Railway inquiry committee inspects closed-down catering firm in Kochi
The high-level committee comprising the Divisional Commercial Manager, Thiruvananthapuram; the Health Officer, Thiruvananthapuram; and the Area Manager of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was constituted on Wednesday when the firm was sealed. The committee's visit for evidence collection was kept under wraps.
The firm, Brandavan Food Products, has a presence across the country and serves food on trains of various zonal railways directly and also on trains catered to by IRCTC. The unit in Kochi reportedly served food directly for five sets of trains under the Southern Railway and another three sets of trains through the IRCTC.
The committee, it is learnt, will not just restrict itself to the instant case in Kochi but will look at the larger issues related to the food supply on trains and make recommendations. At its preliminary meeting, the committee had decided to slap a fine of ₹1 lakh on the unit and asked the IRCTC to take stern action. The committee will look into the quality of food being served on trains and recommend corrective measures, wherever necessary, sources said.
The catering unit will have to comply with all requirements before resuming operations, according to sources. 'Initially, they will have to secure a no-objection certificate from the Pollution Control Board and then apply for licences from the Corporation and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The unit will have to ensure necessary waste disposal and management facilities, clean drinking water and health cards for its kitchen workers. The unit didn't have the Corporation licence. It had a registration from the FSSAI, but its scale of operation warranted a licence from the authority,' said Corporation sources.
The firm has been under the Corporation Health wing's scanner for a few months following complaints from people and has been served multiple notices. The health wing on Thursday submitted a report to the Corporation Secretary on the action taken against the unit. The action was taken under the Kerala Municipality Act Section 447 (licensing for the use of places within the municipal area for various purposes) and 340A (prohibited waste disposal).
The stale food seized from the unit was sent to Brahmapuram for disposal.

Corporation's series of adalats ends with 699 pending files disposed of
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's series of file adalats concluded on Monday with a total of 699 long pending files disposed of across various zones. At the final adalat held in the main office, files from 15 wards came up for consideration. Mayor Arya Rajendran presided over the adalat in which Deputy Mayor standing committee chairpersons and other officials were present. A total of 85 applications regarding pending files in various sections were received in advance. Out of this, 76 applications were disposed of. Directions were issued to the officials concerned to take necessary action on applications received at the adalat venue within seven days. The Corporation decided to take action against two licensees who had allegedly misled the civic body and the applicant by securing permits for construction near the Amayizhanjan Canal. The buildings were allocated Unauthorised (UA) number. The applications for occupancy certificates of some residents, which had remained stuck for some years, were cleared considering the fact that they had applied before the Master Plan 2040 came into existence. In some other cases, occupancy certificates were cleared as the house was constructed in 2 cents of land. said that the file adalats in the eleven zonal offices as well as the main office were successful with several people benefiting from the clearing of long pending files.

Rail over-bridge construction begins on Cuddalore Road after seven-month delay
After a delay of more than seven months, the construction of a four-lane rail over-bridge near the level crossing at Anglo French Textiles (AFT) on the arterial Cuddalore Road has finally begun. The project was initially held up by the shifting of the temporary bus stand to Cuddalore Road. Though the reconstructed Rajiv Gandhi Bus Terminus on Maraimalai Adigal Salai was inaugurated in May, the rail over-bridge project ran into delays again following traffic diversions to facilitate retrofitting and strengthening of the rail over-bridge on 100-Feet Road. The work started on July 30. The traffic police have made alternative arrangements for vehicles to ply on the Cuddalore Road. The ₹72-crore bridge, being constructed jointly by Southern Railway and Puducherry's Highways Department, will decongest traffic along the Puducherry-Cuddalore Road near the AFT and the District Court. Of the total cost, around ₹52 crore will be utilised from the Smart Cities funds and ₹19 crore will be borne by the Railways. The level crossing is situated on the Cuddalore Road branching off Maraimalai Adigal Salai and connects Mudaliarpet and Uppalam. The frequent closure of the railway gate in the busy section has been causing much inconvenience to motorists. According to a senior railway official, 'Piling has begun for the rail over-bridge. Construction will now focus on the mall side, starting with spans for the approach road. The bridge is proposed to be built to a length of 630 metres. It will start near Providence Mall and end near the AFT main building on the Cuddalore Road. It will also include a limited-use subway. Another subway has also been planned. The project will be completed in 15 months.' According to D. Jayaseelan, a resident, 'There is a heavy traffic congestion from the AFT to Marappalam Junction, with vehicles queuing up to a distance of one km at peak hours. The rail over-bridge, a long-pending demand, will help to reduce the distance between Marappalam and Venkata Subba Reddiar Square. It will also serve as an alternative route to the city.'

Chief Minister Stalin to inaugurate wholesale market in Tiruvannamalai
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will soon inaugurate ₹ 24.50 crore first ever combined wholesale and retail market for vegetables, fruits, flowers and fish market in Tiruvannamalai town in September. Officials of Tiruvannamalai Corporation, who will be will maintaining the new market, said that the construction is in its final stage with around 95% of total work completed. Remaining works include setting up of thrust lifts, lawn and a few painting works. 'The new market complex will be a one-stop shopping destination for consumers including pilgrims to Arunachaleswara temple where fresh vegetables and fruits from surrounding villages will also be sold. The new facility will be a platform for local farmers to sell their produce,' S. Selva Balaji, Commissioner, Tiruvannamalai Corporation, told The Hindu. Accompanied by Collector K. Tharpagaraj and Corporation officials, Minister for Public Works and Highways E.V. Velu inspected finishing works at the new bus terminus and wholesale market near the town. Corporation officials said that thrust lifts will help to collect garbage, mostly vegetable and fruit wastes, in the market to compost yards within the premises. Each lift, on an average, has a capacity to carry around 600 kg of waste. Currently, installation of lifts are underway. Spread over 2.67 acres, the new market is being built under Kalaignar Urban Development Scheme 2022-23. The single-storey market will have vegetable and fruits shops on the ground floor and flowers market on its first floor with 128 shops on each floor. Fish market will be on the rear end of the market. Each shop, on an average, will be 110 and will be leased for a fixed period. Ramps will be built to allow goods laden lorries to unload commodities on the first floor of the market. Rainwater harvesting system, water taps, CCTV cameras, police booth, high mast lamps, parking and washrooms will be available as well. At present, Jothi market,the only wholesale flower market since the 1980s, is located on Theradi Street near the Rajagopuram of the temple. It results in traffic congestion due to the continuous flow of tourists. Big consumers like hotels and marriage event makers unload large quantities of vegetables and fruits at temporary spots in the town from lorries before the perishables were stored at their places.
