Dairy exports vital for NZ economy despite butter price concerns: Dr Jacqueline Rowarth

The same might well apply to your house.
Downsizing parents have been known to assist their children into the family home while choosing somewhere less expensive for themselves.
But if an outlander said they would give you twice the money of the valuation of your home, would you then accept it in the knowledge your children would ultimately be better off?
There could be $1 million extra to spend on whatever you and they need, want or desire – a different house and a car, holiday or whatever.
This is the philosophy behind Fonterra's approach to selling products from the dairy industry.
A considerable amount of time and energy is spent marketing and positioning to achieve the best price possible for the product.
The money keeps people in employment, funds repairs, maintenance and infrastructure development, and also funds research into new products.
The bulk of the export income goes to the dairy farmers so that they, too, can employ people and create vibrant businesses, while also funding farm research through their levy contribution to industry good bodies such as DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb NZ.
The income streams give everybody more choice, including the Government through tax-take investment.
Every dairy dollar created by New Zealand cows and sold offshore generates over seven times the value in New Zealand and increases employment by over eight Full Time Equivalent positions.
The $27 billion in export dollars is $5400 for every New Zealander, which multiplied by seven is almost $40,000.
That is just for dairy.
It is a lot of packs of butter, or cheese, and certainly litres of milk.
The Government's concept of doubling the value of exports underpins its desire (and New Zealand's need) for improved health, education and infrastructure, as well as police, environment, and every other group important to New Zealand's functioning as a developed nation.

If the export income increases, New Zealanders are better off.
Despite this, there has been yet another outcry over the price of butter, with statements that it should be cheaper because New Zealand produces so much of it.
Prices come down when supply exceeds demand, or if the product is being used as a loss leader by the seller.
Vegetables and fruit tend to be cheaper in peak harvest season because supply is plentiful.
The Food Price Index shows increases during winter and drought (and in the aftermath of cyclones).
There is no glut in dairy products – they are in demand.
Loss leaders are a different issue.
They are an inducement to customers to enter a store to purchase the product at a price which might be below market cost.
The goal is to stimulate sales of other, more profitable goods or services.
The store accepts the 'loss' on the chosen product on the basis that it will make more money on sales overall, as customers are led into the shop…
Inevitably, this leads to a discussion on supermarkets and whether the current structure allows sufficient choice for New Zealand customers.
Supermarkets have borne the brunt of complaints about rising food prices (overlooking the impact of an increase in wages, power, rates and compliance costs, and the fact about 40% of food is imported).
An article published last year showed each New Zealand supermarket was generating over 40% more revenue than US supermarkets.
But each New Zealand supermarket was also serving more people.
The article suggested having more competition between supermarket companies would reduce the revenue (implication - profit - which is not necessarily the case) for each supermarket.
What was not apparent was that by serving more people, the New Zealand supermarkets were offering a service for less than that being charged in other countries.
From the data, it appeared that in the UK and Australia, the revenue per person was 40% and 23%, respectively, higher than in New Zealand.
When comparing prices here with those overseas, the role of GST, which adds 15% to the purchase price, is often overlooked.
Further, unlike farmers elsewhere, New Zealand farmers do not receive Government support (taxpayer money).
In many cases in the northern hemisphere, the support is what keeps the business solvent while ensuring domestic food security and a managed landscape.
Discussing butter prices, Gareth Kiernan, chief forecaster at Infometrics, has explained that the alternatives are subsidies (which have to be paid for with tax) or regulation.
There is a cost to both, resulting in inefficiencies.
Next time you need butter (or cheese, or milk or any food), thank a farmer for being the bedrock of the economy.
The current Government is grateful; we can be, too.

