The beautiful city crowned most walkable in the USA

Daily Mail02-07-2025
The most walkable city in the USA has been revealed – and it's earned the top spot for the third consecutive year.
In the USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, 20 cities across the country are picked by a panel of travel experts and voted on by the public.
Each location is selected based on proximity of hotels and attractions, pedestrian accessibility and overall ease of exploration.
Philadelphia emerged as North America's most walkable city, surpassing several popular tourist destinations such as New York City, Chicago, and Boston.
New York City is ranked 10th on the list, followed by Washington DC, in ninth place, Savannah, Georgia, in eighth and Chicago, Illinois, in seventh.
San Francisco, California, ranked sixth, while Boston, Massachusetts, came in fifth, followed by Columbus, Ohio at number four, Burlington, Vermont in third place and Providence, Rhode Island in second.
The top honour marks the Philadelphia's long-standing appeal as a destination that is easy to navigate by residents and visitors alike.
The city's vibrant and historical neighbourhoods are interconnected by wide, bustling sidewalks, where pedestrians can explore sights ranging from lush, green spaces and notable landmarks, to public art installations and premier cultural institutions.
Being able to explore 'Philly' with ease means travellers waste no time in discovering and sampling the very best of the city's history, culture, cuisines and hidden gems.
The Centre City Philadelphia corridor spans 2.4 miles from the Delaware River on the east to the Schuylkill River on the west, with pedestrians able to walk from one end of Centre City to the other within just one hour.
The densely-packed corridor also offers a streamlined experience for explorers to discover locally owned businesses, boutiques, cafes, museums and galleries, such as Independence Hall or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Visitors are encouraged to book a walking tours or tour experience - each specially curated for personal interests in architecture, food, history or art - which can help to soak up as much of the city's offerings as possible.
Gregg Caren, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: 'We're thrilled that Philadelphia has been named the most walkable city in the US for the third year in a row.
'Walkability is one of our greatest strengths, especially for international travellers who want to maximise their time exploring the city.
'With world-class hotels, historic sites, diverse dining, and cultural attractions all within a compact, accessible footprint, Philadelphia delivers an experience that's easy to navigate and hard to forget.'
For those planning a trip to Philadelphia, the International Visitors Guide highlights Philadelphia's diversity and inclusivity and features specialised itineraries tailored to all kinds of visitors, including families, foodies, art lovers and the LGBTQ+ community.
Meanwhile, Heather Anderson, a 43-year-old writer from Washington, has visited all 50 states and here she reveals the USA's most underrated destinations to MailOnline Travel.
It took the adventurer around 40 years to visit every state, a mission that she explains she took 'very seriously' over the last two decades.
Heather tells MailOnline Travel that there are five underrated US states, saying: 'Each of these states has an often overlooked amount of natural beauty and outdoor recreation. They also have interesting history, lively cities and incredibly friendly people.'

