Storms hit southern China mainland in wake of Typhoon Wipha
Heavy rain lashed the cities of Yangjiang, Zhanjiang and Maoming in China's southern province Guangdong after the storm system made landfall on Sunday evening.
On Sunday it brushed past Hong Kong where it felled trees and scaffolding, grounded flights and sent nearly 280 people into shelters.
China's national forecaster said it had weakened to a tropical storm upon landfall, and forecast it to skirt the coast of Guangdong and move southwesterly towards Vietnam.
Heavy rain is forecast for mainland Chinese coastal regions such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Fujian until Tuesday morning, with warnings of flash floods, landslides and wind hazards.
The system will move into the Gulf of Tonkin late Monday morning, over which it will gather intensity before hitting Vietnam's northern coast on Tuesday, the forecaster said.

Caritas Philippines noted that it is closely monitoring the impact of the calamity on the communities. 'Ongoing monitoring is being conducted by the affected dioceses. Information and updates are being disseminated in real time through the social media platform and group chat,' it said. The group added that so far, it needs food items and non-food items, such as thermal kits, hygiene kits, and dignity kits. In a forecast released early Tuesday, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) advised of heavy to very heavy rain in the North, Northeast, Central, and Eastern regions of the country, which may cause flash floods and forest runoff. The department also warned that the waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will be strong, so small boats should remain ashore. "The period of strongest impact is expected to start from Tuesday through Thursday," the forecast said. Thailand's southern tourist-attracting provinces of Phuket and Krabi were among the Andaman coast provinces pounded by heavy rain and stormy seas caused by Wipha since the weekend, which has claimed the lives of two Chinese tourists. Emergency alert system on standby as storm Wipha nears Thailand
BANGKOK: The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) director-general Passakorn Bunyalak said on Tuesday (July 22) that provincial units had been placed on the highest level of alert, with a central war room set up to monitor the tropical storm Wipha and assess disaster risks around the clock. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, Wipha is expected to make landfall in Vietnam on Wednesday before weakening into a tropical depression. Its influence is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the North, upper Northeast, and Central regions of Thailand from July 22–24.