I don't believe people are genuinely shocked by the language we're all hearing every night on our streaming TV shows. What is shocking is the standard of argument being employed by politicians and parties as they seek to score points with silly populist arguments. On my Facebook and Instagram feeds, the Labour Party has been trying to tell me that the Government is to blame for soaring butter prices. It has posted a chart of butter prices pointing out that they have doubled since the National-led coalition came to power. That's annoyed me on a number of levels. Despite the fact it seems to enrage many Kiwis, soaring dairy prices are clearly a net gain for the economy. We sell a lot more internationally than we consume locally and the current dairy price spike is expected to bring in an additional $10 billion in export revenue over this year and next. It's exactly what our economy needed. The impact on consumers is overstated. Butter prices have doubled in two years. You used to be able to get a 500g block for about $4.50 now it's about $8.50. That's an extra $4 a week, far less than petrol prices fluctuate on a regular basis. Also, there are numerous butter substitutes and blends that haven't risen nearly that much. I understand why someone on the Labour Party team has tried to milk the dairy price story (sorry for the pun). It is a headline grabber and an easy online meme. I bet the analytics on it look great. But it makes no sense in the real world. The Government has no control over international dairy prices. There are things a government could do to reduce the cost of butter for local consumers. They could subsidise the price with taxpayer money. Or they could impose price controls on farmers and force them to sell a certain amount locally. These would be terrible policies, and there is no chance Labour is about to adopt them. So butter prices would be exactly the same right now if they had won the last election. More broadly, inflation is running rampant like it was throughout 2021 and 2022. It has edged up to 2.5% but remains within the Reserve Bank's 1-3% target band. The same Stats NZ release that included the butter price graph also pointed out that annual rent price increases haven't been below 2.8% since 2011. Of course, much lower inflation isn't all good news. The fact it is underperforming so badly is giving economists confidence that inflation will stay subdued. The economy is struggling to get any momentum and there is no doubt a lot of people are doing it tough. There's no shortage of real issues with this recovery, which the current Government ought to take some responsibility for. Labour could legitimately be attacking the Government on unemployment and job security. There are tens of thousands more people on the Jobseeker benefit now than there were when Labour was in power. I don't mean to single out Labour either. The National Party spent a lot of time in opposition attacking Labour for letting those Jobseeker numbers rise. It also drives me crazy when the Government holds press conferences after the Official Cash Rate announcement to take credit for falling interest rates. Interest rates are falling because inflation is under control and the economy is underperforming. If they go much lower, it will be because things are getting worse, not better. Meanwhile, in the past week, we've had David Seymour running 'victim of the day' social media attacks on opponents of his regulatory standards bill. Seymour says he is being 'playful' and having 'fun' with his line, suggesting opponents are suffering from 'Regulatory Standards Derangement Syndrome'. Surely if the bill is worth putting before Parliament, then it must have been aimed at delivering some sort of meaningful change to the status quo. Let's have a grown-up debate about what that intended change is. What's frustrating about political debate in 2025 is that politicians are so quick to build 'straw man' arguments because they seem easy to sell as memes and headlines. A 'straw man', for the record, is where you present a weak version or flawed version of your opponent's argument so you can easily dismiss it. It's lazy and doesn't do anything to boost the quality of policy-making in this country. It's probably too much to ask, but wouldn't it be nice if our politicians were confident enough in their view to employ the opposite of a 'straw man' argument? That's called a 'steel-man' argument. It requires you to consciously present the strongest and most charitable version of your opponent's argument. Then you explain why it still doesn't stack up. It requires you to do a bit of homework and think through the logical basis for your argument. I'm pretty sure all the leaders of our political parties are smart enough to do that. But we seem to be following a depressing international trend which sees social media debate reduce everything to simplistic points which appeal to an increasingly tribal political base. New Zealand has a cyclical recovery underway that would have happened, at a greater or lesser pace, regardless of who was in power. Scrapping over that is pointless. We need to be looking ahead to how we lift the economy at a structural level and enable higher levels of cyclical growth. That requires some serious work and will need a higher quality of debate than what we've been seeing this year. This column will take a two-week break as the author is on holiday with his family. Corner Store: Over 25 years where style and individuality intersect

