After 3 seasons with Chicago Bears, Lake Zurich's Jack Sanborn is ‘grateful' for new start with Dallas Cowboys
He started at middle linebacker as a freshman at Lake Zurich in 2014. He played in 11 games as a freshman at Wisconsin in 2018. He signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and started six games as a rookie.
'The thing I saw in Jack, even his freshman year, was his willingness to do whatever it took to make himself better,' former Lake Zurich coach David Proffitt said. 'The players that stay consistent in doing those things usually go further in their careers.'
So don't expect the 6-foot-2, 234-pound Sanborn to take his foot off the gas in Dallas. He knows what he has to do to continue playing in the NFL.
'It's your job,' he said. 'In college, I started to believe that the NFL was a true tangible goal I could pursue. Now that I'm here, I don't take it for granted.
'It's an incredible privilege to play a game at the highest possible level, and it's important to understand that improving every day is necessary because there's always someone waiting and working to take your spot.'
Sanborn kept a roster spot for three seasons in Chicago. He played in 48 games, including 19 starts, and recorded 164 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks. Off the field, he received the Ed Block Courage Award in March 2024.
'There were definitely a ton of moments where I had to sit back and pinch myself, especially early in my career, thinking about where I was playing,' he said. 'I obviously had a close interest in the Bears growing up here.
'But that was the last thing on my mind after college when I was just trying to do everything I was supposed to do to make the team. It all happened so fast.'
Sanborn had to find a new team in the offseason, however. He was a restricted free agent and wasn't tendered a contract by the Bears.
So Sanborn signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Cowboys in March. He has reunited with former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, who is the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, and former Bears linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi.
'In leaving (the Bears), it's only natural to wonder what type of business the NFL is,' Sanborn said. 'Was I disappointed in the moment after it happened? Yes. But now I'm having another 'pinch me' moment playing for the Dallas Cowboys. I'm so grateful to be part of the culture they're trying to build there.'
Sanborn, who could return to Soldier Field when the Cowboys visit the Bears on Sept. 21, is also grateful for the journey.
'Every step is so great, and every step is worthy of celebration,' he said.
With each step Sanborn has taken, one thing hasn't changed.
'I think it's crucial that I've never lost my passion for football,' he said. 'It's different now than it was when I was 7 or 8 playing with my friends. I've got certain priorities in my job as an athlete. But it's important to have that abundant belief that you can do whatever you put your mind to.'

Rams LB Jared Verse provides hilarious account of the torture chamber that is an Aaron Donald workout session
Aaron Donald has been retired for more than a year now but he's still torturing NFL players. They just happen to be the ones he likes now. We heard last month about Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse accepting Donald's challenge to go through an "old man workout" at his home. After hanging up his cleats last offseason, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year appears to remain very much in game shape and publicly offered to show the 24-year-old Verse his regimen. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] We got some fun social media video from the workout in which Donald appeared to be enjoying himself, while Verse appeared ready to admit he had made a huge mistake. As it turns out, Verse was having an even worse time than the video showed. Speaking with reporters on Thursday at training camp, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year provided an account of what exactly goes into an Aaron Donald workout: "We do four workouts, it's all cardio. VersaClimber, bike, lunges and core. Four rounds each. You do that, you're already tired. Then you do four sets of core, two different workouts so it's like eight different workouts, four sets each. We do all that and he's like 'Are you ready for the real workout?' "I'm like 'Bro, I've been here for 45 minutes, what are you talking about?' We go to the weight room, it's all arms. That's why he's big as hell. It's like eight different circuits, four sets each, I'm there for an hour and a half." Things got pretty dire for Verse, whose potential escape plans didn't work out. The experience left him unable to move his body and joking (we think) about staying far away from the future Hall of Famer: "His wife came in laughing at me, I told her to call the police. I'm not even joking, I'm dead serious. I told her to call the police. She wouldn't do it. I tried to lie and say my mom was at my house and I had to go let her in. He told me to give my keys to his manager or assistant or something and they would go let my mom in. So I wasn't leaving. "Finished the workout. I'm dead tired, I'm exhausted. I had a plan to go jump in the sauna afterwards, didn't happen. Had plans to watch film, didn't happen. Went home and I didn't work out for another day and a half because I couldn't move my body ... He needs to stay away from me and if security sees him on the property they need to take care of him.' Speaking more seriously, Verse acknowledged the intensity of the workouts taught him a lesson he has started applying to his own routine: "No doubt about it, that workout was psychotic. I'm never doing that again. He did change my workout routine, though ... It was definitely the mindset that you got to keep going. "The one thing he kept saying throughout the whole workout, and he doesn't really show too much in the video, 'Think of the fourth quarter.' Everyone's good the first and the second, third, but what about the fourth? That's where you make your money." Verse was the 19th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft and was a standout as a rookie, posting 66 combined tackles, 18 QB hits, 11 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks for a Rams defense that needed all the help it could get after losing Donald to retirement. That effort earned Verse both the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, which Donald won in 2014, and his first career Pro Bowl honors. Donald, meanwhile, finished up a career in 2023 that saw him make the Pro Bowl in all 10 seasons of his career, first-team All-Pro honors in eight of them, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and a Super Bowl ring.

Arizona Cardinals LB J.J. Russell back with team after visit to hospital
All tests came back negative and Russell is back in camp with the team. Update on J.J .Russell: All tests were negative, he has been released from the hospital and has re-joined the team at training camp. A scary situation for the Arizona Cardinals and one of their players had the best possible outcome on Thursday. Linebacker J.J. Russell, taken to the hospital after a collision in Thursday's practice, is okay. The team announced via social media that Russell has returned to the team at training camp after all tests came back negative and he was released from the hospital. Russell collided with rookie safety Kitan Crawford, helmets colliding, and went down hard. He did not get up. He was put on a board and carted to the locker room. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for head and neck injuries. It was serious enough that the entire team knelt down and surrounded him, and head coach Jonathan Gannon ended practice early. So as serious as it was, there could not have been a better result. Will Russell practice Friday? That seems unlikely, especially since the Cardinals have an off day on Saturday. Cleveland Browns mock draft update: Training camp edition
The Cleveland Browns have been one of the true struggling franchises in the NFL. They haven't captured a division crown since 1991 and are one of only four teams that have never been to a Super Bowl. Every offseason, the Browns and their fans have hope, and it seems that every year, things go wrong. When we started on this three-round mock draft for the Browns, we had to look at it with an eye on building a team that can eventually compete in the AFC, and didn't look at quarterback as the Browns drafted two of them in the 2025 NFL draft. We aren't sure either is a franchise quarterback, but the team seems committed to seeing what they have in the short term. So, we used three of the four picks on offense, but took a chance at No. 1 overall. First round - S Caleb Downs - Ohio State The Browns spent more than a decade playing four games a year against the combo of Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed so they understand the impact a truly elite safety can have. A safety has never gone No. 1 overall, and that might continue, but no one should be shocked if a player of Downs' caliber ends up there. First round - WR Jordyn Tyson - Arizona State The best route runner in the draft and a complete receiver who can take over a game. The Browns have cobbled together a very average group of receivers this season and can't expect to compete with this combination of talent. Second round - DE LT Overton - Alabama A defense line Cleveland's can never have enough big bodies up front who can rush the passer and stuff the run and Overton is a budding star. Third round - WR Eric Singleton Jr. - Auburn We go back to wide receiver here because Singleton is just such an explosive playmaker and a perfect player to pair up with Tyson no matter who is the starting quarterback.
