Isaac McKneely helps Virginia knock off Virginia Tech
Anthony Robinson delivered 15 points and seven rebounds, both career highs, as Virginia (13-12, 6-8 ACC) won its third straight.
It was the first victory for the Cavaliers in Blacksburg since 2020 and avenged a loss at home to the Hokies two weeks ago. It was the first season since 2017-18 that the rivals won on each other's home floor.
Dai Dai Ames added 11 points and five assists and Andrew Rohde contributed seven points and nine assists for Virginia, which made 46 percent of its shots including 11 of 31 (35.5 percent) from 3-point range.
McKneely made six 3-pointers, including four in the second half.
Tobi Lawal provided 23 points and seven rebounds for Virginia Tech (11-14, 6-8) which trails in the 110-year old series 99-61.
Ben Hammond scored all 11 of his points in the second half to rally the Hokies, who trailed by 15 points in the first-half.
A driving layup by Hammond with 2:02 left, cut the deficit to 69-68. After two Rohde free throws, Hammond dished to Tyler Johnson for a layup which made it 71-70.
But with 1:05 left, Robinson finished an alley-oop feed from Rohde with a two-handed slam, which was the final basket of the game.
In the first half, Virginia went on a 12-1 run as Robinson scored half the points. McKneely and Ishan Sharma added triples during the spree which gave the Cavaliers a 17-8 lead.
Virginia expanded its edge to 32-17 as Elijah Saunders made a 3-pointer.
But Virginia Tech later answered with its own 12-1 run as Lawal and Brandon Rechsteiner drilled treys.
Saunders closed the half with a buzzer-beating corner 3 to give the Cavaliers a 40-33 lead.
Early in the second half, Jaydon Young sparked the Hokies with two desperation 3-pointers, both just before the shot-clock expired.
In the final 4:12, Hammond made a 3-pointer and a driving three-point play as the Hokies cut the deficit to 66-64.

The Washington Commanders ' hopes of returning to the site of their former home at RFK Stadium cleared a significant hurdle Friday when the District of Columbia Council approved the legislation. That issue did not come up during Friday's council meeting. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson's office recently estimated the redevelopment could generate $26.6 billion in tax revenue over 30 years. The district would contribute $1 billion toward the stadium project, while the team would fund the remaining $2.7 billion. ___

Texas lands Liberty transfer 2B Callum Early
July 30 - The Texas Longhorns added to their transfer portal class with the addition of Callum Early. The 6-foot, 170-pound Early hit .295 with two home runs, six doubles, 15 RBIs and an .837 OPS in 33 games as a freshman for Liberty last season. Listed as a second baseman, Early can also play the outfield and started 28 games. Early was the No. 47 ranked player in Virginia coming out of James River High School in Midlothian. Commanders inducting Santana Moss into Ring of Fame
July 27 - The Washington Commanders will induct wide receiver Santana Moss into the franchise's Ring of Fame during the Sept. 7 season opener against the New York Giants, the team announced Sunday. Moss played the last 10 seasons (2005-14) of his NFL career with Washington following four seasons with the New York Jets (2001-04). He ranks third in Washington franchise history in career catches (581), fourth in receiving yards (7,867) and seventh in touchdown receptions (47). Moss made his lone Pro Bowl in his first year in the nation's capital, catching 84 passes for a career-high 1,483 yards and nine TDs. His yardage total remains the Washington single-season record. The Commanders surprised Moss, 46, during a live broadcast with the team at training camp in Ashburn, Va. He was surrounded by friends and family members wearing burgundy caps with "MOSS" on the front and his jersey No. 89 on the sides. "Normally, I am so nonchalant," an emotional Moss said. "I don't know how to take in stuff, but man, that one right there ... I don't want to show my tears, but I'm about to shed some. I appreciate that news." Drafted in the first round (16th overall) by the Jets in 2001, Moss retired with 732 receptions for 10,283 yards and 66 scores in 197 games (135 starts).
