Storms hit southern China mainland in wake of Typhoon Wipha

BEIJING: Storms drenched southern parts of the Chinese mainland on Monday, triggering warnings of flash floods and landslides, a day after Typhoon Wipha pounded Hong Kong.
Heavy rain lashed the cities of Yangjiang, Zhanjiang and Maoming in China's southern province Guangdong after the storm system made landfall on Sunday evening.
On Sunday it brushed past Hong Kong where it felled trees and scaffolding, grounded flights and sent nearly 280 people into shelters.
China's national forecaster said it had weakened to a tropical storm upon landfall, and forecast it to skirt the coast of Guangdong and move southwesterly towards Vietnam.
Heavy rain is forecast for mainland Chinese coastal regions such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Fujian until Tuesday morning, with warnings of flash floods, landslides and wind hazards.
The system will move into the Gulf of Tonkin late Monday morning, over which it will gather intensity before hitting Vietnam's northern coast on Tuesday, the forecaster said.

In separate statements on Tuesday (July 22), the dioceses of Malolos and Cubao said those affected by heavy rains and flooding may seek shelter in several churches. According to the Malolos Diocese, churches located in low-lying areas in Bulacan, such as those in Marilao, Guiguinto, Meycauayan, Bocaue, Calumpit, Santa Maria, Hagonoy, Valenzuela, and Malolos, are accepting individuals seeking temporary shelter. The Cubao Diocese, meanwhile, advised the public to go to the Holy Family Parish – Roxas and San Antonio de Padua Parish. Meanwhile, the social and advocacy arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, Caritas Philippines, is preparing to launch a local emergency appeal, through the Alay Kapwa Solidarity Fund, for the benefit of communities affected by the weather disturbances. 'This appeal will be announced during the televised daily Mass to mobilize immediate assistance for communities affected,' it added. Caritas Philippines noted that it is closely monitoring the impact of the calamity on the communities. 'Ongoing monitoring is being conducted by the affected dioceses. Information and updates are being disseminated in real time through the social media platform and group chat,' it said. The group added that so far, it needs food items and non-food items, such as thermal kits, hygiene kits, and dignity kits. The combined effects of Crising and the monsoon rains have affected 362,465 families, or 1,266,322 individuals, residing in 2,088 villages in 17 regions in the country, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Thailand braces for impact of Wipha as two Chinese tourists killed in bad weather

In a forecast released early Tuesday, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) advised of heavy to very heavy rain in the North, Northeast, Central, and Eastern regions of the country, which may cause flash floods and forest runoff. The department also warned that the waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will be strong, so small boats should remain ashore. "The period of strongest impact is expected to start from Tuesday through Thursday," the forecast said. Thailand's southern tourist-attracting provinces of Phuket and Krabi were among the Andaman coast provinces pounded by heavy rain and stormy seas caused by Wipha since the weekend, which has claimed the lives of two Chinese tourists. The Phuket Consular Office of the Consulate General of The People's Republic of China in Songkhla confirmed to Xinhua that one Chinese tourist drowned in Krabi on Sunday, while another was killed by a falling tree brought down by the wind at a beach in Phuket. The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok issued a reminder on Tuesday that Chinese citizens in Thailand should prepare for strong winds and heavy rains and raise vigilance against the strong rains due to the influence of tropical storms and southwest monsoon. - Xinhua

BANGKOK: The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) director-general Passakorn Bunyalak said on Tuesday (July 22) that provincial units had been placed on the highest level of alert, with a central war room set up to monitor the tropical storm Wipha and assess disaster risks around the clock. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, Wipha is expected to make landfall in Vietnam on Wednesday before weakening into a tropical depression. Its influence is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the North, upper Northeast, and Central regions of Thailand from July 22–24.
