Major Poundland loyalty scheme change amid closure concerns

Daily Record28-05-2025
It has be predicted that 200 Poundland stores could end up closed as the owner of the discount chain looks for a new buyer.
Poundland is known for providing their customers with everyday essentials for low prices. From cleaning products to holiday must-haves, the discount chain is a go-to store for shoppers looking for a bargain.
However, with the threat of closure looming, Poundland has now made a major change to their loyalty scheme after listening to customer feedback. The chain will now be scrapping its exclusive lower prices for shoppers who are part of their membership scheme.

Shoppers used to be able to get access to cheaper prices on certain products thanks to Poundland Perks, but this major shake-up means this bonus - which is similar to Tesco Clubcard Prices and Sainsbury's Nectar Prices - will become a thing of the past.

However, the Mirror reports that shoppers will still be able to collect points on the money that they spend while in store. Loyalty scheme members get one point for every 1p they spend on selected items, and once they reach 5,000 points, they will receive a voucher worth £1.
A Poundland spokesperson has said: "We've listened to your feedback and from 21 May 2025, the app will now be changing to points and prizes.
"That means we'll be offering all customers our very best pricing on the shelf and online – without having to add Poundland Perks prices found in the app.
"Of course, you can continue to earn points as you shop at Poundland in store and online when you scan your Poundland Perks app at checkout – and you'll still be able to play our weekly Win it Wednesday competition to win points and prizes.
"Once you've accumulated 5,000 points you'll be able to convert those points to a £1 voucher to redeem In-store and online, by turning the toggle on before the 15th of every month."

This shake up to Poundland Perks comes after the owner of the discount chain, Pepco Group, announced that it has decided to sell the chain.
Earlier this week in a financial update, the Pepco Group told investors that the company "continues to actively explore separation options for Poundland business with an exit expected by end of FY25".

This means that Poundland expects to make and accept a deal by the end of the current financial year. Therefore by September, the parent company hopes the discount chain will be under new command.
While it has been reported that there are investment firms and private equity groups interested in buying the business, the Telegraph has also claimed that up to 200 Poundland stores could potentially face closure.

Currently, Poundland has over 820 across the UK and Ireland - where it is known as Dealz - and it chain employs more than 16,000 people.
Despite the massive size of this discount chain, it was revealed this week that the business' revenues have dropped by 6.5 per cent to €985million (£830million) for the six months to March, in comparison to the year before.
Over the period, the brand suffered "challenges across all categories" and had 18 net store closures. It is now predicted that Poundland is due to deliver earnings of between 0 and €20million (£16.9 million) compared with previous guidance of €50million and €70million.
By contrast, the wider Pepco Group saw total revenues grow by 4.3% to €3.34billion (£2.82billion) in the half-year.

Poundland issues statement as shoppers complain about empty shelves

Budget high street chain Poundland has hit out at reports that big suppliers are changing their terms as new owners look for approval for big shake-up Discount chain Poundland was forced to deny claims suppliers are 'spooked' despite shoppers being met with gaps on shelves. Reports say the high street firm is struggling to restock after a number of big suppliers allegedly toughened-up their terms. It comes after the struggling retailer was sold last month for less than £1 and its new owner swiftly proposed a shake-up that would result in the closure of 68 stores. ‌ US investment firm Gordon Brothers is seeking court approval for a restructuring plan that would also include rent reductions on other shops. Warehouses in Darton in Barnsley and Bilston, West Mids, are planned to shut early next year. The firm, which has 800 shops, indicated dozens more could close in the coming years. The overhaul is expected to put more than 1,300 jobs at risk. ‌ According to The Times, suppliers such as Procter & Gamble and Nestle have 'tightened credit lines and payment windows amid uncertainty over the retailer's future', with some left 'spooked'. They are said to have shortened window being between stock being delivered and the deadline for being paid. The Mirror visited a Poundland branch in west London and found a number of gaps on shelves, including limited stocks of Sensodyne toothpaste, made by Haleon, and Ultimate Blends conditioner by Garnier, plus some cat and bird food. ‌ Poundland hit back, with a spokesman claiming 'most retailers have gaps from time to time and no doubt Poundland is no different, but there are no supply issues at Poundland related in any way to its current recovery programme.' The Times found products made by Procter & Gamble, including Lenor fabric conditioner, Febreze sprays, Oral-B toothpaste and Always feminine hygiene products, were understocked in stores across London. But Poundland insisted Procter & Gamble had 'never placed any restrictions on Poundland supply and Nestle actually increased their limits on Wednesday.' ‌ They went on: 'It's ironic because on Wednesday Poundland briefed hundreds of suppliers in Walsall about the recovery plans and received very strong support. It's very firmly business as usual despite the restructure plans. There has been no tightening of any limits since the acquisition by Gordon Brothers.' Poundland's previous owner, Pepco Group, put the chain up for sale in the face of falling sales and profits. Following last month's takeover, shopworkers' union Usdaw asked Gordon Brothers for urgent talks to clarify its plan for the business, and what it might mean for its 16,000 staff. Gordon Brothers pledged £80million of investment and will set out restructuring plans soon. Pepco will retain a minority stake in Poundland.

