Sports Fans Celebrating Tennis Legend Venus Williams On Tuesday

Sports Fans Celebrating Tennis Legend Venus Williams On Tuesday originally appeared on The Spun. Venus Williams announced this month that she'd compete in the DC Open. The 45-year-old tennis star hasn't competed in a tournament in over a year. Williams kicked off her run at the DC Open with an impressive doubles victory. She teamed up with fellow American tennis star Hailey Baptiste to take down Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue, 6-3, 6-1. "It's just nice to be able to play. Where I am at this year is so much different where I was at last year. It's night and day, being able to be here and prepare for the tournament as opposed to preparing for surgery a year ago," Williams said earlier this month. "At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter if your health is not there. So, it definitely put it in perspective for me and maybe made it easier to make the decision to maybe come back out here and maybe play even freer." Just in case a doubles victory wasn't enough to validate Williams' decision to return to competition, she took down Peyton Stearns in a singles match this Tuesday night, 6-3, 6-4. Stearns, the No. 35 ranked player in the world, simply no answer for Williams' power on the hard court. Immediately after Williams upset Stearns on Tuesday, fans showed their support for the seven-time Grand Slam champion. "Venus Williams….the woman that you are," one fan wrote on X. "It's definitely a pleasure to watch Venus Williams play tennis, seriously," a second fan commented. "Venus Williams displaying some incredible tennis tonight. First WTA match in 16 months, 45 years old, and slamming 121mph aces like it's just a regular day. Love to see it," a third fan said. "Venus Williams is 45-years-old and can still do this. Incredible," another person declared. Could this be the start of a career renaissance for Venus? Only time will tell, but she proved to the world that legends can never be counted out. Zach Lowe responds to Nets' Cam Thomas over 'consensus' spat

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas recently made headlines after addressing The Ringer's Zach Lowe over comments Lowe made in a recent episode of "The Zach Lowe Show" podcast. Lowe was pointing out what the consensus is on Thomas and his game, prompting Thomas to respond by dismissing the criticism. Once the dust settled, Lowe took the time to address the situation. "If Cam Thomas had listened to the subsequent 12 minutes, I don't think he did, but I don't know. He would have heard me deep-dive into his game and talk about career-high assists," Lowe said to colleague Rob Mahoney. While Thomas was within his right to address any criticism of him or his game, Lowe also spoke about Thomas for much longer than what was put on social media to provide context around the conversation. "Certain kind of passes that he's gotten meaningfully better at: Nick Claxton lobs, little dump-offs, and stuff like that," Lowe continued. "I have said consistently for two years of Cam Thomas dialogue that the guy can straight up get buckets and there is a place for him in the NBA. To me, that place is most likely sixth-man scoring burst guy, which is what I said in that 12-minute segment." As part of Lowe's discussion of Thomas, the former ESPN NBA commentator mentioned that Thomas is one of the most polarizing players in the NBA and how social media reacted to Lowe's comments proved that once again. Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his four-year career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. Thomas is currently a restricted free-agent this summer, meaning that he doesn't have much control over where he plays next season and with few NBA teams having ample cap space, Thomas may have to settle for what the Nets want to pay him. It's possible that Thomas is frustrated by his first foray into free-agency, something that Lowe understands, but Lowe also wanted to make it clear how he feels about the controversy and Thomas. Kyrie Irving fires back at former Nets teammate Kevin Durant's claim about commitment

Kevin Durant recently appeared on the "Mind the Game" podcast with LeBron James and Steve Nash. The 2013-14 MVP made headlines over comments he made while discussing his Brooklyn Nets tenure with his former head coach, where he claimed that they were the only two that were committed to winning. Kyrie Irving revealed that he would address the comments on stream. The nine-time All-Star did just that as he fired back at his former co-star suggesting that he wasn't committed. "When he said this, emotionally, I was like, okay," Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving claimed Tuesday. "We're all committed to the goal at the end of the day, but sometimes not everybody's going to follow what you want them to do. I wish I had my soundboard for this, but not everybody's going to do what you want them to do." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp "I've had to accept that as a human being and as a leader -- not everybody's going to do what you want them to do," Irving continued. "Not everybody's going to be committed the way you want them to be committed. And it's not like K is asking me for this, but I asked for this commitment before I committed to Brooklyn from him, which was a beautiful thing. I'm like, 'yo, let's commit to this thing, we can build up Brooklyn and we can really put Brooklyn on the map. Nobody's been thinking about Brooklyn. But when he said that, I'm like, bro, Steve wasn't even in the play yet." Irving added that Durant was responsible for Nash being hired. He noted that things going on behind the scenes made the situation weird for everybody involved. The superstar point guard's decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine led many to claim that he wasn't truly serious about winning a championship. While he was suspended to begin the 2021-22 season, Irving ultimately held firm on his stance. His decision contributed to James Harden asking for a trade and ultimately being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers. Irving, Durant and Nash all saw their tenure with the Nets end the following season.
