Ben Stokes accused of lacking honesty as he calls Edgbaston pitch ‘subcontinent' track after defeat: 'Admit to our failings'

England captain Ben Stokes has been accused of lacking honesty and making 'poor excuses' as he blamed the Edgbaston pitch for mirroring 'subcontinent' conditions, resulting in the home team's first defeat against India at the venue on Sunday.
Indian cricket team won their first match at the Birmingham stadium in 58 years as they defeated England by a massive 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 after two matches. The margin of defeat exposed England's poor display in the match as they only managed to score 678 runs across two innings on a flat track where India posted more than 1,000 runs.

Besides Indian batters outperforming England counterparts, the Indian fast bowlers also came across as a better lot, taking 18 out of 20 wickets. Akash Deep took a 10-wicket haul in the match while Mohammed Siraj accounted for seven wickets.
Stokes blames 'subcontinent' pitch at Edgbaston for defeat
Despite the Indian pacers flourishing on a flat track, Stokes felt the Edgbaston pitch was more like a subcontinent track and it played out in the visiting team's favour.
'To be honest, it's probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it's got deeper and deeper into the game,' Stokes told BBC's Test Match Special. 'You know, there certainly is a little bit in it to start off with, and I think we exposed that very, very well early on.
'But yeah, then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just, yeah, it became a real tough slog for us and obviously, with the Indian attack and the conditions that they were used to and used some of how to expose those conditions, just sort of a little bit better than that can happen sometimes,' he added.
Stokes criticised by England fans for making excuses
The England cricket team fans were unhappy with Stokes' 'excuses' as they lambasted the captain and their team for trying to take away credit from the Indian team and blaming the pitch for their fallacies.
'What absolute rot. Sundar and Jadeja took 2/68 (21) in the fourth Innings,' a fan wrote on X. 'It was a slog because we simply couldn't match them in the new ball stage. Admit to our failings and how well India bowled.'

A few other fans said that they would want Stokes to be honest and accept his mistakes.
I'd welcome some honesty from Stokes. For example, 'I made a big error with fielding after winning the toss', and 'our spinner isn't performing as we would like', and 'not all of our top 6 are firing', and 'our seam attack lacks a cutting edge' Just saying…. — Dave Raw (@davetheraw) July 6, 2025

I watched virtually all the match and it was like India were batting and bowling on a completely different wicket to us. Totally outclassed we were, as we were for large parts of the first test too. Another defeat at Lord's and I don't see any way back. — Dave Hill (@davehill_56) July 6, 2025

It took more than 50 years for India to win at three of England's iconic test grounds
India defeated England by 336 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 6. Not only did this win end India's drought of 58 years at the venue, but it's also the nation's biggest test win years, English grounds remained India's toughest battleground in test cricket. From Lord's to Edgbaston, each win came after decades of hardship. India played its first test against England at Lord's on June 25, 1932, but it took the Indian team 54 years to win a test there — on June 10, 1986! Similarly, it took 48 years for India to win at Trent Bridge and 35 years at The But why is the Edgbaston win historic? Because it was the only English battlefield that no Asian country has ever conquered. India has played nine matches there since 1967, Pakistan has played eight matches since 1962, and Sri Lanka played two test matches there, against England in 2006. Barring yesterday's victory by India, no other team has so far managed no Bumrah, no Shami, and a pitch where Indian batters made over 1,000 runs, India needed a bit of magic in this match to win, and it was Akash Deep and Sriraj who made this possible. Akash Deep, a 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler from Bihar who grew up in Kolkata, took 10 wickets for 187 runs. A 10-wicket haul in a test match came to India after 39 years. Earlier, it was Chetan Sharma, a right-arm fast-medium bowler, who took 10 wickets at Edgbaston in 1986, giving 188 this victory, India's test journey in England is no longer defined by wait and loss, but by patience and growth. With this win at Birmingham, India made a score of 1-1 with England in a test series of five matches, with three matches remaining.- EndsTune InMust Watch

IND vs ENG: Massive boost for England! Head coach reveals new weapon 'ready to go' for 3rd Test
Brendon McCullum, England Head Coach (Image by) England head coach Brendon McCullum has hinted that Jofra Archer could make a return to the Test side for the third match against India at Lord's, set to commence on Thursday. Archer, who was part of the squad for the second Test at Edgbaston but did not feature, is being considered as England look to freshen up their pace attack following a heavy 336-run defeat that levelled the series at 1-1. 'He's ready to go,' McCullum said about the express pacer, who last played a Test in February 2021. 'It's hugely exciting, he's buzzing as well. He's obviously been through his injuries and his time out of Test cricket , but we all know what he's capable of achieving and we hope that when the opportunity does arrive for him, he's able to recapture and improve on what he's been able to do already,' added the head coach as quoted by AFP. The 30-year-old Archer has played just one first-class match this season, bowling 18 overs for Sussex, but remains a key weapon England are seriously considering deploying at Lord's. India, meanwhile, have already confirmed that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will return after being rested for the second Test. 'Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere': Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win McCullum also addressed England's spin options, backing Shoaib Bashir to continue despite an expensive outing in the first two Tests, where he has taken eight wickets at an average close to 60. 'We know he's not the finished article yet, but I feel like he's getting better and better. As the series wears on, I think we'll see him play quite a big hand,' McCullum said. Poll Should Jofra Archer be included in the Test squad for the 3rd match against India? Yes, he should play No, stick to the same squad The coach also clarified that Jacob Bethell, though a more capable batsman than Bashir, won't be considered as a spin replacement. 'He's a batting option. He's the next one in if something happens, but we don't crowbar anything.' With three matches remaining, McCullum expressed hope for a better balance between bat and ball, after the first two Tests produced 11 centuries led by Indian captain Shubman Gill, who has already scored 585 runs in the series. "Shublime...": Sachin Tendulkar's Viral Post After Gill-Led India Create History At Edgbaston
Following India's record-breaking 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and ICC Chairman Jay Shah showered praise on the team for their clinical performance. India's triumph not only levelled the five-match series 1-1 but also marked their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The emphatic nature of the win drew widespread acclaim, particularly for skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 269 and 161 in the two innings to lead from the front, and Akash Deep, whose 10-wicket match haul was instrumental in dismantling England's batting. Tendulkar, in a post on his official X handle, applauded Gill's heroics. 'A Shublime innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory!' He also acknowledged the efforts of other key contributors, '@RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings. India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be one winner.' Tendulkar reserved special praise for Akash Deep, who claimed 4/88 and 6/99, breaking Chetan Sharma's record for the best match figures by an Indian in England. "What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled. Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root." He also lauded Mohammed Siraj for his athleticism. "P.S.: Enjoyed the catch taken by Mohammad "Jonty" Siraj." A Shublime innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings. India's approach was to take England out of this... — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) July 6, 2025 The victory at Edgbaston will go down as one of India's finest overseas Test performances, one that blended youthful brilliance with tactical mastery, and set the stage for an electrifying showdown at the Home of Cricket. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three sixes. Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer.
