In a statement on Tuesday night, Raso said he was humbled by what Matunuck Oyster Bar represents to so many people.
'While we are heartbroken that our doors will be temporarily closed, we are committed to opening them back up and welcoming guests back to our tables as soon as possible,' Raso said.
Raso started digging littlenecks in Point Judith Pond when he was 12, and grew up harvesting shellfish, eel, bull-raking clams, and scuba diving for steamers.

Over the years since it's opening, Matunuck made additions: a second floor, a patio, and outdoor seating. It's also become the number one restaurant destination in South County, according to Louise Bishop, the president and chief executive officer of the South County Tourism Council. Each year, the restaurant and farm now employ more than 300 full-time and seasonal employees.
For some locals, it's the place to go after the beach to munch on lobster rolls and watch a setting sun while sitting on the patio.

'Can't even count how many times I've been,'
For others, it's a special occasion spot for celebrations.
Matunuck was the location of the first date Caitlyn Gemma had with her now husband. They married in 2023. 'He fell in love with Rhode Island and we live here now,' she said.
Magaziner went to Matunuck to celebrate his 40th birthday with his young family.
'It's been our go-to date spot every July 4th for the last six years,' said Jonathan Kirk, the former owner of the now-shuttered
Liz Colleran and her husband hosted a special dinner at Matunuck after they were married. When they moved to Indiana, they continued to purchase Matunuck's oysters.
To most who have been, it's more than just a restaurant. It's famously 'set a new standard for dining,' said Dadekian.

While he could not be reached for an interview, Raso said in his statement that he has heard from patrons from Rhode Island and beyond, who have 'reached out... with selfless offers to help.'
Raso 'is a decent, decent man. I'm saddened by this,' said Reed, who said he texted Raso as soon as he heard the news of the fire on Tuesday morning.
'If he calls, we'll be there,' added Reed. 'If he needs someone to come down and shovel some of the cinders away, I can do that.'

ATO issues warning to millions over $4,400 tax deduction 'mistake'

Millions of Aussies who use their car for work will be looking to claim a tax deduction for car expenses on this year's tax return. But the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning people not to make this common mistake. If you use your car for work, you can claim a deduction using the 'cents per kilometre method' or the "logbook method'. The 'cents per kilometre method' is a more straightforward calculation and allows you to claim up to 5,000 kilometres per year at a rate of 88 cents per kilometre, meaning a maximum deduction of $4,400. An ATO spokesperson told Yahoo Finance a "mistake" car owners made was claiming expenses using this method without keeping all the necessary records. 'For example, you could record your work-related trips using a diary or the myDeductions tool in the ATO app.' If you choose to use the logbook method instead, you'll also need to keep additional travel make up the bulk of work-related expense claims, with 3.6 million people claiming about $10.3 billion in car expenses in the 2023-24 income year. At $4,400, the 'cents per kilometre' tax deduction is one of the highest that you can claim without receipts and also one of the most heavily scrutinised ones. Tax Invest Accounting director Belinda Raso told Yahoo Finance a lot of people tended to think it was an automatic deduction and didn't understand when they could and couldn't claim. 'You've got, on one hand, a lot of people that just go and automatically claim the 5,000 kilometers. But also, on the other hand, you've got people that don't realise when they can actually claim it," she said. 'It is important that you do track where you've gone because it's such a good deduction, $4,400 worth, the ATO does look at it. 'Even though you don't need a logbook, if you are pulled up for an audit, you do need to substantiate where you've gone, how often you've gone, how far you've gone and why you've gone there.' To claim the tax deduction, you need to be travelling for work purposes. That means travel from your home to the office doesn't count, except in limited exceptions. Raso said you must be going to a different location from where you normally go. 'It could be somewhere for training, it could be somewhere for meetings, it could be going to a different site, a different location, a different branch. You could even be running errands for your employer,' she said. 'The important thing with this is it mustn't be on your way home or on your way to work, so it must be during your work day.' URI's historic Alton Jones campus to reopen to the public

Enter Email Sign Up The university's Board of Trustees approved the plan on Friday, after reaching the 10-year agreement with DEM, according to a Gray on Monday acknowledged the arrangement is atypical for the state agency, and there's a reason for that: 'It's a really unique piece of property,' he said. 'You could probably hear in my voice, I'm super excited about this,' Gray said in an interview. 'It's a huge opportunity.' Advertisement Under the agreement, DEM will invest in important infrastructure and handle day-to-day maintenance, and will protect natural resources on the campus, including forest and dam management. In return, DEM may use the property for 'administrative functions, educational programming, programs and camps, agricultural activities, veterinary care and animal rehabilitation, wildlife and ecological research, and expanded public access,' URI said. The university, meanwhile, will still use the campus for education and research. The Whispering Pines Conference Center is not part of the agreement, as it is 'reserved for use by URI or a third party,' university officials said. 'The W. Alton Jones Campus is a vital natural resource that holds significant value not just for URI, but for our state and for communities across Rhode Island,' URI President Marc Parlange said in a statement. 'This partnership reflects our dedication to revitalizing the campus, while preserving its ecological and educational value for all Rhode Islanders.' In an email to the Globe, Dawn Bergantino, a university spokesperson, wrote the campus will reopen to the public 'as soon as feasible,' noting that 'to ensure safe public access, RIDEM will first complete necessary maintenance and forest management work.' According to Gray, DEM has to modernize space on the campus for its staff, and complete some plumbing and electrical work. The agency also has to complete a forest management plan, which will range from forest fire prevention and preparedness to identifying critical habitat areas on the property, he said. Rhode Islanders will have a chance to return beginning sometime this fall, he said. Public access to the campus came to a halt five years ago amid significant costs of forest- and natural-resource management and facility maintenance, although URI faculty and students have continued to conduct research there, according to school officials. The COVID-19 pandemic also exacerbated financial challenges. Advertisement Abby Benson, vice president for administration and finance at URI, said in a statement the university always intended to reopen the site to the public. 'It was important to us to find a financially viable solution to restore public access to the property ​​in a manner that supports our mission as a land-grant institution and preserves ongoing research and educational uses,' Benson said. In November, URI initiated a request for information to find potential future uses for the space, including seeking partners who could 'manage and revitalize the property,' while still allowing for continued research and education there. The campus is primarily wooded, but has three developed areas, which include the Environmental Education Center, Whispering Pines Conference Center, and a farm, according to Gray. DEM has several visions for what it will eventually offer the public at the site, from courses to hiking and fishing, he said. The department, for instance, already provides training for hunting and fishing, but those programs haven't been offered in 'really ideal locations,' he said. 'This is a much… more accessible place,' Gray said. 'It's a huge upgrade in terms of our delivery of those courses and it'll allow us to work with a lot of the other entities in Rhode Island that also offer environmental camps and education programs for youth.' DEM will also probably put out a request for proposals to find a farmer to once again manage the farm on the campus, he said. 'The other thing is, part of DEM's operation is we have the state veterinarian. So every once in a while, we have an opportunity or an obligation to house animals, and it might be a rescue situation, it might be a quarantine situation – that kind of thing,' Gray said. 'And right now we don't have any place to do that, so this would give us a place to do that.'