I purchased a Ring doorbell from Amazon but it's now nearly 40% cheaper

A month or so ago we decided to take the plunge and finally invest in a video doorbell to beef up security and avoid those all important missed deliveries. After a quick evening of research on the internet, we decided to go with the majority and grab ourselves a Ring Video Doorbell. Once the decision had been made, I could not wait to hear that familiar chime and join the happy throng of folk who can answer their doorbell while standing in the queue at Sainsbury's. While we might be late to the party with the whole Ring doorbell thing, I felt I needed to order straight away. Looking on Amazon I found the holy grail of video doorbell chic - a non-wired, battery powered unit that could be installed in a jiffy complete with a internal unit that sends out those magnificent chimes. The Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro + Chime was promptly ordered an delivered next day, but despite the initial thrill, I quickly realised why I should have waited - because it's now a lot cheaper to buy. The highly anticipated Amazon Prime Day deals are currently live, running until Friday, July 11, at 11:59 pm. Offering up to 70% off thousands of products across all departments, including tech, Amazon Prime members could save a small fortune of lots of different things. The Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro + Chime is a really good example of an excellent Amazon deal. Now with 39% off - the doorbell and indoor speaker set has been reduced from £229.98 to £139.99 - which is precisely £89.99 less than we paid. While it is true that had we waited, we would have saved money, the Ring has still been a big hit. The wire-free doorbell is designed for quick and simple installation, with most users like us able to get it up and running in just a few minutes. It delivers 1440p HD colour video with night vision, so we can clearly see who is outside, during the day or night. The Ring Video Doorbell bundle has £89.99 off RRP and requirements no installation I must admit, I found the camera much clearer than I thought it would be, and the expanded view of 1536p HD Video lets you see more of whoever stops by. It also features 3D motion detection and bird's eye zones that pinpoints when and where a motion event begins in an aerial map view. With HD live view and two-way talk, you can speak to people in real time, which is a life saver for communicating with delivery drivers, neighbours and other visitors while we are out. The bundle that we purchased also comes with the Ring Chime. The plug-in device connects to existing Ring Doorbells and Cams to deliver real-time audio alerts when motion is detected or the doorbell is pressed. It plugs into a standard power socket, connects via Wi-Fi and features customised chime tones, volume and modes through the Ring app. No matter the upfront price of the doorbell, it is worth noting that Ring devices require a monthly subscription for full functionality, starting from £4.99 per month. For buyers who would prefer to skip the ongoing cost, the Tapo C500 1080p Full HD Outdoor Pan/Tilt Security Camera reduced from £69.99 to £34. It boasts over 20,000 reviews and is praised for its strong battery life and traditional, security camera style simple setup that doesn't require a subscription. Alternatively the Blink Video Doorbell is another strong option for doorbell security. With 45% off for Amazon Prime Day, prices start from £27.54 for the camera only option that buyers have called "easy to set up" and "great value for money." Shoppers who can't wait for delivery, can save 20% on the Arlo Essential 4-in-1 2K Smart Video Doorbell & Chime at Argos. Now £169.99, the 2k video package is similar to Ring with night vision, 4-6 months battery life and a plug in chime, as well as cloud storage and saved video library with subscription. Amazon shoppers who have also invested in the Ring Doorbell setup like we did have given it a 4.3 out of five-star rating. One buyer who was a little less impulsive than me, said: "I am so happy with this Ring Doorbell. Just what I needed, was just waiting for it to go down in price before buying and it did, It Is better than expected. The pictures are very clear. Very simple to set up. Highly Recommend." Another added: "Absolutely love the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Pro! From the moment I installed it (which was super easy and took less than 10 minutes), I could see a huge difference in the quality and performance compared to previous models. The video is incredibly clear, even at night, and the two-way audio is crisp and responsive." Another said: "This model is a game changer for home security." Not all buyers where quite so impressed however. One disappointed shopper left a three-star review that said: "Good picture and sound but minimum £50 a year for contract to make it marginally better than a cheaper video doorbell. Had to buy an extra battery for continuous running. Battery life is only mediocre in comparison to other batteries in today's market." Overall, most Amazon shoppers seem to be just as impressed with it as we are. Another five-star review added: "I love my Ring doorbell. I want another front door so I can get another Ring door bell. Only joking but it is great." Shoppers need to be Prime subscribers to take advantage of the very best doorbell deals and other bargains.
