England captain Ben Stokes has been accused of lacking honesty and making 'poor excuses' as he blamed the Edgbaston pitch for mirroring 'subcontinent' conditions, resulting in the home team's first defeat against India at the venue on Sunday.
Indian cricket team won their first match at the Birmingham stadium in 58 years as they defeated England by a massive 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 after two matches. The margin of defeat exposed England's poor display in the match as they only managed to score 678 runs across two innings on a flat track where India posted more than 1,000 runs.

Besides Indian batters outperforming England counterparts, the Indian fast bowlers also came across as a better lot, taking 18 out of 20 wickets. Akash Deep took a 10-wicket haul in the match while Mohammed Siraj accounted for seven wickets.
Stokes blames 'subcontinent' pitch at Edgbaston for defeat
Despite the Indian pacers flourishing on a flat track, Stokes felt the Edgbaston pitch was more like a subcontinent track and it played out in the visiting team's favour.
'To be honest, it's probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it's got deeper and deeper into the game,' Stokes told BBC's Test Match Special. 'You know, there certainly is a little bit in it to start off with, and I think we exposed that very, very well early on.
'But yeah, then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just, yeah, it became a real tough slog for us and obviously, with the Indian attack and the conditions that they were used to and used some of how to expose those conditions, just sort of a little bit better than that can happen sometimes,' he added.
Stokes criticised by England fans for making excuses
The England cricket team fans were unhappy with Stokes' 'excuses' as they lambasted the captain and their team for trying to take away credit from the Indian team and blaming the pitch for their fallacies.
'What absolute rot. Sundar and Jadeja took 2/68 (21) in the fourth Innings,' a fan wrote on X. 'It was a slog because we simply couldn't match them in the new ball stage. Admit to our failings and how well India bowled.'

A few other fans said that they would want Stokes to be honest and accept his mistakes.
I'd welcome some honesty from Stokes. For example, 'I made a big error with fielding after winning the toss', and 'our spinner isn't performing as we would like', and 'not all of our top 6 are firing', and 'our seam attack lacks a cutting edge' Just saying…. — Dave Raw (@davetheraw) July 6, 2025

I watched virtually all the match and it was like India were batting and bowling on a completely different wicket to us. Totally outclassed we were, as we were for large parts of the first test too. Another defeat at Lord's and I don't see any way back. — Dave Hill (@davehill_56) July 6, 2025

Kasparov feels Gukesh not yet ready to conquer Blitz after sudden loss of form in Croatia: 'Something is wrong...'

D Gukesh endured a miserable run in the Blitz leg of SuperUnited Croatia after shining in the Rapid games to surrender the title to Magnus Carlsen and finish third on the overall standnings. read more Garry Kasparov had earlier heaped praise on D Gukesh for his victory over Magnus Carlsen in the Rapid leg of SuperUnited Croatia. Image credit: Grand Chess Tour/Reuters Legendary Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov felt reigning Classical world champion D Gukesh isn't ready for conquering Blitz chess just yet, especially after his poor performance in the format at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia event that concluded on Sunday. Gukesh enjoyed a superb run in the Rapid section of the event, where defeated world No 1 Magnus Carlsen for the second consecutive time after beating him at last month's Norway Chess and finished top of the standings with 14 points. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The third event of the 2025 Grand Chess Tour, however, was one where the winner would be decided by the total points accumulated across the Rapid and Blitz legs of the it was in the latter where Gukesh undid all of his hard work in the Rapid games, enduring a horrid run that saw the 19-year-old end Day 1 of the Blitz leg with seven defeats in nine rounds, including the first five on the bounce. Though Gukesh put up an improved display on the final day of the tournament, it wasn't enough as he finished third on the overall standings in 19.5 points, behind Carlsen (22.5) and Wesley So (20). 'We didn't see the tenacity' Former world champion and world No 1 Kasparov felt the solid victory over Carlsen had a psychological impact on the 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster which, together with his struggles in the Blitz format, led to his torrid run in the last two days of the event in Zagreb. 'I thought Gukesh's games were feeble yesterday and today. Because it's very fast, and he's probably not ready to show his skills in Blitz,' Kasparov had said after the conclusion of the penultimate day of the tournament. 'In Blitz, every gram of your energy that is being wasted on something else just has a very negative effect.' 'The games he lost today, some of them were just terrible. Losing to Magnus I understand, anybody can lose the game. But even in this game, we didn't see the tenacity. 'Something is wrong with Gukesh. Yesterday was not a great day. His games were very feeble. Yes, he beat (Wesley) So, but his game against (Anish) Giri was a sign of trouble for me,' the 62-year-old added. Thanks to Gukesh's sudden drop in form, Carlsen surged ahead in the Blitz games and finished top of the standings despite claiming he produced his "B-game" in Zagreb. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Soccer-Putellas finds flow state as Spain thump Belgium 6-2

By Philip O'Connor HT Image THUN, Switzerland, July 7 (Reuters) - Spain striker Alexia Putellas scored two cracking goals as her side defeated Belgium 6-2 on Monday to all but guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage at the Women's Euros, with the 31-year-old saying she found a flow state in the game that made it come easy to her. Finding herself in the zone on a wet, blustery evening, Putellas picked up her second straight player of the game award and contributed hugely to Spain overcoming a sloppy start to put the Belgians to the sword. "I think there are plenty of moments in a game, the team had an excellent performance, and even if we almost always have things we can improve, I believe that team is fine. We feel comfortable, if there's something that doesn't work we can change and adapt," she told reporters. Putellas opened the scoring with a typical Spanish goal midway through the first half, punctuating an intricate passing move with a powerful strike, and she netted Spain's sixth goal late on to cap a fine individual display. Asked whether her flow state came from her own performance or from that of the team, Putellas said it was a little bit of both. "They go hand in hand; as an individual you think about the group and when you feel we are all together, you flow, it makes me feel good of course," she explained. "I have this role of creating options, sometimes I finish them, sometimes others do, (but) I'm feeling great." Belgium proved a tough nut to crack but Putellas and her team trusted themselves to score, no matter who ended up getting the goals. "When we have them in the low block, we have more options, we are closer to the box. It's not that it's better for me or affects my performance, my objective is to choose the best action in every situation," Putellas said. (Reporting by Philip O'Connor; editing by Clare Fallon)

"We were overjoyed when he took 10 wickets..did not remember my problem": Akash Deep's sister, who is battling cancer

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 8 (ANI): Akash Deep's sensational 10-wicket haul in India's historic win over England at Edgbaston wasn't just a sporting triumph; it was a deeply personal one. As the young pacer tore through the English batting lineup, his sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who has been battling cancer for the past two months, felt immense joy and pride. 'Akash dedicated his victory to me, and I feel very proud of him... We were overjoyed when he took 10 wickets. We were all clapping here. I did not remember my sadness at all when he took wickets,' she told ANI. Akash revealed earlier after the match that he had kept his sister's illness private and was playing with one mission in mind, to make her happy. 'The biggest thing is that I have not told anyone yet. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is stable now. She is fine. She will be the happiest. She has been going through this mentally for the last two months,' Akash said in a heartfelt conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara. 'I was playing this match for her. I have to make her happy with this match,' he added. Akash's mother, Laddooma Devi, expressed immense pride in her son's performance, calling it the realisation of a long-cherished dream. 'I feel very proud... I am very happy... It was my dream that he should play for the Indian team... Maybe Akash takes 10-10 wickets like this. he should play like this for India in future,' she said. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer.
