Ireland prop Clarkson called up by Lions as front row cover
A day later, the Lions announced they would bring in more reinforcement in the front row by flying in tighthead prop Clarkson from Lisbon, where he was part of an Ireland team that beat Portugal 106-7 on Saturday.
Clarkson's call-up swells the Irish contingent in the Lions squad, led by Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, to 18 players.
The 25-year-old Clarkson was given his Ireland debut by Farrell in November and has won eight caps.
His Ireland teammate Jamie Osborne, who can play centre or full-back, is already with the Lions in Brisbane after being summoned from Portugal as cover for Blair Kinghorn, who injured his knee last week.
Scotland's Kinghorn, widely regarded as first-choice Lions fullback, landed awkwardly in the 36-24 win against ACT Brumbies last Wednesday but scans on the knee showed no serious damage.
"We're hopeful that he will take some part in training (this week)," said Lions defence coach Simon Easterby of Kinghorn.
"Then it will be a little bit of a waiting game in terms of whether he's available for the first Test."
The Lions, winners of all five warm-up matches in Australia leading into the first Test, have already lost Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams to a torn hamstring and English fullback Elliot Daly with a broken arm.

Wallabies get Valetini fitness boost ahead of Lions Test
The ACT Brumbies stalwart -- arguably Australia's best player -- has been battling a hamstring issue and missed their warm-up clash against Fiji this month. But Englishman Parling -- who played for the Lions on their last tour of Australia in 2013 -- said the backrower was making progress and could feature if he passes a fitness final test. "Rob trained (on Tuesday). He's a quality player like everyone knows and we're very hopeful he'll be available for selection," said Parling, who will depart the Wallabies to become Leicester Tigers head coach once the Lions tour is over. There have been suggestions that the Wallabies might not risk Valetini for the first Test in Brisbane on Saturday, with two more Tests to come. But Parling said they would select their strongest team. "In terms of saving people for a series, I don't think you'd ever really do that. It's more just if someone's fit and ready to perform, can they improve a team?" he said. "If yeah, we'll get them out there." France-based lock Will Skelton has also been dealing with a niggle, but he too is back training, leaving Parling and Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt with a selection dilemma. Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams hold second row incumbency, but the giant Skelton could prove invaluable given the physical threat posed by the Lions. "It certainly does (complicate things)," admitted Parling, "It's different when Will's in there. He brings different attributes that other guys don't have, certainly around the static excursion points like scrum, the maul, other bits, the collision. It makes my job a bit harder." Australia name their matchday 23 on Thursday. With first choice fly-half Noah Lolesio out of the series after neck surgery, the number 10 jersey is up for grabs. Ben Donaldson was initially seen as favourite to take the role, but Tom Lynagh appears to have jumped in front of him with Australian media saying he would get the nod to start. Should Lynagh play, he will match the feat of his father Michael Lynagh, a long-time Wallabies fly-half and trusty kicker, who also played against the Lions in 1989. © 2025 AFP

Springbok Wiese banned for four matches over head butt
The 29-year-old back-rower will miss a one-off Test against Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday and three Rugby Championship matches -- two at home to Australia and one against New Zealand in Auckland. Wiese will be available for selection when the Springboks face the All Blacks in Wellington on September 13, seven days after the first meeting between the sides. South Africa then face Argentina twice to complete their Rugby Championship schedule. They meet France, Italy, Ireland and Wales during a November tour to Europe. Wiese was red-carded after 22 minutes of the first half in the second Test against Italy when South Africa were leading by 10 points. The Rugby World Cup title-holders went to win Saturday's game 45-0. His place in the team to face Georgia this weekend will be taken by his younger brother, Cobus Wiese, who made his Test debut last Saturday. Jasper Wiese played for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein and Leicester Tigers before joining Japanese outfit Urayasu D-Rocks last year.

Springboks captain Kolisi makes first appearance of season
A stiff neck ruled the two-time World Cup winner out of an exhibition match win over the Barbarians in Cape Town last month. Kolisi then sustained an Achilles tendon "niggle" and head coach Rassie Erasmus opted not to risk the veteran in a 2-0 Test series victory over Italy this month. He returns as the Springboks seek to maintain a 100 percent record against the Lelos, having beaten them comfortably in a 2003 World Cup pool match in Australia and a 2021 Test in Pretoria. "We wanted to make sure that Siya is 100 percent fit before selecting him, so it is great to have him back in the squad," said Erasmus after naming his matchday 23. Props Boan Venter and Neethling Fouche as well as hooker Marnus van der Merwe will all make their Test debuts in the northeastern city. "Boan, Marnus, and Neethling have been training hard and deserve their chances," said Erasmus, a key coaching figure in the 2019 and 2023 World Cup triumphs. "Marnus and Neethling played against the Barbarians, so they have an idea of what international rugby is about. "Boan has shown great potential at club level (for Edinburgh) and with the squad in the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to seeing him play. "Building squad depth has been one of our pillars as a squad since 2018, and they are all undoubtedly ready to make the step up." The starting team shows 10 changes from last weekend's 45-0 victory over Italy in Gqeberha. South Africa had to play 58 minutes with 14 men after number 8 Jasper Wiese was red-carded for head-butting prop Danilo Fischetti. Automatically ruled out of the Georgia Test as a result of his ill discipline, his place is taken by young brother Cobus Wiese, who debuted off the bench last weekend. Winger Edwill van der Merwe, who scored two tries in Gqeberha in his first appearance for 13 months and won the player of the match award, is one of five starters retained. The others are outside centre Canan Moodie, scrum-half Grant Williams, flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit and lock Ruan Nortje.
