Malaysia Airlines taps 'Pocket Rocketman' Azizulhasni Awang in sports branding drive
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, has named national track cycling legend Datuk Azizulhasni Awang—better known as the 'Pocket Rocketman'—as the official ambassador for MHsports, its specialised platform for sports travel. The high-profile appointment signals MAG's commitment to deepening engagement with Malaysia's sporting ecosystem while reinforcing national pride through strategic brand partnerships. By aligning with one of the country's most celebrated athletes, the Group aims to elevate Malaysia Airlines as not just a national carrier but a strong advocate for local sports excellence. This move comes as MAG accelerates its MHsports initiative—an end-to-end travel solution tailored for athletes and sports organisations, offering exclusive airfare discounts, extra baggage allowance for equipment, and flexible booking options. The platform is a key part of MAG's strategy to serve niche markets and build stronger emotional ties with Malaysian consumers. Azizulhasni, the first Malaysian cyclist to win an Olympic medal and a role model to young athletes nationwide, embodies the values of determination, discipline, and resilience—traits MAG hopes will inspire the next generation. Through the partnership, Malaysia Airlines will support Azizulhasni's preparations and participation in international competitions. He will also play an active role in MHsports' brand campaigns and youth outreach efforts aimed at promoting sports as a force for unity and national pride. Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, group managing director of MAG, said Malaysia Airlines 'remains deeply committed to supporting national sports development. "We are proud to play a role in the journeys of Malaysian athletes, providing travel solutions tailored to their needs as they represent the nation on the world stage. Our goal is to continue building meaningful support systems for the sporting community while contributing to Malaysia's growing presence in the international sports arena."

Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid tariff deadline concerns
Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8.03 am, the local currency strengthened to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, up from Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by cautious optimism ahead of the looming Aug 1 tariff deadline. At 8.03 am, the local currency strengthened to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, up from Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is likely to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 today as markets remain wary of potential tariff impacts. 'Investors are adopting a guarded stance, waiting for clearer signals on trade policies,' he noted. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes attributed the ringgit's early gains to shifting macroeconomic conditions. 'The US dollar is under pressure from falling Treasury yields and domestic political concerns, which is benefiting emerging market currencies like the ringgit,' he said. Innes added that the ringgit's rebound reflects more than just a temporary bounce. 'A softer dollar, renewed trade talks, and hopes for tariff relief are creating a favourable environment for the ringgit,' he told Bernama. He also highlighted ongoing negotiations between Malaysia and the US, where Malaysian officials are reportedly seeking a reduced tariff rate of 15–20 per cent, compared to the proposed 25 per cent. Against other major currencies, the ringgit showed mixed performance. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8767/8891 from 2.8690/8739 and dipped versus the euro to 4.9528/9740 from 4.9512/9594. However, it edged higher against the British pound, rising to 5.7052/7295 from 5.7088/7183. Regionally, the ringgit strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.3001/3144 from 3.3011/3071 and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.7 from 259.1/259.7. It also gained slightly against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.43 from 7.41/7.43. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.1138/1767 from 13.0899/1172. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar: RM100 One-Off Aid for All Adults via MyKad from Aug 31
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced that all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme in conjunction with National Day on Aug 31. 'In celebration of our National Day, I am pleased to announce that every adult Malaysian will receive RM100 through their MyKad under the SARA programme,' he said during a special address today. 'This aid can be used starting Aug 31 until Dec 31, 2025, to purchase essential items at over 4,100 participating stores nationwide, including major supermarkets like Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave, 99Speedmart, and grocery stores in every district.' Anwar clarified that the assistance is given on an individual basis and not by the household. 'That means a household consisting of a husband, wife, and two adult children will receive RM400 in total. This initiative is expected to benefit 22 million Malaysians and involves a total allocation of RM2 billion,' he said. He added that with this new injection, the combined allocation for STR and SARA has now increased from RM13 billion to RM15 billion for 2025, marking the first time in history that direct cash aid is being distributed to all adult citizens. 'I understand that some among us may have the financial means and do not need this assistance. 'For those who choose not to use it, the government intends to channel the unused balance at the end of the year towards programmes that support vulnerable communities next year,' he said.
