Mother faces murder charge after baby son found dead at family home
Jacinta Beth Sells briefly appeared in the Western Australian Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old allegedly murdered her son in the early hours of Monday at the family's home in the suburb of Balcatta, in Perth 's northern suburbs.
Police and paramedics were called to the residence about 3am following reports of a serious assault.
The lifeless infant was found with critical injuries and declared dead at the scene.
It is believed the boy suffered stab wounds and Sells was drug-affected.
He is understood to have died in front of family members, including a 13-year-old girl.
A slight woman with long dark hair and a gaunt face, Sells sat motionless in the dock with her head down, flanked by two security guards, before the brief hearing.
She stood when the charge against her was read, acknowledging she understood the accusation before being led from the court.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch previously described the incident as 'horrific' and a 'very sad story'.
Sells was remanded in custody to reappear in Stirling Garden Magistrates Court on August 20.

Alleged fraudster lived in $18m penthouse
A man allegedly involved in a massive $38m fraud scheme will remain in custody on remand after his arrest at a $37,000-a-month Barangaroo penthouse rental. Bing Li, one of two alleged ringleaders of the fraud scheme, was hauled out of a suite at Crown casino in Barangaroo on Thursday wearing a $6000 Louis Vuitton bomber jacket and marched through the forecourt to a waiting police van. The 38-year-old has been charged with a long list of offences, including 87 counts of deception, forgery and proceeds of crime charges. Police will allege he is responsible for a $12.9m fraud. In the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, Mr Li's matter was briefly mentioned. A release application for Mr Li to be bailed was initially submitted to the court. However, it was later withdrawn, with Mr Li expected to remain in custody on remand ahead of his next court appearance. NSW Police began investigating a luxury 'ghost car' loan fraud scheme in January 2024 but now say the alleged scam run wider into large-scale personal, business and home loan fraud. In the early hours of Wednesday, police raided 10 properties, seizing two Bentleys, a Ferrari 360, cash, a gun and two Tasers, body armour and drugs. Speaking to the media at Parramatta Police Station, Detective Superintendent Gordon Arbinja said members of the alleged syndicate had 'lived an opulent lifestyle'. 'We know that the Barangaroo man had been renting a penthouse in Barangaroo worth $18m for $37,000 a month,' he said. 'Yesterday, when we went thorough a safety deposit box, we located over $1m worth of luxury items, including watches and jewellery and cash. 'We did ask one of the alleged offenders what they did for a living, and he told investigators that he was a professional gambler.' Meanwhile, the second alleged ringleader, a 34-year-old man from Seaforth, faces 107 similar allegations. Police have arrested and charged two alleged ringleaders. He was denied bail, and police allege he has committed a $4m fraud. Six people have already been arrested during this investigation, with the NSW Crime Commission seizing or restraining $18m in assets. Police put Wednesday's haul at $20m, taking the total value of seizures to $38m. The investigation began at the start of 2024 when police uncovered an alleged syndicate targeting vehicle financing companies in Sydney. The syndicate was allegedly using stolen personal information to apply for loans through various companies, for 'luxury 'ghost cars' that did not exist', the police spokesperson said. 'Ongoing investigations revealed the syndicate's operations extended well beyond car financing fraud to (alleged) large-scale personal, business and home loan fraud against multiple financial institutions.'

Next move in German backpacker saga
Weeks after a lost German backpacker was rescued from the remote Western Australian outback, her abandoned van has been recovered by local farmers. Carolina Wilga had seemingly vanished after she left the tiny township of Beacon, about 300km northeast of Perth, in her black and silver Mitsubishi camper van on June 29. Her van was located almost 150km from Beacon, bogged in a thick patch of isolated scrub on the Karroun Hill reserve, and Ms Wilga herself was rescued a short time later. Several weeks later, a group of determined locals have recovered Ms Wilga's abandoned vehicle. Ms Wilga was found 'ravaged by mosquitoes' and severely disoriented according to WA Police. 7News Credit: Channel 7 A video posted to the community-run Wheatbelt Way Facebook page documents the Sprigg family's efforts to remove the vehicle from the bush. 'Thank you to the Sprigg family for retrieving missing backpacker Carolina Wilga's van,' the post said. 'The community spirit in the Wheatbelt Way is unmatched.' Fred Sprigg, a member of the family who recovered the camper van, posted a comment on the video describing the recovery effort as an 'expensive exercise'. 'Was a community effort. Don't like leaving rubbish in the bush,' he said. It is understood the recovery operation took three days to complete, and Ms Wilga's friends in WA are expected to collect the vehicle so it can be returned to its owners. In a statement after her rescue, Ms Wilga explained she had got lost after losing control of her van and getting a knock to her head that left her confused. She said: 'First and foremost, I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart - a thank you that truly comes from the depths of my soul!' Ms Wilga was transported to Perth for treatment before returning to Germany.
