Tavatavanawai among five new caps in All Blacks squad for France series
Tavatavanawai's power and pace along with his ability to turn the ball over at the breakdown earned him a place in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific dream team but he might find it tougher to break into the New Zealand midfield.

Coach Scott Robertson has brought Jordie Barrett straight back into his squad after a sabbatical in Ireland with Leinster and also recalled powerhouse Quinn Tupaea after three injury-blighted seasons.
"It's always a challenge to pick the best players in the country," Robertson said.
"You look through the whole season, you look for reliability, the ability to keep turning up, their skill sets under pressure, how they complement the group.
"It's a hell of a team, just congratulations to those debutants, their families, and who supported them to get here."
Tavatavanawai said it had been an emotional moment for him and his family when he heard that his dream of an All Blacks call-up had been fulfilled.
"It means everything," he said. "I left (home) when I was 16. My brother and sister were about 13 and I've missed a crucial part of their growing up. All that sacrifice comes up to this moment so it's pretty special.
"I think that's why mum pretty much straight away jumped in my arms."
Flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi and hooker Brodie McAlister are two other experienced players who have earned their first call-ups in their late 20s on the back of standout domestic seasons.
"Du'Plessis is the ultimate story of what it takes to keep working and absolute desire to be an All Black," forwards coach Jason Ryan said of the 28-year-old openside.
"He's got the balance right. He's learned a lot about himself learning Wellington and the Hurricanes. We know he's ready."
There was no place in the squad for openside Dalton Papali'i or blindside Ethan Blackadder with Kirifi one of only five loose forwards selected along with Samipeni Finau, Ardie Savea, Wallace Sititi and Luke Jacobson.
Jacobson picked up a knock in the Super Rugby final and uncapped number eight Christian Lio-Willie will join the squad as injury cover along with winger Emoni Narawa, who will make up the numbers while Anton Lienert-Brown completes his recuperation from a broken collarbone.
Powerful loosehead prop Ollie Norris and Netherlands-born lock Fabian Holland round out the quintet of uncapped players named by Robertson.
New Zealand host France in the opening test in Dunedin on July 5 before further clashes in Wellington and Hamilton on the following weekends.

Leclerc leads final British GP practice for Ferrari at Silverstone
FERRARI sent McLaren a reminder of their pace in final practice for the British Grand Prix on Saturday with Charles Leclerc fastest. The Monaco-born driver lapped the Silverstone circuit on an overcast, gusty and much cooler afternoon than Friday with a best time of one minute 25.498 seconds. McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri was second quickest, 0.068 seconds slower, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen third. The session was twice red flagged, once when Oliver Bearman's Haas shed some bodywork and in the final seconds when Gabriel Bortoleto spun on a kerb and bounced across the grass with the car's front left suspension smashed. The final stoppage put paid to anyone trying to improve on Leclerc's time, including Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton who ended up only 11th. Hamilton had been quicker than Leclerc in the first two sectors before aborting the final one after the red flags were waved as a result of Bearman's debris on track. McLaren's Lando Norris, 15 points adrift of Piastri after 11 of 24 rounds, was fourth fastest with Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda fifth. Bearman, who ended up sixth, crashed in a bizarre accident at the end while entering the pitlane -- smashing the nose and front wing when he hit the barriers and blaming cold brakes. Alex Albon was seventh for Williams, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar and teammate Liam Lawson completing the top 10. Aston Martin said neither of their drivers had managed to do a representative lap on the fastest soft tyre due to the red flags. Qualifying for Sunday's race, Hamilton's first at home in Ferrari colours, follows later in the afternoon. Rugby-All Blacks hold off depleted France 31-27 in Dunedin thriller
(Reuters) -Will Jordan scored a try in each half and Beauden Barrett kicked to perfection as the All Blacks overcame three cancelled tries to claim a nervous 31-27 win over France in the series-opener in Dunedin on Saturday. Fielding only three players from the Six Nations title-deciding win over Scotland, the depleted French gave Scott Robertson's team a huge scare in an entertaining match at sold-out Forsyth-Barr stadium. But a late Barrett penalty proved enough for the All Blacks to hold on, snapping a three-match losing streak against Les Bleus. "Just a typical test match against the French for us," said Jordan, who was denied a hat-trick try by the television match official (TMO). "A couple of errors cost us ... But we showed good composure to finish it off in the end there." The All Blacks lost Sevu Reece to a head-knock less than a minute in when the winger clattered into a French hip, forcing Robertson into a backline rejig and Damian McKenzie to play at fullback off the bench. The French had a better start, with debutant flyhalf Joris Segonds booting a penalty in the seventh minute after winger Gabin Villiere won a turnover penalty. France charged out to a 10-0 lead as fullback Theo Attissogbe made a break down the left wing, centre-captain Gael Fickou drove the ball to the line and number eight Mickael Guillard crossed by the right post. Chastened, the All Blacks hit back hard. A Jordie Barrett try was denied by a knock-on the buildup but minutes later his brothers combined for their first legal try. Terengganu sign fiery French striker
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu today unveiled their newest weapon for the 2025-2026 M-League season — the French-born striker Yann Kevin Mabella. The 29-year-old is fresh off a red-hot season with Racing FC Union Luxembourg, where he netted 22 goals in 29 appearances. The 1.83m Mabella, who has signed a one-year deal with the Turtles, said: "I think my style of play is about intensity and energy. I bring a lot of speed, I make runs, I spin, I defend when needed." Mabella, whose birthday is Feb 22, will wear the No. 11 jersey for Terengganu. "My birthday is on the 22nd, but that number isn't available, so I'll go with 11, two times 11 is 22," quipped Mabella who has also represented Congo, including in Africa Cup qualifiers.