Shortest flights in UK including route that's quicker than making a Pot Noodle

With the kids breaking up for the school summer holidays today, many families will be gearing up to jet off to exotic locations abroad. And while many of us are used to sitting on planes for hours on end to get to our favourite destinations, you can actually take flights from the UK that last just minutes. 3 3 3 Westray to Papa Westray The shortest passenger flight in the entire world is the Loganair flight between Westray and Papa Wrestay, in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Passengers can travel between the two tiny islands in just one and a half minutes, with the record for the fastest flight just 53 seconds. The distance between the two islands is just 1.7 miles, with flights running every single day. Tickets will set you back just £8, and the flight is much quicker than the alternative option, a 25 minute ferry. Other Orkney Inter-Island Flights Although the Westray to Papa Westray flight is by far the UK's shortest, there are also a number of other short flights connecting the Orkney Islands. These Loganair flights connect the islands to Kirkwall, Orkney's main hub. For example, Kirkwall to Westray takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and Kirkwall to Sanday takes around 15-20 minutes. London to Channel Islands Anyone looking for a holiday close to home this summer can fly from the capital to the Channel Islands, such as Jersey and Guernsey in around 30-40 minutes. Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, was named one of the world's best islands in the Conde Nast Travellers' 2024 Readers' Choice Awards. Its beaches are well known for their beauty, with a range of landscapes on offer, from wide, open spaces to secluded coves and lunar-like expanses, making it the perfect destination for anyone who isn't a fan of long haul flights. Travel chaos as TWO flights have mid-air emergencies within A MINUTE at major UK airport UK mainland to Isle of Man Another popular tourist destination within the UK is the Isle of Man. which boasts stunning sandy beaches, seals and Victorian railways. You can access the island by ferry (as influencer Molly-Ma e recently did) or you can take a commercial flight. Regular flights take off from airports such as Manchester and Liverpool, and take between 30-50 minutes. Flights from mainland Scotland to Scottish Islands Loganair also runs short flights connecting people in other remote Scottish Islands to the mainland. For example, a flight from either Glasgow or Edinburgh to the Outer Hebrides takes around 50 minutes, and a flight from one of the main Scottish cities to Shetland takes approximately one hour. None of these islands are far from the mainland, but due to challenging ferry conditions, are often the preferred option for travellers. If you're looking for an adventure a bit more long haul, Qantas has unveiled plans to launch the world's longest flights between Sydney and London and New York. The non-stop flights are expected to take over 19 hours, and are set to launch in 2026. How to get a free upgrade to first class on a plane Travelers often wonder how to secure an upgrade to first class without paying the premium price. According to a flight attendant, there are several strategies passengers can employ to increase their chances. Firstly, loyalty to an airline is crucial; frequent flyers and those with elite status are more likely to receive upgrades. Additionally, booking directly with the airline rather than through third-party sites can improve your odds, as can being flexible with your travel dates and times. Dressing smartly and arriving early can also make a difference. While airlines generally prioritize upgrades based on status and fare class, a well-dressed passenger who checks in early may catch the staff's attention. It's also beneficial to be polite and friendly to the airline staff, as they have the discretion to upgrade passengers at their own judgment. Lastly, if you're celebrating a special occasion, such as a honeymoon or birthday, it doesn't hurt to mention it. While not guaranteed, some flight attendants might consider this when deciding on upgrades. Overall, while there's no surefire way to get a free upgrade, combining these strategies can certainly improve your chances.

Fury as Delta rolls out sinister new tool to ensure it gets away with the highest possible fares

Delta Air Lines is under fire from lawmakers who say the carrier's new AI ticket-pricing plans could mean higher fares for ordinary Americans already buckling under rising costs. America's second-largest US airline by daily flights says it's expanding a pilot program that uses computers to help set fares. By the end of the year, 20 percent of all fares will be set AI in partnership with Fetcherr, a pricing company. Democratic senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal fired off a letter to Delta CEO Ed Bastian demanding to know if its AI tools are designed to hike fares up to each passenger's personal 'pain point.' A Delta exec previously boasted the system can predict 'the amount people are willing to pay for the premium products related to the base fares,' sparking fears of a digital price squeeze. Delta insists it isn't using personal data to target individual passengers, saying dynamic pricing has been standard for decades and that 'all customers see the same fares and offers in all retail channels.' The airline says AI is only being tested to forecast demand, factor in thousands of market variables in real time, and speed up manual pricing adjustments. It's not the first AI pricing storm to hit the airline industry. Back in January, Blumenthal and other lawmakers grilled Frontier and Spirit over alleged seat fee manipulation, but the low-cost carriers never answered. Delta said it is using AI tools to figure out how much each customer is willing to pay to get on their flights 'This is a full reengineering of how we price and how we will be pricing in the future,' Glen Hauenstein, Delta's president, said during a June 10 earnings call. 'We like it a lot, and we're continuing to roll it out.' Consumer advocates are warning that the program could be 'predatory' for consumers and could spell the end of 'fair' pricing. If the tech lands smoothly, Delta says it could eventually hand over nearly all pricing decisions to its new digital co-pilot. Hauenstein said the AI is still in a 'heavy testing phase,' and reiterated the company will not rush the program out to its customers if issues arise. Airlines have long offered different prices for consumers, even for the same journey, based off factors including how far in advance they buy the ticket and whether they shop directly or with a comparison-shopping site. But AI is now supercharging changes to pricing models. 'AI isn't just optimizing business operations, but fundamentally rewriting the rules of commerce and consumer experience,' Matt Britton, author of Generation AI, told Fortune. 'For consumers, this means the era of 'fair' pricing is over. The price you see is the price the algorithm thinks you'll accept, not a universal rate.' The AI announcement comes as Delta made some major news about its profits forecast. Delta's CEO, Ed Bastian, said customers cut back on domestic economy seats amid economic uncertainty In April, the company pulled its financial guidance, saying the American economy was going through too much turmoil to determine how much money the company would make. Ed Bastian, the company's CEO, said consumer confidence 'certainly took a big dip in the early part of the year and then again in April, after the Liberation Day announcements were made.' But now the company has reinstated its profit guidance after it beat Wall Street's expectations for the second quarter of the year. Still, the company is facing some customer headwinds. Delta said that domestic economy seat sales fell 5 percent in the previous quarter. It will cut some domestic flights from the schedule in August.

