Hero Edinburgh RNLI crews race to 'kite-surfer in difficulty' at beauty spot
The RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat was sent to Pettycur Bay on Saturday, July 26, to undertake a search of the area.
The team were made aware after participating in a demonstration alongside Kinghorn Lifeboat. The casualty was located just east of the No.8 channel market off Kinghorn Bay.

They had been drifting out of the bay and unable to get their kite back up. The casualty was then taken back to where they had launched from at Pettycur Beach.
A statement from RNLI Queensferry reads: "Queensferry Lifeboat and crew were visiting Kinghorn Bay to take part in Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Open Day celebrations on Saturday 26 July.
"Just after participating in a demonstration alongside Kinghorn Lifeboat, UK Coastguard recieved reports of a kitesurfer in difficulty at Pettycur Bay. As Kinghorn Lifeboat had already recovered and Queensferry Lifeboat was in the area, the Queensferry crew were tasked to the incident.

"The lifeboat arrived on scene within minutes and undertook a short search of the area. The casualty was located just east of the No.8 channel marker off Kinghorn Bay.
"The casualty had been drifting out of the bay and unable to get their kite back up. Volunteer crew recovered the casualty and kite surfing equipment to the lifeboat. The casualty was taken back to where they had launched from at Pettycur Beach and had been with a group of kitesurfers, who had raised the alarm."

Firefighters rescue dog from Fort Lauderdale canal; credit 911 callers as true heroes
A group of Fort Lauderdale firefighters rescued a German shepherd from a canal Tuesday morning, but the first responders say the real credit belongs to the 911 callers who alerted them. "A life's a life. Whether it's an animal, whether it's a person," said Captain David Landers with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. The incident happened at the start of the firefighters' shift behind Sweeting Park on Northwest 23rd Avenue. Firefighters from Station 47 responded to the call after a dog was spotted in the canal. Captain Landers said they made contact with the female dog before entering the canal. "We made contact with the puppy. She was docile, very frail," Landers said. "There's a little ledge there, so I didn't have to dive in the water or anything. I just had to take my shoes off and go down and grab her out," said Lieutenant Mason McConchie, who assisted in the rescue. The firefighters credited the good Samaritans who called 911 for making the rescue possible. "The callers are the true heroes because had they not had called nobody would've known the dog was in the water," Landers said. Fede Skinner and Aisha Fahmy, who made the call, said they had seen the dog multiple times earlier in the morning. "It's pretty scary because at some point the dog was in the middle of the road. And there was like three different cars that almost hit it. It was kind of terrifying, to be honest," said Fahmy. After the dog disappeared, they went for a walk in the park. "We're talking right here and out of the corner of my eye I see something fall in the water over there and it's the dog," said Skinner. "When I heard the splash I looked over. I was terrified. So I was really, really happy to like, see the dog be safe at the end," Fahmy added. Fort Lauderdale Police located the dog's registered owner, who lives in St. Cloud, Florida, and will be traveling to Fort Lauderdale to pick her up.

Oxford leisure centres offering free week-long trial to some residents
Some Oxfordshire residents are being offered a seven-day free trial at Oxford's leisure centres. The offer applies to Oxford City Council's three leisure centres - Barton Leisure Centre, Leys Pools and Leisure Centre, and Ferry Leisure Centre. It is available for people living in areas that may become part of the proposed Greater Oxford Council, which includes Berinsfield, Botley, Kennington, Kidlington, and Wheatley. Councillor Susan Brown, leader of Oxford City Council, said: "We believe Oxford has the best leisure offer in the region. "We're proposing a new council for Oxford and its surrounding villages, and we want residents of those villages to experience Oxford's leisure offer now. "Take advantage of the free seven-day trial – and have your say on the Greater Oxford proposals by filling in the online survey." The trial comes after the government asked councils across England for proposals on simplifying the structure of local government in their regions. Oxford City Council has suggested replacing Oxfordshire's six councils with three new authorities - Greater Oxford Council, Northern Oxfordshire Council, and Ridgeway Council. Greater Oxford Council would cover Oxford and its Green Belt, Northern Oxfordshire Council would cover most of the existing Cherwell and West Oxfordshire districts, and Ridgeway Council would cover most of the existing South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse districts, combined with the existing West Berkshire unitary. The city council says all three councils would have natural geographic and demographic connections, local accountability to residents, and would be viable under the government's plans. Currently, only Oxford residents are eligible for the city council's community services, which include free swimming for under-17s, youth activities through the Oxford Youth Ambition programme, and discounted leisure centre memberships for individuals on qualifying benefits. Under the reorganisation plans, these services could be extended to all Greater Oxford residents, potentially including leisure centres in Berinsfield, Kidlington, and Wheatley. The leisure centres are operated by More Leisure and offer gyms, swimming pools, and a variety of fitness programmes. To take part in the free trial, residents can book online at Oxford City Council has also launched an online survey to gather feedback on the Greater Oxford Council proposals before submitting its final proposal to the government in November. The survey, which takes around 10 minutes to complete, is available on the council's consultation portal and will close on August 12. Post-World War II-locomotive to arrive for heritage railway gala
A post-World War II locomotive will be heading to a historic railway near Swindon next month. Swindon & Cricklade Railway, a volunteer-run heritage site, will be hosting the Railway 200 Gala. It will celebrate 200 years of railway, with an event from September 19 to September 21, with the GWR Large Prairie No. 4144 coming along. According to Didcot Railway, the 4144 was built at Swindon in September 1946 and, having spent time as the Severn Tunnel banker, was withdrawn from Severn Tunnel Junction depot in March 1965. Swindon and Cricklade Railway shared a post on their Facebook page, they said: "We're continuing to look back at some fantastic memories — including visits from guest steam locomotives like GWR Pannier Tank No. 4612 and Small Prairie No. 5542. "With GWR Large Prairie No. 4144 heading our way this September for the Railway 200 Gala, we're getting rather excited about recreating more scenes like these."
