Paralympian Simoné Kruger scoops gold, breaks African record at World Para Athletics Grand Prix

Eyewitness News04-07-2025
In March, the Paralympic gold medallist was awarded the Zanele Situ trophy for the best-performing athlete at the recent Winelands International Para Athletics Championships.
Earlier in the year, Kruger scooped the Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability at the Athletics South Africa Awards for the second year in a row.
Kruger represented South Africa at the Paris Paralympics and brought home one of South Africa's six medals from the 2024 Games.
She dominated the women's F38 discus at the Paralympics, breaking the Paralympic record and winning South Africa's second gold medal with a throw of 38.70m.
In 2025, there are only nine events of Grand Prix and these competitions were already held in cities such as Dubai, Paris and New Delhi, with Olomouc becoming the very first Czech host in history.
The Olomouc event is the last competition of this year's Grand Prix series and will be exclusively dedicated to women, an initiative of World Para Athletics to promote greater female participation in parasport.

Wheelchair rugby gains momentum in Krugersdorp

Ever seen rugby played at full speed – with wheelchairs? Now's your chance. A local initiative is bringing the high-impact, fast-paced sport of wheelchair rugby to the West Rand – and they want you to get involved. While many people know about rugby and the Paralympics, fewer are familiar with wheelchair rugby, a thrilling sport that's steadily gaining popularity in South Africa. In Krugersdorp, learners from the West Rand School for Disabilities have already taken up the challenge. The sport is governed by the South African Wheelchair Rugby Body and is being introduced locally through the efforts of Michelle and Johan van der Schyff, coaches from VDS Academy in Krugersdorp North. The couple believes in the life-changing potential of inclusive sport. 'It's more than a team sport; it's a community of athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters united by a shared vision, one that embraces diversity, celebrates strength, and places no limits on potential,' said Michelle. They've worked closely with learners from the West Rand School, some of whom have already represented the region at national events. Among them is Katlego Motjope, who earned a gold medal for athletics at the Toyota Paralympics. Johan explained that wheelchair rugby – originally called 'Murderball' and also known as 'Quad Rugby' – is a full-contact, fast-paced team sport designed for athletes with disabilities. 'Open to all genders, it combines elements of rugby, basketball, and handball. The objective is simple: carry the ball across the opposing team's try line to score points. Players use specially designed wheelchairs with reinforced frames and bumpers to navigate the court and make contact with opponents. A unique combination of strength, strategy, and teamwork, wheelchair rugby is an exhilarating sport that promotes inclusivity, competition, and athleticism,' he said. While there are currently no formal wheelchair rugby clubs in the area, VDS Academy and the West Rand School hope to change that by building awareness and interest in the sport. Verstappen begins new Red Bull era with Belgian sprint win

Max Verstappen welcomed new Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies to the race team on Saturday with an immaculate gift-wrapped triumph in the sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix. The 27-year-old Dutchman, who started from second on the grid, seized the lead on the opening lap and then resisted all threats from series leader Oscar Piastri who had to defend attacks from McLaren team-mate Lando Norris who finished third. It was a consummate performance from Verstappen who ran with a low downforce set-up to give him a straight-line speed advantage – for which he was congratulated by Mekies, appointed on July 9 to replace Red Bull's former boss Christian Horner who was dismissed unexpectedly after 20 years at the helm. "That worked out really well," said a delighted Verstappen after thanking Mekies on the team radio. "We got an opportunity at turn five and took it and then it was tough to keep those two behind. "It was cat and mouse with battery usage and I couldn't afford to make any mistakes, although I had one lock-up – it is so difficult to keep faster cars behind so it was all really at the limit. Not easy! But we did it." Mekies was equally satisfied. "Max was brilliant and all the guys did a great job," said the former boss of Reb Bull's 'B' team Racing Bulls. "He was under massive pressure and he made almost no mistakes and the team extracted everything from the car and the tyres." - Hamilton misery - The leading trio were separated by only 1.4 seconds at the finish, leaving Charles Leclerc a distant fourth for Ferrari, 10 seconds adrift, ahead of Haas's Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz of Williams. Piastri said: "I tried my best to snake through on the straight and not give too much tow (on the opening lap) but I didn't have enough straight-line speed. Still, this is a good result, good points and it's only the sprint. Yeah, but it's annoying I couldn't get past him. Norris said: "There wasn't a lot going on after, obviously, a bit of fun at the start and maybe I could have positioned myself a little better. But it was too difficult to get past Max. He drove a good race." Piastri's success in beating Norris, who on Sunday will seek a third consecutive Grand Prix win, extended his lead in the title race from eight points to nine. Piastri made a good start from pole position, but Verstappen showed he had greater straight-line speed with his 'skinny' rear wing set-up and after pulling alongside into Raidillon, he powered into the lead at Les Combes. Lewis Hamilton's miserable weekend continued as he toiled to advance after starting from 18th, following his spin at the chicane in Friday's sprint qualifying. On lap 12, Piastri moved within 0.3 seconds of Verstappen, but he was unable to execute a move on the run uphill from La Source while behind him Norris forced him to defend vigorously against his team-mate. McLaren's intra-team tussle did little to help either driver haul in Verstappen and he was in charge as he delivered his 12th sprint win to mark new boss Mekies' maiden race with Red Bull following Horner's exit.

Hollywood bling for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles

Organisers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics have named TV and film executive Peter Rice as head of ceremonies and content, marking the first time a major Hollywood figure will oversee the creative production of the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies. Rice, who has had senior leadership experience with 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company, will serve as lead executive producer for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Los Angeles. 'Our ceremonies will capture the energy, innovation and creativity of Los Angeles as well as the emotion that exists at the heart of every Olympic Games,' Rice told Reuters in an interview. 'The challenge is to welcome the world in a way that's not only memorable, but truly representative of LA's unique spirit — a city that stands at the crossroads of creativity, sports, and art.' The British American producer will shape the creative vision and oversee production of all four ceremonies at two iconic venues: the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the newly built SoFi Stadium. He said his experience with global sporting events like the Super Bowl, World Series, and Fifa World Cup has prepared him for the task, and emphasised that assembling a world-class production team was his priority. 'We need people with deep Olympic experience who can also tap into LA's creativity and energy,' he said, adding that the selection of a production company is expected by year's end. LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman expressed enthusiasm for Rice's appointment, citing their 25-year friendship and Rice's unique blend of business, technical, financial and creative skills. 'I knew he was our number one draft pick,' Wasserman said. Rice, whose projects have earned 51 Academy Award and 293 Emmy nominations, hopes the ceremonies reflect Southern California's spirit of optimism. 'It's a place where people go to pursue their dreams, and the Olympics are all about people's dreams,' he said. The LA Games open on July 14, 2028, with the Paralympic Games after in August. It will be the first time Los Angeles has hosted a Paralympics. Reuters
