‘The best team in Europe' – Liverpool's Mohamed Salah opens up on PSG following Champions League exit

Yahoo07-05-2025
Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah (32) is adamant the Reds have been knocked out of the Champions League by the best team in Europe, PSG. The Egyptian international has given a wide-ranging interview to France Football and has opened up on Liverpool's Champions League early exit despite topping the league phase standings. Arne Slot's Premier League champions were drawn to play Luis Enrique's Les Parisiens in the last-16. The Ligue 1 champions eventually prevailed on penalties, knocking out Liverpool on their own Anfield turf.
Salah has admitted that, despite losing the first leg at home with Harvey Elliott scoring an unlikely winner, PSG produced an outstanding performance. 'They were so unlucky, and we were so lucky', Salah said. 'Alisson produced his best-ever performance of his Liverpool career.' Unfortunately for Liverpool, Lady Luck favoured the visitors in the return leg. 'We struck the posts twice or three times. They did goalline clearances too. We were unlucky too.'

Salah could not tell which one of Liverpool or PSG was the more worthy team to go through, considering both teams dominated one game each. 'And then, you lose to penalties. Sometimes, it's your day. It was their day.' The Premier League season best goalscorer recalled that he shook the PSG players' hands to congratulate them, and cheered for them to win the Champions League. 'We were in great form all season, and in March alone, we hit a bit of a slump. And we ended up facing the best team in Europe at that time.'
Salah added that playing the Carabao Cup Final against Newcastle United just days after this gruelling Champions League defeat at home was 'bad timing.'

'Let's see what happens' - Virgil van Dijk hints at more Liverpool transfer business after blockbuster summer window

Liverpool are spending big this summer Have already signed Wirtz & Ekitike in attack Also linked with Rodrygo & Isak in the summer Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Rising German star Florian Wirtz and dynamic right-back Jeremie Frimpong have both joined from Bayer Leverkusen, while Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and French striker Hugo Ekitike, recently signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, have also been added to the roster. With the team's depth improving significantly, murmurs linking the club to Isak have only grown louder. WHAT VAN DIJK SAID Speaking after Liverpool's steamy pre-season fixture in Hong Kong, Van Dijk told the Anfield Wrap that the club might not be done just yet. "Let's see what happens for the rest of the transfer window," Van Dijk said. "I think we've made great additions to the team so far and I think they will definitely have the quality to play for Liverpool." THE BIGGER PICTURE Van Dijk also took the opportunity to commend the new faces for settling in quickly and adapting to Liverpool's demands. "For me, it's very important to see how they settle into the group and fit into the squad that we have and I think all of them have," he said. "There's Armin - the young goalie who just came from don't know where - and he's settled in pretty well. There's obviously Freddie, Giorgi, Flo, Jeremie, Hugo came today of course. Everyone has to work hard, we're all in this together and that's the main thing." DID YOU KNOW? Among the new arrivals, Ekitike has joined Liverpool with a reputation as one of Europe's brightest attacking talents and expectations around him are understandably high. Van Dijk was quick to welcome him with some light-hearted humour and added: "He's just flown in, but we'll probably have to fine him for wearing the wrong kit. No, it's good to have him here. Now he has to work his socks off and be important for us and that's enough." WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL? As speculation continues off the pitch, Liverpool's immediate focus turns to their next pre-season assignment. The Reds are set to take on Italian giants AC Milan this Saturday at the Kai Tak Sports Park Stadium in Hong Kong. The match will serve as another test for the new signings and give fans a closer look at how manager Arne Slot intends to shape the team ahead of the 2024–25 campaign.

