IGNIS 3R technology to remediate landfills

Deputy Chief Minister Il Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the State Government has launched a comprehensive rehabilitation project at the Sg Sibuga landfill, employing cutting-edge IGNIS 3R technology. 'This initiative represents a significant shift towards sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management,' said Joachim, who is also State Local Government and Housing it Minister. He said the rehabilitation goes beyond simply addressing a long-standing problem. 'It's a strategic investment in Sabah's future.' He highlighted the significant health, safety and land-use impacts of these neglected sites, calling them a 'legacy burden' that has plagued the State for years. 'The choice of technology was carefully considered, rejecting less suitable options like incinerators and waste-to-energy plants due to cost, logistical and feasibility concerns,' he said. Joachim stressed the importance of a long-term solution, avoiding quick fixes that would burden future generations. The selection of IGNIS 3R, a technology championed by Sabah-born CEO Dr Davina Markus of SG Ignis (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, underscores the Government's commitment to local talent and innovation. Joachim also expressed pride in empowering Sabahans to lead a world-class initiative. The technology's ability to remediate old landfills without the need for waste sorting, open burning, or leaving behind soil contaminants, was a key factor in its selection. While acknowledging it's not a perfect system, Joachim presented it as the best available solution. The project's success hinges on collaboration, he said, and also called for full support from local authorities, technical departments and the community to position the Sg Sibuga project as a model for future waste management initiatives across Sabah. 'This strategic investment reflects the Sabah Government's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development, showcasing a proactive approach to addressing long-standing environmental challenges. GRS treating state resources as personal property, says Sabah Umno
KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government is facing mounting criticism over the alleged secretive issuance of mineral mining licences and attempts to distort the state's oil and gas history. Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir (pic) said public trust had been betrayed, warning that Sabah's resources were being managed 'like a family inheritance' rather than state assets belonging to the people. 'The people's trust is the highest principle in any democracy. Unfortunately, under the current GRS administration, that trust has been blatantly betrayed by political greed,' said Suhaimi, who is also the Libaran MP, in a statement on Tuesday (July 22). He took issue with recent remarks that Sabah's oil and gas sector only began developing after the establishment of SMJ Energy (SMJE) in 2021, pointing out that the RM54bil Sabah Integrated Oil and Gas Project (SIOGP) was launched in 2014 under the Barisan Nasional administration. 'GRS leaders are attempting to rewrite history,' he said. Suhaimi also questioned whether the much-publicised investments into Sabah were truly benefitting ordinary Sabahans or merely enriching political cronies. 'GRS often boasts about multi-billion ringgit investments into Sabah, but the people deserve to know: how much of that truly goes to companies owned by genuine Sabahans?' he said. He said it was unacceptable that the state government remained silent on basic public demands such as clean water, better roads, and stable electricity — yet was swift and quiet when it came to awarding mining licences. 'When it comes to mining licences, the government suddenly becomes swift, rushed, and silent. Is this the real priority of GRS?' he asked. 'Sabah is not the private estate of politicians. It is the people's property.' Suhaimi said Sabah was now in the midst of a leadership crisis, adding that true leaders would not trade the state's land and dignity for political survival. 'The people of Sabah deserve to know who profits and who approved it, because this state is not a personal fiefdom to be controlled by political elites,' he said. 'Do not ever sell out Sabah for personal gain,' he added.

Fund to strengthen Sabah creative industry

KOTA KINABALU (July 22): Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil handed over the letters of acceptance for the Creative Content Fund in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday. The ceremony, which was also witnessed by the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, symbolises the commitment of the MADANI Government through the Communications Ministry and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) in supporting the development of the local creative content industry, particularly in Borneo. A total of six production companies from Sabah received offer letters under the Programme Fund, amounting to RM1.15 million, specifically for the production of high-quality super-telefilms in the national language or local ethnic languages. They are D Smart Borneoans Production Sdn Bhd, Empayar Biru (M) Sdn Bhd, Nautica Production Sdn Bhd, Dreamer Visual Sdn Bhd, Del Teraju Sdn Bhd, ONTV Production Sdn Bhd and Telan Bulan Sdn Bhd. This programme aims to enhance local broadcast content and drive strategic collaborations between industry players and broadcasters such as Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and private media outlets. The event also saw the awarding of a Post-Production Fund worth nearly RM240,000 to a Sabah-based production company, aimed at strengthening technical aspects of post-filming such as visual effects, colour grading, and Dolby Atmos. The handover of these letters of acceptance demonstrates the MADANI Government's determination, through the Communications Ministry, to support artists and creators across the nation in line with the aspiration to position Malaysia as a regional hub for creative content. Also present were the Secretary-General of the Communications Ministry, Datuk Mohamad Fauzi bin Md Isa; FINAS Chairman Dato' Hans Isaac; FINAS Chief Executive Officer Dato' Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib; and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Izelan Basar.

3R waste technology to rehabilitate Sandakan landfill
Davina SANDAKAN (July 22): Sandakan is set to make a leap forward in sustainable waste management with the launch of Sabah's first landfill rehabilitation project using globally patented 3R technology. IGNIS SG (Sabah) Sdn Bhd has officially signed a 12-year concession agreement, with an option to extend for another eight years, with the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS). The agreement allows the company to rehabilitate the long-overdue Sungai Sibuga solid waste landfill, often referred to as a dead landfill. IGNIS SG Executive Director Dr Davina Marcus said the initiative addresses the mounting waste management challenges faced by Sandakan. 'This is something I've planned for a long time. I've seen with my own eyes how landfill sites are growing into mountains of unmanaged waste. The space keeps expanding, and I believe it's time for a new solution, one that tackles the problem and contributes to environmental sustainability without adding to the waste pile,' she said. Speaking during the launch of the Sungai Sibuga Landfill Rehabilitation Project on Tuesday, Davina said IGNIS SG has been given exclusive rights to develop and implement the rehabilitation works using IGNIS 3R technology, patented globally by its parent company, Ignis Environment Initiatives Sdn Bhd. 'This project will not only resolve long-standing waste disposal issues but also drive Sandakan towards green transformation,' she said. According to Davina, the IGNIS 3R system offers a comprehensive, non-incineration and non-toxic treatment process, supporting Malaysia's Net-Zero Emission 2050 target and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. 'The technology enables processing of buried waste without prior segregation, using a closed-loop zero waste-to-landfill approach. It also allows for land recovery for future use, and the extraction of reusable materials from old waste.' She further explained that the project is fully funded under a Private Financing Initiative (PFI) by IGNIS SG (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, with support from EXIM Bank Malaysia, without financial backing from the state government or local authorities. 'This shows the financial sector's confidence in the project's viability and the effectiveness of IGNIS 3R technology on a commercial scale,' she added. Currently, the project is in its initial implementation phase, with site works and mobilisation of IGNIS 3R machinery underway. The Sandakan 3R Waste Rehabilitation Project is expected to be physically completed by July 2026. 'My hopes for this landfill project are very high. I want this to inspire others to commit to protecting the environment and freeing up landfill capacity that's becoming increasingly saturated with waste. 'I also hope this project will help reduce public health risks linked to environmental pollution, add value through land reuse, and contribute towards improving Sandakan's image as a city,' Davina said.