People have known it as Base Clothing store, but the Wānaka retailer has changed its name to Corner Store. As it turns out, it is one of the longest-running clothing stores in town. Owner Chris Walsh got his first retail job when he was just 15, working across the Ditch in Newcastle, where he was brought up. That was where he got a taste of fashion and the fun that comes from working in the industry, he says. "There were these cool girls working with me and I was thinking 'Whoa, there's great girls, you can hang out with girls, this is perfect'," he jokes. He dreamed of coming to New Zealand to ski at Treble Cone. When he arrived, he fell in love with Wānaka and the rest is history. In 1999, he and two mates, Brent Harridge and Tim Hudson, brought into the Base clothing store business. At the time it cost them just $50,000 each for the lease in Helwick St. By comparison, sections in Meadowstone Dr at the time were going for about $30,000. "I came to New Zealand and realised there wasn't much in the way of clothing stores." There was little happening at the lakefront end of Helwick St and so they placed themselves on "Plods Patch" (the intersection of Helwick and Dunmore Sts), as it was affectionately named. He recalls PaperPlus was on the diagonal corner, where it still sits today. "More retail in upper Helwick St has helped. The pavements were no good at the start — it was just us and the pharmacy. You had to cross the road, [so] we were a bit of a destination." Over the course of a quarter of a century, he has seen the town change remarkably and plenty of retailers fail, or leave for other opportunities. "In Wānaka, a lot of shops come and go but there's still a lot of independent stores and we have a local vibe, which is pretty cool and special." While there were stores before his, and many have come since, the shops he recalls having done the long-haul are Kai Whakapai, the Dough Bin, PaperPlus, Racers Edge, Wānaka Pharmacy and the Westpac Bank. Mr Walsh puts down the longevity down to necessity and grit. After the 1999 Wānaka floods and the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, he had to borrow money from his parents and sell property to stay on that corner. "My accountants were saying shut the business down." He stayed because he loved the work and "knew it would come right". It did. Once the GFC passed, Wānaka township started to grow at a slow and steady pace; in the past five years it has boomed. The property market and domestic buyers had helped. Tourism been a huge part of his shop's survival. "The quality of international tourism — we are getting more European and Americans and Canadians and they love shopping," he says. "Covid was frightening when it happened. We started our online store more heavily during Covid and then after Covid we had a really awesome couple of years. "I find New Zealanders are my best customers, followed by Aussies. New Zealanders were travelling around and supporting New Zealanders. The last couple of years have been a little tough because the economy has been a little tough on people's spending, mortgages and interest rates." When he looks back on 1999 when the shop first opened, the store was quite "modern" compared with most others, which set it apart. "The store was unique. It was way out there; everything was old and our store was new school and modern." Initial brands stocked were Lee, Huffer, Wrangler and Rusty, all of which carry through today. Mr Walsh says Wānaka is great for shopping because it has more than just chain stores. It is a shopping destination because of its unique independent stores. "In Wānaka, the clothing assortment is fantastic. There are so many good clothing stores. I think we are one of the best places to go shopping. We have more options than anywhere. You go anywhere else and they are all chain stores but here we are all different and independent." He adds that Wānaka people are fashionable. "I think Wānaka people are fit and healthy and they like to wear cool clothes that are comfortable. And the older crew dress younger. It's down to earth." While his prices are mid level, he has enjoyed seeing higher-end fashion come to Wānaka and bring something for everyone. The business trio also started women's clothing store, Bella, as well as the Base ski shop. They have since sold both and they are still in operating. And as for the name change, it's obvious, he says. "I dreamed up all these funky names. Corner Store suits all the ages — we have teens and older customers, we cater for all women and all ages and Corner Store seems to suit that, a place that caters for all."

Australia: Less Bang For Your Buck – NSW Budget Is Missing Key Opportunities For Everyone

We've crunched the numbers and can show that the financial cost of discrimination and exclusion is far higher than the costs associated with investing in inclusion. 'Despite repeated calls from people with disability, the NSW Government has failed to deliver a clear and sustained investment in disabled lives in the 2025-26 Budget, the outcomes of which will be felt by all,' said Trinity Ford, President, People with Disability Australia (PWDA). The key messages from PWDA's pre-budget submission are that making NSW more inclusive and accessible offers: Wellbeing benefits for people with disability. Wellbeing benefits for the wider community. Opportunities to save over $12 billion. These key benefits and opportunities have not been considered throughout the Budget. A targeted investment in Foundational Supports was clearly missing—and that's deeply concerning. "The complete omission of any specific funding for Foundational Supports is a serious missed opportunity—and one that Australia can't afford. We are increasingly concerned that this may signal a deliberate move to sideline foundational supports from the Government's agenda. We will be raising this urgently with Minister Washington and will be monitoring the Government's position closely', said Ms Ford. A commitment to accessible housing is also lacking within announcements. Although the Government has committed to improve housing for the people of NSW, PWDA is disappointed the Budget does little to directly address the housing crisis facing people with disability. Currently, 66,698 households are on the NSW social housing waiting list. The government's own data acknowledges that around one-third of these applicants are people with disability. The Government is committing billions to fast-track 465,500 new homes over the next five years through private and mixed development initiatives. However, most of these are not social or accessible housing, and there are no clear guarantees of how people with disability—especially those on low incomes—will benefit. "Making all new homes accessible by mandating the National Construction Code's minimum accessibility standards would not cost the government anything—and it would help more people with disability live independently, instead of relying on social housing', said Ms Ford. Right now, homelessness is costing NSW about $6.5 billion every year. Over 10 years, that adds up to $65 billion. If the Government invested just one-third of that amount—$26 billion over 10 years—it could stop many people from becoming homeless and save almost $4 billion each year. PWDA welcomes the NSW Government's investments toward improving access to support for victim-survivors of violence and trauma. However, there is no mention of how these funds will support people with disability—despite clear evidence people with disability are at significantly higher risk of experiencing violence and need different interventions. 'Funding responses to violence must be inclusive. Without specific measures to address the unique risks and access barriers faced by people with disability, we risk leaving behind the very communities most in need of protection,' said Ms Ford. PWDA is calling on the NSW Government to commit to the inclusion and wellbeing of people with disability. 'Continued discrimination against people with disability, and doing nothing to address it, is expensive. There are clear gaps in the 2025-26 NSW Budget. People with disability are being left out, which will end up costing the Government and taxpayers more in the future,' said Trinity Ford, President of PWDA.