Fabrizio Romano confirms interest in €50m-rated forward

Liverpool have already conducted a record-shattering summer transfer window with the promise of even MORE to come. We've seen Florian Wirtz arrive in a British record deal. The German cost £100m upfront and that fee could rise to £116m if all add-ons are activated. Then there's Hugo Ekitike. LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now The France under-21 striker has come on board from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m fee. But Liverpool have also been active in other positions - adding Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili. It takes their total spend to over £250m and Richard Hughes is not done there. Alexander Isak remains in the club's sights and we could also see a centre-back deal done before the end of the window. Diaz leaving opens a space in the Liverpool squad Much will depend on outgoings at this point. It's no secret Liverpool are looking for buyers for Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Diaz is the subject of intense rumours linking him with Bayern Munich. Should the German side get close to Liverpool's valuation then he will be off. Nunez, meanwhile, has been spoken about as a potential signing for the Saudi Pro League. If he goes then Liverpool should be able to fund a move for Isak. A gap will open up on the left wing if Diaz joins Bayern. And with Liverpool flush with an extra €80m or so, the club will have the option to fund a replacement. Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier in the week that Bayern had got Malick Fofana on the list as an alternative to Diaz. €50m Fofana on the Liverpool list The Lyon winger, 20, has been one of the breakout stars of the last 12 months and whoever ends up signing the Belgian will be acquiring an elite winger who could star for a decade or more. Now that there appears to be an accord in sight between Liverpool and Bayern for Diaz, it means that €50m to €60m-rated Fofana is a suitor down. And now the Italian transfer supremo has claimed that Liverpool have got him on the list as a potential Diaz replacement. Romano: Liverpool appreciate Fofana "Don't forget Malick Fofana, who is a player appreciated at Bayern Munich — in case they can't sign Luis Díaz,' he revealed in a YouTube video. 'That's an exclusive story from the start of the week. 'He's also appreciated by Liverpool, but not the only option in the winger position. There are several clubs interested in Malick Fofana, and Liverpool are considering several options." © IMAGO - Malick Fofana Liverpol

Manchester United vs West Ham: Friendly prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Manchester United are back in action this weekend as their preparations for the new campaign continue in the USA against a familiar foe. Ruben Amorim's side take on fellow Premier League outfit West Ham, as part of the Premier League Summer Series tournament in their second pre-season fixture of the summer. Coming off last weekend's goalless draw in Sweden against Leeds, there is plenty for the Portuguese head coach to work on and his options have been boosted by the addition of Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroon international is with the Man Utd squad stateside after completing his £65million move from Brentford at the beginning of the week. West Ham have a new signing of their own to parade too after sealing a deal for Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer following the full-back's departure from Southampton. Graham Potter's side began their preparations for the new season with a comfortable win over Grasshopper Club Zurich last Saturday. Date, kick-off time and venue Manchester United vs West Ham is scheduled for a 12am BST kick-off on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The match will take place at the MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. Where to watch Manchester United vs West Ham TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports. Coverage starts at 11pm BST on Sky Sports Premier League, Main Event and Ultra HDR on Saturday, July 26, 2025 ahead of the overnight kick-off. Live stream: Viewers can also stream the game live on MUTV. A 12-month subscription costs £29.99. Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport's live blog! Manchester United vs West Ham team news Manchester United's latest marquee signing Bryan Mbeumo could be in line for his first appearance in red. Andre Onana is ruled out for much of pre-season after he sustained a hamstring injury. Otherwise, United are at full-strength, but Lisandro Martinez, who is part of the travelling squad, will not play as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. As for West Ham, they have included summer signings Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf in their 29-man travelling party. Edson Alvarez will join up with his team-mates after being granted a longer break following his exploits with Mexico at the Gold Cup earlier this summer. However, Crysencio Summerville has not travelled as he continues his recovery from injury. Manchester United vs West Ham prediction Man Utd lacked a cutting edge against Leeds last week, so it will be interesting to see the approach Amorim takes for this one. The Portuguese head coach will have had an extra week to drill his philosophies and ideas into his squad, and the addition of Mbeumo means he is likely to have two of his first-choice front three on show. Naturally, both managers will experiment and use the game to build up match sharpness, but United's squad should have enough to get the win. Man United to win, 2-1. Head to head (h2h) history and results The Hammers won both Premier League meetings against the Red Devils last season, including a 2-0 success at Old Trafford as recently as May.