TSA announces game changing program to 'streamline security' that passengers will love

Your summer vacation just got a whole lot easier, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) beginning their new, streamlined program for international travelers. The new One Stop Security program (OSS) will be implemented from this week, as per Fox News. The program will allow passengers who are arriving in the U.S. from international airports with connecting flights to bypass TSA re-screening to board their next flight if it is domestic. It's expected to cut out long connection times, which typically include clearing U.S. Customs, claiming checked bags, occasionally rechecking bags, and then clearing TSA security, with American Airlines estimating it could cut down the connection time in airports by half. David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer at American Airlines, described the program as one of the most forward-thinking enhancements that the airline can bring to international travel. 'It delivers a level of convenience and time-savings that's never been available before to customers connecting from international flights,' he said. 'With this game-changing program [our] customers will spend significantly less time worrying about an onerous connection process and more time enjoying their travel journey.' American Airlines and Delta Air Lines partnered with TSA to launch the program in London's Heathrow International Airport on Friday. The process allowed customers traveling from London who were connecting through the airline's largest hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), to clear U.S. Customs right at the arrival gate. Delta Air Lines will launch its one-stop flight arriving at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport by the end of July, according to TSA. has reached out to TSA for comment. A 2024 article published in Airports Council International suggested that One-Stop Security will significantly reduce connection times and stress for transfer passengers. 'One-Stop Security significantly reduces connection times and stress for transfer passengers,' it noted. TSA Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl told Fox News Digital more airports globally will be added to the program in the month ahead. 'It really is a commonsense security approach for us to streamline security from abroad to the United States,' he told the publication. He added: 'It really underscores and piggybacks onto the president's and the administration's golden age of travel,' and promised there are 'no impacts to security.' Last week, the Department of Homeland Security revealed it is reviewing the 3.4-ounce limit, igniting hopes of a long-overdue update to airport security protocols. 'I will tell you, the liquids [rule] I am questioning,' Kristi Noem told NewsNation chief Washington Correspondent Blake Burman at the inaugural Hill Nation Summit. 'So that may be the next big announcement is what size your liquids need to be. We're looking at it.' Containers carrying liquids, aerosols, creams and gels over 3.4 ounces are not allowed in carry-on bags, and can only be taken onto flights if they are in checked luggage. TSA enforces the '3-1-1 rule,' which applies specifically to liquid storage in a carry-on. As per the policy, containers holding liquids must be the 3.4-ounce weight limit or less, all containers must fit in one quart-sized clear bag inside a carry-on, and only one of these bags is permitted per flier, according to the agency. The new policy comes as the U.S. prepares for a barrage of large events in the next few years, including the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup matches.
