "showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he's been playing," per ESPN. "Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days. But luckily, (Messi) is returning today," Mascherano said Friday. "Let's hope he can train alongside the group so we can count on both of them for tomorrow's game. We haven't received any (sanction)." Inter Miami host FC Cincinnati on Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mascherano said Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, will be available for the match depending on their fitness levels. Messi shares the MLS lead with 18 goals and has 10 assists in 17 league matches this season.
