Saudi Arabia launches Humain to develop AI, may seek US partnership and favour from Donald Trump

India Today13-05-2025
The kingdom that made its fortune from oil is now drilling into data, not crude. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman has launched a new company called Humain (no, that's not a typo) that will build artificial intelligence technologies in the country, according to a report by Reuters. The AI company is part of Saudi Arabia's 2030 Vision programme that aims to reduce the country's oil dependency. And in this effort, Saudi Arabia will reportedly take some help from the US, and a favour from Donald Trump. advertisementThe US President on Tuesday arrived in Saudi Arabia, which is the first leg of his Middle East trip. Humain is chaired by the Crown Prince himself and is powered by Saudi Arabia's hefty Public Investment Fund, which is worth a staggering $940 billion.
'No patchwork, no vendors to juggle. Just one full stack, built for scale and ready to solve real problems,' reads Humain's website. What is the goal behind Humain (obviously apart from building AI)? The company reportedly plans to roll out serious infrastructure like next-gen data hubs, cloud platforms, and high-performance computing systems. Its flagship project: a large language model that understands Arabic and is tailor-made for users in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East. And the timing couldn't be more perfect. The Saudi data centre market is heating up fast — it's expected to nearly triple in size by the end of the decade, growing from $1.33 billion in 2024 to almost $4 billion by 2030. advertisementSpeaking of tech giants, Saudi Arabia is also looking west, literally. The launch of Humain is part of a larger charm offensive aimed at teaming up with American companies and investors. The Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh this week will likely look like a Silicon Valley reunion, with the likes of Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Mark Zuckerberg expected to attend. And then there's the Trump angle. While not officially confirmed, there's growing speculation that Saudi Arabia may be eyeing a friendlier White House in 2025 to help smoothen future collaborations. A closer relationship with Donald Trump could potentially open more doors for tech partnerships, investment approvals, and regulatory support from the US.To top it all off, Saudi Arabia is also working with chipmakers Groq and Cerebras, and is building what might soon be the world's largest AI inference data centre, according to a report by Forbes. Humain will reportedly be headed by former Aramco Digital and Rakuten executive Tareq Amin. 'This initiative will pave the way for a groundbreaking national AI strategy in Saudi Arabia, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to lead this mission,' Amin wrote in a Linkedin post last year.

Google makes new proposal to stave off EU antitrust fine

Google has proposed fresh changes to its search results in an attempt to fend off growing criticism from rivals, a week before a key meeting that could lead to yet another EU antitrust fine, according to a document seen by Reuters. The US tech giant has been under pressure after being hit in March with European Union antitrust charges of unfairly favouring its own services such as Google Shopping, Google Hotels and Google Flights over competitors. The company, owned by Alphabet, will meet its rivals and the European Commission to discuss its proposals during a July 7-8 workshop in Brussels, the document said. The EU's landmark Digital Markets Act, under which Google has been charged, sets out a list of dos and don'ts for Big Tech aimed at curbing their power and giving rivals more room to compete and consumers more choice. Last week, Google offered to create a box at the top of the search page for a so-called vertical search service (VSS) which would contain links to specialised search engines as well as to hotels, airlines, restaurants and transport services. The latest offer, called Option B, is an alternative to last week's proposal, according to a Google document sent by the Commission to involved parties and seen by Reuters. "Under 'Option B', whenever a VSS box is shown, Google will also show a box that includes free links to suppliers," the document said. The box for suppliers - in essence hotels, restaurants, airlines and travel services - would be below the VSS box, with Google organising the information about the suppliers. Option B "provides suppliers opportunities while not creating a box that can be characterised as a Google VSS", the document said. "We've made hundreds of alterations to our products as part of our DMA compliance," a Google spokesperson said. "While we strive for compliance, we remain genuinely concerned about some of the real world consequences of the DMA, which are leading to worse online products and experiences for Europeans." Google risks a fine as much as 10% of its global annual revenue if found in breach of the DMA.

Man Backs Donald Trump Despite Iranian Wife's Detention By Federal Agents

An ardent supporter of US President Donald Trump has refused to take down the MAGA flags outside his California residence despite his Iranian wife being detained by federal agents. The woman, Arpineh Masihi, was taken into custody in California's Diamond Bar city last week due to immigration issues that stemmed from a past conviction, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported. Days later, her husband, Arthu Sahakyan, said the US President was "not trying to do anything bad". Mr Sahakyan said that his family understood what Donald Trump was doing, adding the President wanted the best for the United States. "I'm just trying to make the best of it. I don't want any families to go through this. If they are, I apologise for what they're going through because it's hard," he added. Mr Sahakyan still supports Trump and has refused his friends' repeated requests to remove the MAGA flag from outside his home. "The flag stands," he said. Earlier, in a surveillance video, a few Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were seen outside the couple's home. The clip shows Ms Masihi going inside to say goodbye to her four children. Mr Sahakyan said the last time they saw her was when she came and "kissed the kids". Ms Masihi, who was born in Iran, entered the United States as a refugee at the age of three, he said. Her green card was revoked nearly 15 years ago following a conviction in a theft-related case. Mr Sahakyan claims it was for "misdemeanour stuff"; the family has since made all possible efforts to help her regain citizenship. Ms Masihi went for an immigration check-in in April this year. At the time, the officials told her that she was "fine" and asked to report in September or October, her husband said. He acknowledged that his opinion on the matter has "somewhat" shifted in light of the recent events. He received a call from his wife, who said she was "on the list to be going to a different facility". Over 130 Iranian nationals have been detained by ICE agents in the last week or so, Fox News reported. Tensions between the US and Iran escalated after Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on nuclear sites in Tehran. This triggered a response from Iran, which targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, where US forces are present. Days later, Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran after the two countries traded missiles for nearly two weeks and brought the region to the brink of an all-out war.
