Over 3.5 million illegal excise goods seized in Dubai operation

In a major crackdown on tax evasion, inspectors from the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) have seized over 3.5 million illegal excise goods from a facility in Dubai. The raid uncovered tobacco and beverage products that were fraudulently packaged and smuggled into the UAE market—hidden inside shipments of clothing and footwear. Among the confiscated items were 1.56 million cigarette packs, 1.77 million electronic smoking devices, and thousands of packs of raw tobacco, hookah tobacco, and excise beverages. The total tax due on the goods is estimated at AED 133.2 million. All products have been confiscated, fines issued, and legal action taken against the violators. The FTA says the raid is part of ongoing efforts to tackle tax fraud and protect consumers. It emphasized the use of digital tax stamps and high-tech control systems to track excise goods—and urged all producers and importers to comply with UAE tax laws to avoid severe penalties.

More than 300,000 trees planted as part of Dubai's green push

Dubai Municipality has completed a series of landscaping and afforestation projects across key roads and intersections in the first half of 2025, as part of its broader Green Dubai initiative. The projects, worth AED 190 million, covered over 3 million square metres and saw more than 300,000 trees and seedlings planted, along with expansive ground cover and flowering plants. Native species like sidr, ghaf, and neem were included, along with ornamental trees to enhance the city's visual appeal. Some of the locations transformed include intersections along Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Khawaneej Street. Smart, sustainable irrigation systems powered by IoT technology are also part of the upgrades, ensuring efficient water use and long-term sustainability. Marwan bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, says the projects support the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and aim to enhance the quality of life across the emirate. In a striking design touch, the intersection of Al Khail Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street now features vertical lighting inspired by traditional Arab architecture—changing colours to mark national occasions. By the end of Q1 2025, Dubai Municipality was managing over 5.5 million trees and seedlings, 8.7 million square metres of green areas, 2 million square metres of seasonal flowers, 6.3 million square metres of ground covers, and 1.3 million linear metres of plant fencing.
